Greatest
Mimic
Quest
Ever

Sometimes characters are lucky, and then sometimes characters are LUCKY.

The Mimic's Treasure Quest has always been by far the most generous for me among the low level quests, even providing the randart weapon my super-low level priest won with back in Hengband.

But this time, its absolutely outdone itself. First, there was the impressive randart crossbow, which is a very nice find for low-to-mid level archer. Then came the potion which ID'ed as Experience, which is a great find all by itself (of course he won't use it for a little while, but its still nice). But then, in the last room, came the piece de resistance, the item that made this the Mimic Quest to end all Mimic Quests: a (9d6) Glaive. Yes, its the Glaive of Pain. Heck, I thought he was lucky to have found that randart flail.

I sense truly diabolical revenge from the RNG.

(clevel:29, dlevel:10) Just finished Cloning Pits. Went in at clevel 25 (made it up to level 27 as Beastman, Polymorphed into a level 25 Balrog.) Decided I liked Balrog, was agog at the hp and damage output, and just then the BM had a suit of armor with rPoison AND rChaos for sale, which s/he was just able to afford. Went into the quest with 42 au to her name.

The Pits generally went fine. Toughest random monster was a Death Quasit, and the Gachapins only summoned hydras 3 or 4 times total. Being able to dish out 300+ damage/round in melee and 200+ damage/round with the crossbow meant she cut down the monsters pretty fast.

Treasure was moderate for a lucky character: Rohirrim, Yeduson, Hagen, and Avavir. Plus a (4d8) spear of slaying with a poison brand. Normally I'd be drooling over the spear, but her weaponry is already off-the-charts good.

615 hp at level 29. My last character with that many hp at that low a level made it to clevel 50 before dying to a single high priest she didn't take seriously. Hopefully I'll guard a little better against overconfidence this time.

(clevel:33, dlevel:44) The high exp necessary to level as a Balrog has gotten even more annoying than the constant search for food. For some reason, packs of novice mindcrafters will leave behind 7 skeletons, thrilling the archer side of the character, but zero corpses, annoying the Balrog side.

On level 40, got a "special" feeling, but it was a big level and nothing human would drop a friggin corpse. Finally, I narrowed it down to one corner of the map, and guessed it was a beaked axe that was guarded by Mime. Unfortunately, she was down to 200 hp, out of food and potions, weak from hunger, and a pack full of randarts, excellent items and stacks of 8+ skeletons. At full strength, Mime is a speedbump, but I decided to bite the bullet and recall out.

Turns out the axe was Turin, a superb weapon. Grrrrrr.

Turin? I assume you mean Hurin? The only with the +attacks and activation for Haste..

You're right. It was Hurin. +3 attacks, acid branded, and activating for haste+heroism makes for a nifty weapon, IMO.

Would have been comparable damage to the Glaive (much less damage/blow, of course, but 7 blows instead of 4. Probably superior damage vs monsters lacking rAcid, in fact.) and a bit more accurate, with a great activation to boot.

A sad loss indeed, but at least you have the Glaive! Which brings up a topic: What is your best missed artifact so far?

In Entroband I have missed Winblows and Eonwe with my last character and Thalkettoth with my current. While Eonwe would have to rank as my best miss, I would not have used it since I had Aglarang at the time.

In all play, I remember missing Cubragol at something like DL10 once (This is the equivalent of Brand, btw) and I remember missing Aule late in the game, back when Aule was "all" that. Both misses really, really, really hurt ;-)

OW! Missing Feanor is a pretty nasty miss.

A related question is: what is the most level-adjusted useful item that you've missed? My Craft High-Mage just missed Julian's armor at level (well, it wasn't exactly missed. I saw it, was 90% sure I knew what it was, but she just couldn't get to it). Missing it was a serious disappointment, but the impact on her game was probably less than when she missed Rillia back in the Yeek Caves.

Single most "powerful" item? Hmm. I have had multiple characters miss the Collar Harness, though unlike Dave I HATE aggravation (it aggravates me) so I tend not to use it. My Priest winner Smiter missed a whole bunch of stuff at the end, but I was happy with his kit and just wanted to find the Chemist, so I'm sure he missed a zillion good things, but I don't recall what they were.

I'll probably go with Julian as my answer for now, but something better may occur to me.

(clevel:38, dlevel:62) Failed the quest for Ungoliant, because after hacking through Raou, Saurman (he was friendly, but wanted, so he had to go), Baphomet and Nappa (Its hard to believe Baphomet is only 1 level higher than Nappa. They aren't even in the same league, power-wise.), she was out of healing and lacked rDark anyway. Took a shot at Ungoliant anyway, and was just happy to get away.

