Posting waaay to early, but this guy has been quite lucky, so I wanted to share.

Found both Battle Spells and Escapes and Tricker books already at clvl 15. Just waiting for the inevitable RNG smackdown.

Also just spotted Magical Defenses, but it was being guarded by Waldern and a Plasma Vortex. Dang :(.

Pffdead. Of course I wasn't careful enough and a high-elven sorcerer blinked into LoS and killed me before I had a chance to react. It's really hard to get used to the incredible speed disadvantage.

Might try a Mage again -- the spellbooks seem quite fun.

Thralls are kind of addictive...

Very addictive indeed. There's just something about leveling 1-15 with a single kill like my new incarnation of Brutus a H-E warrior did. He's only killed a single Fire Vortex so far.

Had a little luck with early kills, so Clvl 19 at this point. Spent a little too many resources at this point though... had to *Destruct* a horde of hounds after a Nexus vortex teleported me.

Some good early kills I've discovered: Vortices (shimmering, cold/elec/fire, the others have too much HP), memory moss (incredible XP for these) and not least dragonflies (F). The latter are pretty rare, but incredbile XP.

Which good sources of starting XP am I missing?

Just picked up a Minor Powers book. Telekinesis should make it a lot less risky to stair-scum further.

I only played a few thralls, but the one that actually made it back to civilization alive collected wands and took out demons. I don't recall exactly which demons, but I want to say that Vrocks can safely be pelted from a distance, and once those stop being beneficial it might be Mariliths, I forget...whichever ones don't hurl crap at you. That's mid-to-end-thrall game though... and you need some distance and a straight path to hit them enough times for them to die. They give really good exp for the danger level. As far as first few kills, I would add the Glutton Ghost and the most mundane hounds... clear, lightning... I usually would drink the potions un id'd for a few easy character levels. Psi's the real thrall guru, I'm probably batting 2 for 500 on thrall survivors.

Oh yeah, and half-trolls, or any boring looking troll.

Yeah, I noticed about Vrocks... they're relatively safe and yield huge XP for their danger level (zero at a distance). Their confusion attack can be annoying though -- though I suppose if you're on the stairs you can always leave the level.

Wands, yes. I've noticed that some of the Ball of X wands are quite powerful for taking out groups of low-level critters (Orcs, Ogres, etc.).

I'm starting to think about taking on a Death Mold... maybe if one spawns close to you and there isn't anything else dangerous lurking around...? I don't know how their regeneration rate is, but if you can beat that you've got an extremely safe kill. They're quite high-level and should yield a lot of XP.

Oooh, while I'm here...

What about specialties? I'm thinking Heighten Magic is quite useful at the start since you're likely to require many casts to kill anything anyway, but Channeling also seems appealing.

Dunno about mages. I always take armsman and fury and extra attacking and attacking and attacking and so on and so forth. :)

I tend to take clarity followed by heighten magic for a mage. I guess it depends on if you are planning on going back for Mim or just going straight down.

In terms of good XP thrall kills, my favourite first kill is a memory moss (you can't help but one shot them and they give massive XP) followed by Gnawing bugs (let them breed a bit before you kill one), then bats, dragonflies and vortices. After that I enjoy a Vrock and Mumak diet until I start descending Angband.

I wouldn't touch a death mold myself.

Thanks for the tips.

Leveling going a bit slowly, but did find Glamdring which is a great find as it has permanent light. Don't have to worry about running out of light now.

Also found the third Mage book. Alas, Stair Creation doesn't work outside of dungeons -- so still no perfect means of escape away from the stairs (well, I have a few scrolls of *Destruction* left).

Telekinesis also seems to work a bit... oddly. I can enter a level, immediately see an item (not using Detection or anything like that) and not be able to pick it up because of a sand dune. I realize that you have to have LoS to the object, but how did I see it if I didn't have LoS?

That is the subtle difference between FoV (field of view) and LoS I'm afraid. Both are calculated differently. Whether they should be is a topic for debate.

[Clvl 25] Still hanging around the first levels, but had to escape towards and he's now on the edge stairs (which limits options and visibility greatly). Still pondering whether to try to move towards the center.
