3 Skills, turbo diving so far (though i'd really like free action soon. eek eek), no quests.

Yeah, UMD sucks as a half troll, but i considered doing throwing instead and then realized what all i was giving up to do that. Besides, its not like i don't have plenty of xp hanging around - i could probably suck it up and pump it while its penalizing me for not using it enough (i can't use it fast enough...), but i'm in no hurry.

I think i'm scared how bad my gear is for being on DL 18. More cash would be nice too, if only to invest in stores.

On 7.4.2006 20:34 jmiddendorf@hmc.edu wrote:
I'm suprised you're not running this as a giant. And, I'm guessing, no oath?

And you can totally dive faster than this ;)

With so few skills, you really run into practice issues. Magic devices already has issues with practicing in the early game.

I'd wield the armor of resist cold and resist acid ring.

Troll is better at melee, and has a bigger con/str inherent bonus. And xp is not the issue with only 3 stats (even though trolls UMD sucks xp like nobody's business).

As to the armor/ring - i came to that same conclusion shortly after posting.

Hmmm.... i'd like to dive faster, but i'm stuck on DL 23 with no See Invis, no Elec Res, and i just got free action (it moved fire res to a ring swap... sigh). Oh yeah, and my monster detection is nonexistent, which means i need to be able to have a chance of surviving 95% of what can pop around a corner at me.

Slowly collecting all the uniques i passed to get here. One of Half-Trolls biggest problems is money - and having ran through 5-21 really fast, i don't have much. Especially after back-to-back uniques cleaned me out of potions, staff/wand charges, and recharge scrolls - replacing all that hurt.

2 artifacts: Rohirrim (most recently - Bolg just dropped it) and 'Imperial' (meh, it gives free action, i'll take it). Much the improvement over acid, fire, free action, and see invisible all fighting for ring slots.

I've slowed down a lot because I needed better gear. Now with rohirrim i might increase the pace again.

On 8.4.2006 10:18 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
Well, I seem to be set to drop another 10-15 levels, but i don't know how important a priority poison resist is. With Drolems native to 72 and AMHD native to 62, i figure i can drop to around 50 and not be in too much danger. I'll start see Great Wyrms (Green) (native to 52), but i just (post saving the text file) found a ring of RPois, and a swap should be ok for them. (Alternately, if i find a better shield i can totally redo my gear. Or perhaps boots or a helm that are actually relevant would be nice).

On 9.4.2006 05:38 jmiddendorf@hmc.edu wrote:
Yeah, I don't think poison is a terribly important resist. It's not as much of a instakiller, until you get to the depths where poison can paralyze you, in which case having poison starts to matter a lot.

As for investing, I think investing in the weapons and armor shops are pretty useless. I tend to concentrate on the alchemist, temple, and to a lesser extent, the magic shop.

If you manage a shield of resistance and helm of serenity, himring will come in really handy.

On 9.4.2006 09:13 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
I'm a little xp drained right now (stupid town not having potions of restore xp), but i finally found a helm worth talking about (Hammerhand), and the first of the terrible items (blech, Gorlim). Carrying around Theoden for telepathy when not in combat - activating for drain life isn't an awful thing either.

Only really scary moment i had was a V pit - drained my save skill to about 40 and mindblasted the heck out of me. They weren't actually doing enough damage to make me worried, but i kept getting scared and didnt have enough rods to do much to that many vampires. (and a wand of cold balls at the time, which was mostly useless in that situation).

Amusing thing to note: my ego boots are the only ones i've seen all game. I got them by *enchant*ing a pair of normal boots bought in town. This makes me sad.

Just finished a Questing level which had a treasure vault at the center. That netted the staff of speed, some of the rods i'm storing, a ring of nether resist and a ring of invisibility +6. Useful loot, but nothing to write home about yet - ok, maybe the staff of speed.

Yes, that is 2 scrolls of questing and a scroll of aquirement in my home. I can't use them fast enough. (I've quested 3 times already too). Saving the scroll of acquirement for closer to item of speed depth.

Wishlist: Rod of Detection, something with speed (yeah, i'm not deep enough yet), useful boots, rod/staff of heal, poison resistance on not a ring.

On 9.4.2006 13:30 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
The big news: Boots of Speed +8 sitting on the floor. On a 'peaceful' level. Yay ood speed items. Its time to burn that acquirement scroll.

