Tried something different with the latest version... started getting into Blue Mages. Kind of fun, having to risk getting yourself in harm's way to become more powerful.

This character got a really nice boost by finding Ringil in the Cloning Pits. Then it was just a matter of getting all the various attacks, and working my way to the Serpent.

My first battle with the Serpent ended in failure--I figured 9 mana potions would be enough, plus 30 or so heals, etc. But there were just too many guardian Uniques still around which compounded the difficulty of the battle. After barely escaping that level (and I had the Serpent down to two stars!),
I went to all the other main dungeons and wiped out the guardians there. Also took out a few other bothersome uniques, to the point where the Serpent only had Morgoth, the Unicorn of Order, and the Destroyer as reliable buddies to call upon on his time of need.

Actually I was wrong about this. He ended up summoning "A Plain Gold Ring," which I recall as being exceedingly nasty. And I never took out Bahamut, who fortunately did not get summoned this time. Nami the Mate made a valiant attempt at taking my life, but he died due to some fallout from a casually tossed mana storm. :)

Overall a fun experience. Blue mages are only as powerful as their hit points and sources of mana. Whenever I came across a few mana potions, I could take out a powerful unique. Without them, I had to run from everything. Still, a nice departure from my low hit point sorcerers of old.

The way you said that you have to throw yourself into danger to become more powerful reminded me of the webcomic 8-Bit Theater. "I don't recall saying anything about freezing yourself in a block of ice. Probably because it's so stupid."
