Paladins, Mages, Tourists and Imitators are classes I have yet to win in Hengband. The Paladin is frustrating for me to start, as they have very poor detection. I guess detect evil isn't bad, but they still start slowly. I'm trying to negate their detection woes by choosing to play a Mindflayer, but this makes for an even slower start. 1 attack until CL10 and then 2 attacks until CL20 is typical, which makes life hard for a melee class! But this guy had some luck. Stat boosts went (from memory) Dex, Wis, Str (2nd attack early!), Int (Boo!), Dex (by choice), Str (3rd attack very early), Int (Boo!), Dex, Str, Dex (by choice ... 4th attack). This is very unusual. More unusual is that this is the first character I fired up. Usually it takes a dozen or so before the first stat boost leaves the Int/Chr gravity well.

Also helpful was a vampiric weapon from Smeagol, and now recently a pattern weapon from Nar. I could barely kill Nar. He attacked me for 80hp/round on the two rounds I let him attack, which is crushingly hard. I thought my AC was good? Well, it seems his curse always failed, though, so I blasted him down low with malediction and then finished him off with melee. Still, a close fight!

On returning to town I saw a ring of damage +9 for sale. Selling all left me 1.2k short, so I recalled and dug out the missing gold. Now I think I can fight pretty well.

This is my second go at this build. In an earlier attempt about a year ago I got squished by a triple psycho spear from Cantoras, which was annoying. I recall being powerful in the end game, especially with Wraithform, though that is what did me in at last. We'll see how this one goes. Its quite a long way off to be thinking of such things ...

And Fafner nearly killed me, but I resisted his curse (I was down to 100hp) and polished him off next move. So early paladins are weak, I think. My spell alternatives are 30hp damage for 20sp, which hardly seems worth the bother. Well, I'll keep healing at the ready and try to scum storm wyrms ... My robe and any artifacts are from drops. The rest is from scumming. It was a good shopping spee!

I won't use Zarcuthra ... not even situationally. I'm too squishable at the moment and cannot resist major dragons wandering over from time to time while I am busy. Plus, I scored Hurin which effectively doubles my damage output to 550 when the acid brand works. Very nice!

I think now I will have more success against those pesky storm and ice wyrms, no?

Anyway, I finally finally finally covered disenchantment resistance. It took a rand-art shooter to do it. Death paladin spells don't seem to be even remotely usable until CL50. Esoteria? I gain that at CL38 ... with a 60% fail rate. Given the frequent moronifications for failing to cast spells, I think I will pass! So, I play like a warrior, but hey, I just took out Fanghorn with malediction!

Maybe I'll pop over to Angband now for a few quests. Seems like leaving my Angband level at 12 until the end game is a bit tedious.

I don't know how I am still alive. I risked a kill of Brand without shards resistance, and the TY curse gave not one, but two cyberdemons! Ouch! Did you know that a single rocket does 800hp/damage? So, I'm walking around DL72, running away from the likes of Jisisl, Biketal, Iketa, Benedict, Locke, etc etc. Every level seems to have 5 or so uniques that I'd rather not tangle with (And maybe 5 more that I would!). I lack Poison, Dark and Nether resistances, so I think I'll be hanging out in Vampire form whenever possible. My damage output is quite respectable this way.