Itangast is dead - dropped a staff of heal and a rod of curing. I only hope i'll actually be able to use them when i max out UMD.

I'm starting to get curious how deep i can drop without chaos and nether resistance, since despite storing the relevant rings in my home there's no good way to wear them. Oh well, i'll cross that bridge when i get to it.

Found Gurthang in another questing level. woo hoo? Going back down to quest once again - i swear the drop rate on questing scrolls has been increased. (Last winner i had saw 1 the entire game, and it was after DL60; i've seen 7 or 8 this game).

I've missed a number of the mid-depth uniques at this point, and i'm starting to wonder if its worth caring. Specifically, the following are still alive: Mim, Castamir, Ar-Pharazon, Shelob, Kavlax, Lorgan, Quaker, Ariel. (Uniques native to depths at or shallower than my recall depth). The elemental lords strike me as vaguely annoying if morgoth summons them. The rest?

On 9.4.2006 15:02 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
Holy crap questing!

Questing level had a vault as its central feature. Something dropped Isildur outside the vault (marginal improvement over rohirrim). I then proceeded to find 5 more artifacts in the vault: Phial, Tulkas (!!!), Haradekket, Hvy Crossbow of Harad, Cammithrim. Tulkas was strictly better than my ring of constitution +4, so that was a no brainer. Not needing the str from my sling of velocity anymore, and needing light/dark resistance, i think i'm using the crossbow. Aggravates? meh. I'm so noisy i probably aggravate anyway. (Not a stealth character?) Cammithrim is tempting, but gloves of slaying are also nice. Admittedly before they got a little disenchanted, they were nicer. (stupid Gorlim, disenchanting my stuff). I'm not convinced i put the phial on, my lantern is awesome.

Also found: Amulet of the Magi [+11] (+6) - would let me wear the phial (my lantern is my only source of see invisible at the moment), but it replaces a +4 int item (so important for this characters UMDing). Also would let me swap my armor out for Himring if i ever got a shield of resist basic 4 (admittedly between hammerhands and my current shield i have all but lightning, but that seems like a poor hole to leave in my resistances).

Oh, i stopped carrying theoden so i could carry a dagger of Heroism as a swap for its activation. Stupid being afraid of things.

On 9.4.2006 17:14 jmiddendorf@hmc.edu wrote:
Wow. Nice questing results. Tulkas is native to 60, but you expect some OOD items when you quest.

I'm surprised you aren't using harad. Agg is annoying, but light and dark are pretty killer in S, to my mind. Helldark does insane damage, and light (especialy if perpetually cast by summoning angels) can be killer. I guess there's staves of teleport for that, though. Of courrse, aggravate is nothing to scoff at, either.

4 Light Green Mushrooms of Metamorphosis
Thinking about switching races in the end-game?

Oh, and boots of speed actually start dropping at dlevel 20 -- they're just really uncommon.

I was still thinking about gear when i posted that. I am using the crossbow. I actually majorly rearranged my gear.

Hmmm... Death Drakes are native to DL58. I don't have nether. I wonder if this is going to be a problem...

On 10.4.2006 08:11 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
Well, Holhenneth is a great improvement (more int, activates for detection!), and all Hammerhand was doing for me at that point was +3Dex.

Also picked up Thorin a while back, which is nice, but i'd rather have a shield of elemental resistance so i can wear Himring. (I'd take a cloak that did *something* too). Its not that i mind Imm Acid, its that i'd prefer not to carry a nether resist swap.

Most annoyingly, i lost my _CMW to hell hounds, and havent seen a new one in many levels. I've needed to run from Gyrus and Baphomet because of a lack of adequate healing since then. This is reallly annoying. (As is having to rely on ccw potions as healing... ug).

Oh, and could i get a blanket of elemental resistance? eek eek? My backpack is not appreciating being ravaged.

On 10.4.2006 11:28 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
All relevant stats maxed. Figured that deserved an update. (Oh yeah, and got some BoS +10 from a Death Quasit, useful)

Got swaps for almost everything i need (activate for bless, RPois, activate RPois, prot nether, activate heroism), though non swap ways of getting some of them would be preferred.

Missing: RDisenchant. I'm not fighting the tarrasque without it.

But i have teleport away, its diving/unique hunting time.

Wishlist: RoPs, Blanket of Elemental Protection

Make sure to store at least one banish evil (if you find one). That way, Morgoth's summons won't pose a problem.

