First attempt at a diving FA character. Is there anyway to check turncount other than latest unique/artifact in the notes?

View hall of fame in the ~ screens should do it.

And if you were _really_ diving, would you bother with Amon Rudh? :)

Another way is file, show scores while you're playing.

Thanks. I'll try that.

My plan is to pick up at least unlight - I may forgo the third speciality though. Sadly the game is no longer going quite so fast - I've managed to double my turncount whilst only dropping a couple of DLs. I am really struggling for kit so have nipped into the wilderness in the hope of a quick few vaults but no luck yet. Still I was very pleased with how quickly I got into AR so I'm not giving up yet.

Maybe shouldn't have wasted my time in the wilderness, though I did pick up the lamp which will serve me until I get unlight and a [3,+15] Helm of Light which has improved my AC a lot! Othrod dropped a dagger of melting which is my new best friend (no idea what the randart war hammer can do, but three blows with my branded weapon seems a lot more effective in practice). These minor boosts are enough to convince me it is time to start dropping down AR again - currently CL21/DL22.

Btw the 20-30k wasted turns between W Berleriand 16 and getting to AR16 were due to the inaccessability of the AR entrance in AR15. On recalling and finding yet another staircase embedded in rock I tested out my one unID'd wand to find it was Stone to Mud - otherwise I dread to think how many turns I could have wasted... Can the AR entrance please be guaranteed to be on a path?

Really must update this dump...

Had a game-changing moment in the 20-30 mins I've played since yesterday. As suggested before I decided to dive again and dropped from DL22 to DL27. I made the mistake of illuminating a room containing two Gaveronian Huntsladies (my detect evil doesn't show them of course!) - they opened fire and if I'd been hit by one more arrow I would be dead. I read a ?oTel next turn and soon took an upstaircase - I know that isn't in the spirit of diving but it was the only way out without crossing the huntsladies which would probably have been fatal. As it happens I started the next level a few squares from Brodda. I dropped him and he dropped Narsil! I seem to find that sword earlier every game!

I now have a quandry. My offence is suddenly quite useful, but my armour is terrible - the only ego stuff I have is a helm of light and sandals of slow descent! If I had some more rAcid I'd be tempted to go for Mim - though is it worth risking Narsil against his disenchants? I'll see what AR28-30 bring but then I'm tempted to start heading north to Angband and seek my fortune there.

On 9.5.2007 09:48 Psi wrote:
Should have said: CL23/DL27 ~150-160k turns

On 9.5.2007 22:57 Psi wrote:
I had skipped Mim whilst I waited for more appropriate equipment and consumables to show up. However I now have another source of rAcid and finally another !oSpeed has shown up so I am tempted to give him a bash - though I may use the HA spear rather than Narsil!

CL26/DL40 turncount: ~210k (and it is getting seriously scary at that depth without rBlind or rConf!)

On 10.5.2007 01:24 Nick wrote:
This is really impressive. I think I'll have to try a diving Rogue soon.

On 10.5.2007 11:42 Psi wrote:
Thanks!

Couldn't resist having a crack at Mim straight after the dump and sure enough he wasn't much of a problem with Mana Burn and with me buffed to the hilt (though sadly I couldn't get a ?PfE which might have saved a few disenchants). As with Quiet Jim, I took unlight as my next speciality.

I then headed north towards Angband, but it all got really messy in the Fens - though I just survived! Then in the desert I was struggling to hit the monsters never mind kill them - CL26/DL46! Therefore I've had to take the decision to raid Nargothrond instead (too many hounds in T-I-G!). Currently diving there - turncount 235k.

On 10.5.2007 19:07 Psi wrote:
Finally got rBase! - though it took me until DL53. Had to TL from that level after it got very nasty and I had single figure HP at one point... now CL29/DL54 tc 280+K

On 11.5.2007 09:33 Psi wrote:
At an odd point of the game. I'm not powerful enough to dive deeper, so I'm having to hang around the Sirion Vale looking for kit and stat potions before I can get going again. I'd prefer to hang out in the desert, but I'm worried about the rubbles affect on my turncount!

I now have a recall point at Nar54 so I can quickly go for Glaurung once I get a source of rPois.

On 11.5.2007 10:25 Psi wrote:
Oops. Judging on the previous couple of rounds of combat, I was sure I could survive another one. Stupid thing was I was never going to kill him in that round either.

On 11.5.2007 10:27 Psi wrote:
Ah now I see the last messages, he sneaked in a nether lance - no wonder. I really wasn't thinking taking on a dreadmaster at this stage. Wish a source of TA had shown up by then...

On 11.5.2007 11:28 Nick wrote:
Tough luck - impressive effort, though. I've been trying a few diving rogues, with no luck so far.

On 11.5.2007 11:35 Psi wrote:
In retrospect it was stupid though. I'd sensed a vault and had already waded through the rubble and despatched two phantoms at great cost and did not want the effort to be wasted. Should have realised it is better to be alive than dead. Oh well there is always next time!
