The Challenge: Vanilla Town. And since we are being plain, you must play a human. I'll stop there and let you pick any personality/class you like.

Here's my take:

Scummed up a decent stat boost start by scumming some scummy white worm masses. I accidentally killed them all, but here's a scummy white mouse coming over to play! :)

Boy, this is tough. King Duosi was easily handled with Tobi-Izuna. Smeagol, likewise, though I had to toggle Detect Ferocity to see him! Humans suck! And Nar rolled thru my hp down to 30 or so 3 time before I got him finally. He's always tough, though, which is why you want to build up more before the DL12 quest.

Smeagol and Nar both gifted me elvenkind armor. I need a good weapon, though ...

Classic early game woes. 2 hours to score See Invisible and my second spellbook. No sign of Free Action yet, so I'll recall and kill. Recall and kill. Repeat. Almost 2k dead so far!

I can Judge now, so that will take a load of my identify stash. Wind Blast is also very useful. But I did miss 5 out of my last six random stat rolls, getting 2 Int and 3 Chr :P

Free action at last. Almost 3 hours, and nearly 3k kills. I'm on the level from hell. I killed almost 400 monsters (2 packs each of Light, Shards, Darkness hounds ... 2 mobs of orcs. Mob of annoying magic mushrooms. New mobs spawn as fast as I kill old mobs). Then the fleas showed up ... I was attempting to go down stairs, but now I need to recall instead. I never got near any stairs ... I'm also playing small levels, so having 700 monsters on a single level is a bit crowded!

I guess I'll wait to CL30 before the DL24 quest, as I'm still getting spanked around DL20! Oy!

Boy as hard as Rich the Thief was, you figure I'd get something useful! Lightning resistance and a force weapon (Samurai can't use those). I invest 3 !speed in the bugger too! Oh well, at least he's better than Alberich or Gachapin. I'd have preferred Grendel or the Dungeon Cleaner, though.

Some equipment upgrades courtesy of 900 quartz veins and 2 days of shop scumming. Nobody said that was illegal ...

Heheh... small levels are fun. I even went ahead and added the SMALLEST flag to Angband, which makes every level exactly one screen size! (This is probably a recipe for unavoidable death-by-recall at the lower depths... but I'm on a tiny laptop and I got sick of having to move the screen all the time.)

Good luck!

Slice. Slice. Baby.
Slice. Slice. Baby.
OK, this is really slow going getting up to power speed. I finally found my first stat potion (Dex) and it bumped me up to 4 attacks. 5 attacks is completely unreachable at the moment, so at CL30 I picked Con which is an amazing 18/130 intrinsic!

Phantom Beasts: 200hp/round.
Black Knights: 200hp/round.
Jade Monks: 150hp/round.
Troll Kings: 250hp/round.
Any fast monster kills me in 2 turns. How can I survive?

What? No way, djabanete! Black Knights curse and summon, Jade Monks heal and stun, Phantom Beasts walk through walls, and you think Troll Kings are the most dangerous of the group?

Troll Kings are easiest to avoid. They are fast, but I can just teleport away! Black Knights can kill you before you realize you are facing one. 2 curses will kill many characters at this phase of the game. I can probably handle 3. I had Phantom Beasts sneak up on me a couple of times (detect ferocity misses them), and I lacked the power to kill one in a single move. They only have 2 attacks, but they are 44d2 attacks. The double move is the problem. Jade Monks are probably the weakest on the list. I just got unlucky with one, I think. Anyway, my melee is stronger now, so all but the Troll Kings are less of an issue.

Wormy drops Celegorm! Yay! This lifts my AC out of the 40's and squarely into the 60's. Oh, that still sucks :(

Also, I finally managed Grendel. Getting him alone to do Wind Blast is very difficult. His mob, mobs of snotlings and novice rangers caused problems. Finally got him, but with a novice range on his tail reducing the range of Wind Blast. He hits for 60% of my hp per turn as well :P

I also almost got killed my a mithril golem, who was hanging out with a pack of skavens. Killing a mithril golem requires about 700hp of healing for me ... Or Wind Blast. But those damn skavens! Teleport next to Biclops and pack of air hounds. No poison resistance (covering this will take melee down to 60/round!). Teleport next to mob of glaaki. Survive in weakened state, but barely.

Its a matter of time. The real difficulty with this build is playing at base speed 0. I'm too deep, and should probably still be hanging out around DL24 or so. But I have this silly belief in the existence of stat potions, and would like some :) If one gets a staff of speed, there is no way to recharge other the ?Recharging. Potions are too precious! Maybe someone will drop me a pair of Shiva's Boots?

Almost 7 hours. 6.5 kilokills. I got stiffed by Hagen in what was probably my only hope for getting off base 0 speed. Really, hanging out at DL31 for 30 hours of game play is not my idea of a good time. So, unless something happens quick, I will suicide and abort this challenge. And now I remember why I stopped playing vanilla. It is just no fun.

On 13.10.2009 19:08 Djabanete wrote:
@chris: I definitely know what you mean. There is a huge difficulty barrier at this depth, and getting cheated by Hagen is one of the most annoying things ever. I think you could be at depth 35-37 though, which would increase your chance of getting a lucky break before frustration sets in.

It seems to me that the monster list is designed to suit the power curve of a character with Sting and several lucrative quests completed (Mimic, Doom, and the Elven Cloak stand out in my mind) by this stage of the game, and it's an uphill battle when these things aren't available.

@Dave: Yes I find troll kings the worst! Jade monks don't heal (Ivory Monks do, and I'd be willing to rate them as scarier than Troll Kings), Black Knights don't summon (although you still need to be extremely careful around them), and Phantom Beasts, although they can give you a heart attack by sneaking up on you, have almost no HP. Troll Kings are super fast and have monstrous HP and do the most damage out of the monsters listed. They're also easy to avoid, but I definitely find them the hardest and most dangerous to kill out of these monsters.

On 13.10.2009 19:48 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Ahhh ... Thank God! Dead at last. Pheww! First time I was ever glad to die. Mobbed by a bunch of Flying Polyps on a 1x1 level with no where left to teleport. Full hp to 200 in first round, then to 26 in the next and I knew I was dead :) Yay!

Challenge is still open for any takers. If I had to go again, I'd do one of the following:

[1] Ninja. These are fun to play. In contrast to warrior types which are frustrating early on. In fact ninjas are always a treat!

[2] Mindcrafter. Rely on pulverise. You'll haste and double resist. You will be way more powerful than this guy was. Get those early wisdom boosts!

[3] Magic Eater. With no recharging other than scrolls, this class shines. Get a staff of speed and you'll be hasted the rest of the game.

Of course, humans really suck! Geez, a golem warrior would be a powerhouse compared to these guys.
