Early going went like this. Holding Song was heavily used ... seems to slow all non-unique monsters. I then worked my sling until receiving Wrecking Note at CL3. At this point I noticed that I was !Beginner at sling skill, so obviously ranged weapons are not for me! But Wrecking Note is quite good ... It is sound based so it has a nice stun effect on monsters. Worked Wrecking Note as my offence thru the Rogue Quest, Warg Quest and Meng Ho Quest. Nothing of note but guantlets of slaying as my reward.

Just finished Nami (sorry, but the Excellent drop was just to tempting) and she furnished Allegro with a +2 Pattern Weapon ... Sweet! I got Robin Hood as well, in total munchkin fashion as the attached screen shot shows. Well, no sense letting him rob me blind ;-) He dropped Grimtooth, but I'll probably sell that.

Soul Shriek seems like it might become useful, but currently it is too expensive. Heroic/Blessing songs are really being used at them moment as my fighting is not very good. So I'll continue with Wrecking Note for the time being.

Any advice would be welcome :-)

Think about it this way, its nice to be heroism'ed, but isn't it even better when your opponents are badly damaged (assuming you're fighting hill orcs, etc.) plus confused or asleep? Plus, heroism isn't that expensive, so you can cast Soul Shriek, let it run for 2 or 3 turns, then switch to heroism.

Another plus of using Soul Shriek a lot is that as you get better at it, your failure rate comes down a little, and, even more importantly, the mana cost starts going down as well (about 10% at Beg), letting you use it longer. Practice, practice, practice.

Plus, you have to do something while waiting for Doomcall. Soul Shriek is a nice little spell that can help a lot, but when you get Doomcall, well, suddenly playing a Bard becomes a lot of fun. I normally hate orc and troll pits (they are the bane of archers' existances, and the treasure and exp never seems to be worth the effort), but when your Bard can clear them in literally 10 seconds, they become a lot more fun.

That's what I get for the early post ... It must have been 'It' that did me in, but I was dead before I even realized that I was in trouble. Fighting Novice Rangers and suddenly I was blinded. Quaff Cure Crit and lo, there's a bunch of Hydras next to me. Death was immediate!

Well, the bard was fun. I'll try one again shortly, but I'll wait til after the Cloning Pits before posting next time ;-)