Did you know that the phial (when activated) gives boldness for a short time? That might reduce your need for swaps (heroism). Of course, heroism is nice regardless, so maybe you still need it. Or you could just avoid fear-inducing monsters.

On 10.4.2006 15:48 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
I actually sold the phial recently when i found the Star of Elendil - and now i've got the Palantir too. Yay telepathy. Yay autodetect uniques on the level, i mean, risky clairvoyance.

And avoid fear-inducing monsters? Thats like all casting uniques, most &s, all Ds, all undead, ... Everything and their mom tries to induce fear - occasionally they even succeed.

Azriel is dead, and ow ow ow splintery broomstick ow. I spent half that combat healing - i think i ran him out of mana. Lungorthin was also a little painful, but is also dead. Down to 20 uniques (excluding sauron and Morgoth). There were some other uniques in there that went down easier. I fear Gabriel.

I can finally use my staff of healing. Yay.

Banish Evil, as in the staff? I'm not sure i'll be able to activate it... I might really want to consider scumming metamorphosis mushrooms for a better race...

The store sold me a wand of doombolt. Here, have another 100k gold, get more of those.

I'm desperately in need of disenchant resistance at this point. (Chaos Dragon Scale Mail sitting in town as my backup plan...). I finally found a shield of resist elements, but i also discovered i sort of need the str/con from thorin. I suppose i could go back to Hammerhand, which is probably enough. And all Holhenneth is really doing for me right now is +2 int (important, but not necessary, i hope).

At the moment i'm at DL78 (2 away from native depth for GWoC, which breathes disenchant), and i really need to scum up some better gear. Colluin would be awesome right now. Unspeakably awesome. (letting me free up my armor without manipulating Thorin). I'd settle for a cloak of Aman with Disenchant resistance. Fortunately, there are a lot of uniques i haven't seen native to approximately this depth that i want dead before i fight Morgoth, so its not a bad place to scum. Worst case scenario i carry the CDSM as a swap and go Tarrasque hunting to eliminate it, and otherwise teleport away any GWoC that happen by. Is there anything else that breathes disenchant i should be worried about?

On 10.4.2006 15:59 naj@uchicago.edu wrote:
Oh, i also object to Shadow Breeders. A lot. Ew. Breeds explosively, has lots of hp (takes more than a round to kill), breathes darkness, and is native to DL74.

Part of my objection stems from a gameplay perspective. Explosive breeders lend themselves to play i don't find very fun, and i liked being able to 'escape' explosive breeders by getting deep enough. Earlier ones were bearable because they died easily. And even then bearable is the right word.

The really stupid part is that explosive breeders don't actually make the game any harder. They just lead to level aborts.

Don't like Shadow Breeders? You'll *hate* Unmakers. Breed Explosively, tunnels. Hits to disenchant and reduce all stats. Is genocide bait, if you're a necro.

Yeah, they're obnoxious, but by the time you generally fight them, you can kill them faster than they breed. Remember, you're fast, so they'll breed more slowly, I think. I've generally been able to clear them, if need be.

And besides, there are lots of things that can cause a level abort. This is just one of the more obnoxious ones.

Yes, I meant staff of banish evill. Staff of banish evil + teleport away + doomblasts/annihilation = dead morgy, so long as you have healing and can take any single blast of Morgy and have +30 or better temp speed.

I'd vote for giant, or anything with good hit dice and no int penalty. That'll bring down your fail rates and leave you with good hp. Giant, high-elf, dunadun, or half-orc.

Race Device Int HD
HE 9 +3 10
D 8 +1 10
HO 3 -1 11
Gi 4 0 13
Gn 10 +2 8
Of course, you could always go all out as a gnome. Low hp, but *amazing* devices. There's an additional bonus for having devices be a cheap skill for your race. This will help with fail rates, but not with damage.

I'm amused. You might actually have a better character with my version of S -- it made magic devices more expensive, thus you'd have a higher power and thus better hp. Of course, your hp is already really good.

In case the maintainer is reading this:

Ungoliant is a she. I do not beat _him_ back when i wrest control of the palantir away. (Admittedly, i don't know how easy this one is to fix)

Ok, i have all the resists i care about covered or potentially covered - rilia will get disenchant for me (and i can blast with wands). I'm holding onto the CDSM for the Tarrasque, who i think i want to melee instead of blast. Anyone know if the Tarrasque can breathe poison in Sang?

