This is how I am going to play it ... Feel free to adapt the rules somewhat as long as you stay within the spirit of the challenge, which is to win the game with crappy cursed gear!

[1] Rings, Amulets and even Lites are free. So the Jewel is OK. Sacred Knights and Dwarves are OK. Shame on me, but I think this is a really hard challenge. If I win with the Jewel, you may call Shenanigans if you like! The "One Free Pass" approach seems interesting ... feel free to play that way, I think it will still be tough. I just think it will be really hard to stay alive long enough to make the "correct choice" with that approach. Now, watch me shop scum PDSM and eat my words :)

[2] Equipment must be cursed to begin with. I'm debating whether or not uncursing items will allow you to re-equip them ... probably not but I am open to thoughts on this one. You can enchant your cursed gear if you like, but any plusses that were negative may not be enchanted positive. This allows you to melee with those cursed weapons that start out with huge negatives to hit. (Hey, wait ... are death scythes cursed? There's your offensive fire power with the Mindcrafter!)

[3] You may id and sell anything you like. Good ammo (wish I thought of that earlier) is just fine, but your shooter must be average or cursed.

======================

So, where is one to get FA and SI? I decided to go with a Mindflayer monk for this reason alone, forgoing any innate resistances. I went with Life for the late game Ultimate Resistance spell, but I doubt I will make it that long.

Early game was standard, but I dug a bit more than usual to scum a ~Z ring. With Unusual Rooms, my typical early Angband quests were out, and I must therefor jump into the Tower ASAP.

I found a quartz vein pretty quickly, but I was fighting them without FA and without lightning resistance, which will be hard to come by. Fortunately, my high innate AC allowed me to kill the 400 or so to reach CL25 and gain FA. Now, I should be able to build a good supply of gold ... unless my Dex drops so low that I drop to 1 attack. Even then, I think I can do it.

I ran thru 11 million gold buying stat potions. 5 !NewLife gives an OK life I'm not thrilled about. 18/100 is by far the best intrinsic wisdom so far, and 18/130 con is nice. But I'll never be able to get my last attack this way, even with Gogo. Still no "Resistance, so I ran some more quartz veins, and finally found some granite walls as well. But then the BM immediately stocked "Resistance, which is what I was waiting for.

Let's see what the top of Angband has to offer.

(Aside: Read ?Mundanity on PDSM. Technically, that would be OK, but that violates the spirit of this challenge!)

I cleared a dozen or so GCV's and bubbles. Maybe 100 artifacts? But only one cursed one, and I don't think I want to use it!

The Quarterstaff of Falsehood (1d9) (-10,-18) {cursed, TeTy|P}

I guess I'll move on over to the Castle, though I will get hallucinated to hell and back. Generally, chaos resistance is mandatory at that point. I'll just bring 3 _Curing and see how I can do.

If I were to do this again, I don't think I would do a Mindflayer Life monk. Maybe a Spectre Nature monk? Or maybe a Draconian Craft monk?

I'm not sure this is possible ... basically, there are 7 or 8 fixed artifacts that are cursed that might be usable. But all the rand-arts are total junk, generally with antimagic, ancient foul curse, no teleport, random teleport, crushing negative p-values, and no compensating bonuses. So, its like trying to win with no resistances ... or fighting naked.

Too hard ... Well, I played 5 hours and found nothing I could wear, aside from Dasai (pseudo ids as terrible despite not being cursed, so I guess its ok). And since I had no hope of covering poison (well, I could wear a ring, but then my 180 hp damage per round would not go far), let alone confusion or chaos (I was basically perma-hallucinating), a drolem got me with a single breath.

Like a said, a spectre monk would do better (innate FA, SI, resist poison, immune nether, passwall for retreat), but there has to be a way to wear some sort of equipment. You simply can't win if the only source of resistance you get is an amulet, and if you have no stat boosts.

If you change the challenge to allow 3 non-cursed items at any given time, not counting rings, amulets or lites, it would still probably be too difficult.

