My first ever 'band character! Hello, world!

I've been pleased with the bard so far, it's nice having this huge pile of utility spells along with some decent attack power. I've run into very few situations I couldn't handle with judicious use of my spells, whether it be sneaking past, slowing down, or just blowing everything up with Doomcall. I was nigh invincible for most of the Yeek Cave between my Defender spear and Flow of Life.

On the other hand, my melee damage sucks. I think in part this is due to my low stats, but spamming the auto-roller felt like cheating. >_>; Chalk it up to DMing powergamers, I guess. Not really too impressed with my HP either, but hey, 13 Con.

After nearly dying to my first encounter with Dark Elven Warlocks and their Mana Bolts, I've been hovering around DL 23 in hopes of finding some equipment good enough to give me an edge--it paid off in finding Harps of Rivendell, and I managed to clean out a vault, but Potions of Constitution have eluded me thus far and I'm still swinging for 26 damage.

On the other hand, I'm loving my armor. I'm losing some spell points to the weight, but being able to just wade into a group of monsters is really handy for using Doomcall/Dispelling Chant.

Will be pushing deeper again now, DL 24 is probably getting impatient.

I think all *Bands are fundamentally different from D&D because it's focused on tactical play and not RP. For example, there are no non-violent "Story XP." As thus, gimping your own stats is a self-imposed challenge, rather than a standard.

Additionally, in all *Bands, characters eventually get near max stats via potions, whereas in D&D, while you can gain stats by Tomes and extra points every 4th level and things like Belt of Giant Strength, your initial stats are basically NEVER made up for. Someone with a 18 starting STR will always have 4 more than someone with 14 STR, if they go through the same adventure and find the same items.

Well I realize it's a different type of game. It' s just that I saw it the same as playing a video game on easy mode, or hacking/gamesharking your own stats--I don't play any games like that, and to me, a D&D player who bases his character concept around which stats are 18s is playing the same way. Thus, my comment about it.

Now that I've gotten some experience with the game, I've realized that I did misjudge the standard a bit. So yes, at this point it is something more of a personal challenge. I'm okay with that, seeing as how I didn't expect to get past level 5 anyway. >_> Probably wouldn't have, but I had a good coach to get me started.

Extra stats every 4 levels? Maybe by your newfangled rules. =P

Hm... maybe, but the thing is, there is both "Munchkin" and "Easy Mode" built in, so I don't consider the in-game auto-roller cheating. And, if you want a challenge, there is always Nightmare Mode (or, for that matter, winning with a Sorceror... I don't think it's been done yet).

Just curious... who was your coach?

Lol.. you're one of the old-schooler AD&D types where fighters get just a full base attack?

The other thing is, I personally consider the first part of the game very "boring." I mean, sure, given enough patience, I could probably win with a character that started out at all 3 for base stats. But doing so would spend basically forever farming worms, then Granite Walls, in order to make enough money to buy enough Stat potions from the BM to get back up to competitive stats. IMO, the game is much more fun in the end-game, where you are strong enough to kill just about any monster, but weak enough that one or two stupid moves will kill you.

Incidentally, that's why I've never beaten Vanilla... getting a character up to Clvl 31 takes too long, and losing a character at mid-30's is just too much time lost. Heng, Entro, and many other variants ease this problem by having a good progression of quests to take the player through the early levels.

In Heng/Entro, it takes only about 3-5 hours to get to Clvl 30 with most classes...

So, it's kind of the same thing with D&D for me. I absolutely hate playing at Clvl 1, because your choice of what you can do is just so limited, and it's fairly routine "hack up rats" quests. (Though, in D&D, the upper-end is also not well balanced, so the optimal playing range is something like Level 8-12).

Don't make me mana storm your arse!! Just kidding ... I think there is also a Cyclops Sorceror winner on the ladder. But definitely an easy class to die with ...

Well, I finally managed to make some progress...and curiousity killed the bard.

Found Werewindle in the forest, and it broke the game wide open. Finally able to do some decent melee damage, I plowed through through the rest of the Forest, beat Shelob easily, and turned to the Castle.

Kept diving, got Shiva's Avatar and some other random artifacts along the way, then this level gives me a Baron of Hell and a couple Vampires. Baron was a tough fight, but I killed it and poked my head near the doorway of a room full of fun things I've never seen before like Ring Mimics and Tomes of Destruction.

And, er, yeah. Boom. Never even had a chance. I step into view of a few of the things, get hit for 274 damage, and my first character is so much ash and toxic sludge.

But I can't say that wasn't how I expected to go--instagibbed by something I hadn't seen, partnered with naivete. Fun ride, though. Time to reroll!

Ah, sorry to see that. I'm a big fan of bards and it looks like you made good progress with this one before getting a very rude surprise.

In the future, maybe try to check out new monsters when there are only 1 or 2, rather than a pit-full.