Major upgrades from last time include Narya (which let me swap out my armor by covering fire) and Rilia.

I'm considering a different set of equipment for Morgoth that involves Anarion for the sustains. We'll see.

Uniques remaining: Quaker, Gabriel, Ancalagon, The Mouth, Murazor, Vecna, The Tarrasque, Cantoras, Qlzqqlzuup, and Gothmog. (+Sauron and Morgoth). I definitely want most of those dead before Morgoth, though i'm willing to ignore Quaker, Qlzqqlzuup, and perhaps Gabriel if i haven't seen them by the time i'm ready for Sauron. Though Qlzqqlzuup would let me scum uniques i haven't seen, which would be useful.

Last level had Ungoliant, Tselakus, and the Emperor Q (killed by LoS abuse, its the only chance this character had). Ungoliant's poison broke my resistance (ow?) and paralyzed me (double ow?) - but i managed to move with 1/3 of my hp left. It was still very scary.

Holy crap. GCV on DL88 that contained the Tarrasque, Cantoras, and Qlzqqlzuup. Then Cantoras summons Vecna. It was a great level for killing uniques - all of them went down eventually.

Typical start - clear the area around me and activate palantir. I best Cantoras and get to see the beautiful level. Head towards the main vault. (There's a smaller vault off to the side that i never get to as well).

Ran into the Tarrasque first because he wasn't in the central area of the GCV - was doing ok until i got the level feeling while fighting him, and it scared me. Not wanting to fight him at close range with wands I TPed him away. Walked off, felt bolder, started into the GCV.

And the center comes into view. There's Cantoras and, joy, a Black Reaver. Sadly, i aggravate (because of the crossbow of Harad), so it had already tunneled out of the gem prison. I genocided L to get rid of it (Though a storm of unmaking had finished breaking them out of the center already). And then i brace for Cantoras. Have him mostly alone (ignoring an Archangel that isn't doing anything except blinking around). Then he goes turbo-summoning. Lots of undead. a TP away a blackreaver, ignore the Ws, and keep wailing on him. He summons Vecna. Then he summons a bunch of Drujs, which undoubtably means i'm getting TPed away, and I am. Cantoras at 2 stars at that point (grrr).

Clear the new area i'm in, and oh look, tarrasque. Not afraid anymore, so i clean his clock (esp since i'm still hasted from earlier), and then head back towards the GCV. End up having to deal with a bunch of Ps and am on the wrong side of the GCV so i have to tunnel. (By this point Cantoras is basically healed to full).

In my tunnel to get to the GCV i run into Vecna, and i've slivered him when Cantoras decides to get in on the fun. (Round 2, fight) After his summon hither has fully pissed me off i TP him away and finish Vecna. But he's wounded, so its time to hunt down Cantoras.

Find him back where i dealt with the P cluster. He really likes that summon hither. Fortunately, that means he's not doing evil things like Rays of Death (ow ow ow), and i clobber him. He drops Fingolfin. Much rejoicing.

Now, one corner of the GCV is filled with drujs at this point. (I've genocided Ls again to get rid of all the others he summoned). I peak around and there's an unIDed ring there. Rest to genocided s, check. Its Nenya. Worth the resting.

Somewhere in here i detectioned using Holhenneth and noticed the Q in the middle of the GCV. Now, the nice thing about the black reaver is he left a nice messy path out which i could use as cover. So i finish clearing the outside of the GCV, work my way in and LoS screw Qlzqqlzuup to death. (This takes a while since i've lost some rods to lightning up to this point, and only have 6 to blast with). In the process i discover the shadowcloak next to him resists acid. Oh look, Luthien.

Previous trip had netted Murazor and Gabriel (Murazor was actually more painful because those Rays of Death are killer. And he kept TPing me away from him which was really obnoxious when he was the first thing i ran into on the level). This leaves Quaker (ok whatever), Ancalagon, and Gothmog to kill. Gothmog should be easy to run into, i wonder if Ancalagon is worth scumming for.

On 11.4.2006 15:12 jmiddendorf@hmc.edu wrote:
Well, I think I fixed both of those errors. Nice loot! Now, Quaker isn't to worry about (just teleport away him), and Angalagon and Gothmog can be killed or banished. Honestly, at this point, I'd forego wrestling and simply use wand combat, and change race (just about anything is better than HT for this).