This character is progressing nicely, but is at high risk for being one-turn killed. Great offense, but mediocre armor and lots of resistance holes, plus she's slow. Healing is a problem as well. Balrogs always have food issues (and she's had a particularly bad run of luck in getting human corpses lately), and combined with Regeneration but no Slow Digestion, resting pretty much isn't an option.

If she's at maxed "Full" status, resting and healing will bring back perhaps 1,100-1,200 HP before she's down to "Weak", allowing for a modest amount of walking around and fighting. The only reason she was able to get as far into that level as she did was because she ate both Raou and Nappa (Nappa may not be human, but her Balrog stomach says he's close enough). Saruman was wanted, so she didn't eat him.

Could someone please spoil me on "missing" with preservation off in Entroband?
1.) Do I need to see the Artifact to miss it actually, or does it mean it has had to be generated only?
2.) Do Artifacts (not the randart ones) always generate the Special feeling? (I guess not)
3.) Are some Artifact only generated in certain vaults? I.e. Rilia only on the Yeek cave?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Hektor,

In answer to your questions:

1) It just has to be generated to be at risk of getting missed. Since monster treasure isn't generated until they die, this typically means only stuff that starts on the ground. However, if you kill something and immediately have to flee or get teleported away (like with the Ambers on occasion), whatever they drop counts too. The big problem is typically nasty mid-depth vaults with OOD monsters. If you come across Ringil in a vault at dlevel 40 with a clevel 35 character, and Habu is standing on it. In another game, you could skip it and look for Ringil later. With Preserve: Off, barring something exceptional, you won't be getting Ringil this game. Even worse, you might come across a GCV with a pair of nasty wyrms at the openings you can't get past. There could be a dozen artifacts in there.

2) Yes, AFAIK, true artifacts (truarts) always generate Special feelings. I've never had a false positive, and on the times when I've been chased off before getting to search the whole level, the list of known artifacts has always indicated that I missed something.

3) Nope. No set artifacts like in Deathwatch in ToME. Rillia's not much an artifact, but it was apparently generated extremely early, and for a level 7 or 8 character it would have been a great help. The exception to this is that a bunch monsters have a particularly good chance of carrying certain objects (like Eol and Anguriel in ToME). The most famous is Ishikawa Goemon has about a 70% chance of carrying Zantatesuken, but the other important ones are (and I'm sure I'm not aware of them all): Brand carries his crossbow about 30% of the time, Dworkin Barrimen has the Jewel about 30% of the time, Saruman sometimes has the Palantir, Corwin sometimes has Grayswandir, I think someone carries Werewindle (but I don't recall who), Shuten-Douji sometimes carries his tetsubo, the Serpent always has Grond and the Crown, and with Lazy characters, the 3 Lazy guardians always each have a Lazy artifact. I've also heard that Sauron sometimes has the One Ring, but I've only killed him once and he didn't have it, so I really don't know.

Anyone else that I've missed?

On 16.12.2005 20:20 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Brand drops Werewindle, Hagen drops his Spear (usually my favorite mid-early game weapon), Julian drops his armor, Sauron drops Darnya, Corwin drops his Guantlets, and I think Dio Brando drops Stone Mask (or is it just a reference in his character description?).

She's found a pair of blades of chaos of slaying, one (8d6) and the other (9d5). If either had been poison branded, or possibly vorpal, the Glaive probably would have been set aside, but no such luck.

Decided she was probably going to die soon, so she dove quickly... and isn't dead yet, somehow. Ran into the Greater Were-Quylthulg-thing-a-ma-bob on level 70, and it dropped Spec. Debating what to do.

If I thought she was all offense and no defense now, Spec would certainly amplify that. Lots of interesting weapons to choose from for the off-hand weapon, but I HATE aggravating. Still, the thought of adding Sting or Hagen or even one of those blades of chaos of slaying is mighty appealing...

My Archer went with Spec and never regretted it. Your melee damage output would become *insane* :)

BTW, anyway you could lose your regeneration cloak? A regenerating balrog who is carrying no corpses will probably starve sooner rather than later!

Congrats on the Gloves!

Thanks. I've had horrible luck finding corpses this entire game. Every time she gets back to town, she'll buy 50+ food, eat them until she's full, then when ready to go back into the dungeon, buy another 50+ food and again eat until full. I'll also buy out the stores for lembas, which is better than nothing in the dungeon.

(clevel:38, dlevel:72) Decided to wear the gloves and the damage output was astounding. The aggravation was bad, though.

A nightwalker got the killing shot with a nether ball, but the real damage came from being jumped by Vlad Dracula while being at ~500 hp and entirely unbuffed. Tried to fight rather than flee, and didn't quite pull it off. Finally, with ~100 hp left, she tried to flee, but the aggravation+bad detection+no healing was too much. I had previously managed the bad detection by staying in control of situations, using offense to overwhelm stuff and playing cautiously. When aggravating, however, everything was coming for her and she couldn't get away.