Maybe Archer aiming to use Harad for offense and Twilight for speed. Can they use egoammo?
Or Ninja with quickwalk later and with ironspike as offense in the beginning until a cursed ninja randart shows up. Or with lots of wands, rods and staves.

Sorry I just can't help to generate ideas!
What about beastmater/cavalery with Razorback and Thanos they can even ride a great wyrm of power. (aggravate is a form of curse right?) :-)

On 19.7.2010 16:19 chris wrote:
Allowing aggravating items is interesting ... The hard part of the challenge is making it possible to live long enough to find stuff. To get Razorback, you must kill Great Cthulhu, and you will need quite a bit of power to do so. You will need resistance, to be sure! A single rocket does 800hp ... you probably won't be able to get shards resistance, and you probably won't have 800hp either.

I'm going to give the 3 free slots item some thought. There are 8 equipment slots other than rings, amulet lite (which remain free for anything). With cursed only, your basically saying you can use none of those slots until you manage to luck into one of a handful of items. That's hard. A warrior will cap out at 30 damage or so. Maybe 100 damage with a good ring of damage. You won't get far that way.

But 3 free slots, means you are only losing 5 equipment slots. So, if you find a good weapon, you can use it ... Until you find something better. How can you hope to stay alive long enough to kill Stormbringer and get the coveted cursed sword, when something like this is all you can hope for:
The Great Axe of Castration (4d4) (-21,-14) (-4 to speed) {cursed,
Sp;TeAgTy[M, PermaCurse}

Your better off with an average dagger, of course!

So, revised challenge:
[1] Average items OK ... heck, I'll even allow the ?Mundanity on PDSM trick. You'll never find PDSM anyway.

[2] Cursed items OK. Anything that pseudo-ids as "terrible" is OK. I'll broaden and say that anything that aggravates, prevents teleportation, has antimagic (only if you can cast spells) counts as cursed too. So, Harad and Razorback count. I think Muramasa as well.

[3] Rings, Amulets and Lites are free slots. Anything goes.

[4] You may remove curse on cursed items to take them off. You can put them back on later. You may enchant cursed items, but you can't enchant something that was negative to become positive. Stop at 0.

[5] You may wear any 3 items you like in the 8 equipment slots at any one time. So, you have 3 free slots. The 5 remaining slots can only be filled with cursed gear.

Seems way too easy? I still say will be very hard ... but at least you should be able to cover resistances and fight effectively to find stuff. I think losing a single equipment slot out of 8 makes the game hard, and here you are effectively losing 5. You'll get 1-3 of those back with the proper cursed gear, to be sure. But that won't happen until very late ...

My big misjudgment on this guy was:
[1] Frequency of cursed artifacts. I only ever found 2, so the frequency is around 2% or so. I found 30 named artifacts, and countless rand-arts.

[2] "Quality" of cursed artifacts. They seem to never get a positive ability. Admittedly, my sample size was small! But with the low frequency, I figured I could just troll until I found one that was usable. I was expecting AFC and random teleportation, to be sure, but would have liked a couple high resists as well. I'm not sure that happens very often.

On 19.7.2010 16:31 chris wrote:
Can a monk win with Shiva's armor, Shiva's boots and Brand? Actually, they will have a shot, but they generally have a hard time covering key resistances with all 8 slots. And here, they only pick up {AcElFiCoShNx} leaving {PoCfCaNtLiDkDiBlSo} as 9 gaping uncoverable holes. Sound in particular is a requirement. Maybe your race can pick up a couple like {DkDi} for the Nibelung or {PoNt} for the Spectre. {Ca} on a Half Titan or even {PoSh} on a skeleton might be tempting. But the usable cursed items don't seem to be usable by monks, with the exception of Thanos. I'd like to see someone wear Thanos ...

A warrior stands a better shot, I think. Dual wield the Falcon Sword of Destruction, and Calris or something. 3 slots go for Brand, Armor and Shiva's Boots. Maybe Feanor. Maybe Amber. At least you have some flexibility!

Actually, just being able to get Shiva's boots early in the game and use them is huge. Walking around with low speed and gaping resistance holes is suicide ... Plus, the boots have FA and Lv which are important, and will be hard to get elsewhere.