I'd kill Sauron, then swap in Himring (for nether) or Luthein (same reason). Did you ever find banish evil? That makes it pretty trivial to kill Morgy without genocide, but I guess tp other will have to do? You could try buying out the magic shop a couple of times to see what show up. Luthein makes a *great* shopkeeper.

You have boring RoP.

Oh, and I'd probably swap in Luthein and Rilia to cover my holes, leaving the option open for using Celeborn's activation. Make sure to have a r_nexus whole when eating mushrooms of metamorphasis.

Of course, if you're deadset on meleeing Morgy (I think this is a bad idea in general), then Anarion is a must, I think.

This is me just after killing Morgoth and looting his stuff. He dropped 5 artifacts - I've got 4 in my inventory. Wearing Feanor, which replaced BoS+10 without any thought. In order to carry this i had to drop some items: ?recharge (not used), ?Phase Door (used a lot), -annihilation (which were empty), and _Banish Evil which saw a little use.

Ok, back to where we were last time -

Gothmog showed up on DL 92 a screen away from where i came down the stairs. He tunneled right to me. *splat*

I abused the palantir to quickly locate down stairs and dive straight to Sauron. Came down next to one of those multi-room complexes with all the same letter - filled with black dragons. cleared it out - still no sign of Sauron. So what the heck, i looked in the palantir. **Bested Sauron**. Detected with Holhenneth - no Sauron on this half of the map - went centerwards. We met in the center - he gave my healing a little workout (a few !healing and a lot of _CMW use), but he went down to doombolt no problem (basically same gear as morgoth except less ? in inventory and no phase door or !*healing* or !life). Had to go chase him a little when he TPed with 2 stars. He finally summoned at the end, but it was only demons.

Went back to town, stocked up, down for Morgoth.

Started up in a corner with a couple of Ds and Morgoth not too far away. Genocided E, G, Z, and L, and D because i wasnt going to have time to deal with them with the big P coming right at me. Used Banish Evil a few times but it sent Morgoth away and i wasn't so interested in that, though it did clear Ancalagon (still alive). Quaker also summoned and TPed away (still alive). I ended up genociding L and G again, and & a couple times to allow me some freedom to move. Phase doored whenever he got next to me. Did most of the fighting in a about 8x15 ish room with pillars, which gave me decent enough visibility. Burned out my annihilation wands, and then switched over to doombolts (i had 150 charges when i started). Annihilation had a non-0 fail anyway, so Doombolt was probably better. Only had to quaff ~3 !heal and didnt even burn out my _CMW once. (Sauron made me heal more).

!Xok has not put on the iron crown... yet...

Oh yeah, i did change race - first mushroom gave me Half-Orc, i was happy with that. I did play down to DL98 as a Half Troll though. Half-Orc made my UMDing a lot less annoying.

But, Morgoth returns after you banish evil him, giving you time to recharge, heal, etc. Plus, it's the easiest/fastest way to clear the summons, unless you have excess genocide, in my opinion.

Oh, and nice score ;)

I'm amused how you covered rbase...

And no confusion resist? I guess you have a rather large pile of healing to use -- did you buy them all?

Of course, you'd've had a better score if you found a grape jelly and removed all those levels in wrestling (well, removed all your skills, and then selectively restored spell resistance and magic device).

Also, next time, try to not have so much excess xp :)

Good jorb!

Wow. I knew magic devices were really good, but, uh... wow.

I haven't gotten much of a comment from Leon in a while -- he had some RL getting in the way of things for a while.

I've made some changes to the source to try to balance out some things, but I'm not sure what to do about magic devices. They're bloddy useful, and they're not much better than, say someone with a good crossbow. Annihilation is like 219 or so, doomblasts like 176 dmg per round.

Actually, there are bunch of characters who killed Morgoth using only magic devices -- Hazelnut, Lordon, Freddika, Zephyrus. This character just managed to make an art of not dying up until that point.

If you want an updated version, I have a personal version available at
www
cs
.hmc.edu/~jmiddend/sangband/sangband-src-099b20e.zip

(or replace src with win to get a win compiled version, sorry about format, oook doesn't like links, apparently)

If nothing else, magic devices are a more expensive skill to raise.

Of course, I'd like it if Leon made a new release as well ;-)
