Here's a guy that's sure to die :D

Lazy high mages are hard to start, and I finally settled on a Dunadan for the extra early hit points. I really wanted a Mindflayer as I would be telepathic already, but, alas, I could not survive a single undetectable zog in the early going. Its a shame I'm born with an 18/70 con, as that means a long slog thru !NewLife.

New lives and my con went 18/70->18/80->18/70->18/90. I decided to stick with this last since my life rating was 113% and my Int 18/130, though this is going to be tough to overcome. Rings of Con +6 help, but they can only be used so long. I have managed to stockpile some more !NewLife should I change my mind, but I think the Int will prove important in the end game, especially with the guaranteed -4 Int from the moron mutation.

Finally a Ring of Speed, so I have to abandon one of my rings of con. Its a good speed ring of +9 too, so I'm quite happy and am willing to swap out my wizardstaff for the time being.

Oh, I guess I don't need to rush into the Node of Chaos quest, since I already have my 4th book. I can just take my time and gain CL40 for the manastorm, but the extra 10% fail rates of the lazy personality will make it unreliable a bit longer than normal.

Mana Storm! Pretty quick for a lazy guy, but now I just need another 8 more levels to get the fail rate down :P

An early epic battle with a Golden Angel produced a shiny new can of toys!! Inside was Amber, Hithlomir, and Harad. I really really tried to get Jack's Cloak from Jack himself so that I could use Amber. Man, was that a tough risky kill (even with Darkness Resistance and +24 speed), but, alas, he stiffed as usual. I have better luck getting The One Ring from Sauron than getting Jack's Cloak from Jack ... Jerk! I'm about 1% lifetime odds, though I know the odds are better from looking at the source code. Weird ...

Anyway, Thranduil showed up with the one resistance I really wanted, and that is poison resistance, so I don't think Amber will get any use for a long time anyway, if at all.

I completed the pits, and lost another 3 points of Con on swapping boots. At this point, I decided to roll the dice with my 5 !NewLife as only having 550hp seems too low for a class with no healing, and no double resistance. I finally got a decent set of intrinsic stats, but it took another 4 !NewLife to get it (8 lives but only 1 above average con??). Life rating down to 94% (-17% overall, but what is 17% of 250? That's only 42hp). I gained 4 more Con (+150hp or so at CL50), 2 more Str and only lost 2 Int. Not bad, though if I wrecked my life at this point, I'm not sure I'd have the patience to recover. As it is, I need to go find another 20-30 stat potions ... sigh.

All that, and now I don't even want to wear Shiva's Boots. Max Con. Max Int. All resists. Only +15 base speed, however.

Chicken!!! I drew Loki for my DL76 quest. I could take him, except he has a 600hp mana storm, and I only have 693 hp. I recalled immediately before I could make a fool of myself, dying yet again. Oh, this guy will die soon enough, but I'd rather it was The Unicorn that squished me instead of Loki.

Down to the bottom of the lair, for patient leveling. I scored Fingolfin and Yata-no-Kagami, so Amber is possible after all! I lose +5 speed covering poison resistance from a cloak, and +6 speed covering nether from Crimson. Maybe if I could score Stone Mask, I could gain another +11 speed? That and re-rolling my hp (95% life, not 94%, sorry ...) would probably be beneficial, though I'd hate to lose another 2 points of Con. But +32 base speed is end game worthy, so if Dio Brando presents me with the opportunity, I will take it!

In the immortal words of John "Hannibal" Smith: I love it when a plan comes together! I pasted a Great Wyrm of Balance, leveled up to CL45 and an super sweet 8% fail mana storm, and picked up the uber-elusive Jewel of Judgment in the bargain. Now, really, all I need is for Dio to drop the Stone Mask and me to get a 120% life rating in the bargain ;D

Damn! I went in strong, hoping for The Unicorn of Order, but drew wimpy ol' Cerberus instead. Shucks! Now, I'll have to face the horny beast at her native depth, where she loves to spam the nearly invincible Great Wyrms of Power!

[CL47:Oberon] 10:20
Super careful play ... That Oberon can really dish out damage, and loves to double move. If he did *any* damage to me, I healed full, but with only 770 or so hp, he could easily laugh his way through that. Reflection made me a little more confident, but a double mana storm would put me at -400hp and there is no defense against that (other than luck). But, my Mana Storm caught up with the guy, and he did his usual cowardice pre-death swan song. I always force levels small for this battle, just because it is so freaking annoying otherwise.

He upgraded my RoS to +11, but otherwise, not much to show. Now, I'll hang out for The Unicorn!

OMG!!! The Unicorn of Order!!!

Oh, what an epic battle! Oh, the humanity! Nodens to the left, Combat to the right, and I'm stuck in the middle with the Unicorn! But, alas, infinite destruction, infinite mana, patience, and plentiful healing, along with super slow, super careful, well thought out moves made the battle fairly routine. A nasty early time trick dropped me down to CL46 early on, and I then realized my lack of !RestoreLife, so I had to fight with a 5% mana storm, and 9% logrus breath, but it was enough!

Yumi!!! I'm so irresponsible, now ... So, I'll need to shuffle my weapon as I no longer need the wizardstaff. Soulsword for Nether, I guess ...

The Unicorn dropped Tulkas as well. Soulsword encumbered me by 50+ spell points, so I had to lose the BDSM for Thalkettoth and Shiva's Boots for my +3 Con, Sound and Nether Resistance boots. So Soulsword for Nexus coverage rather than Nether, but the effect is the same: I'm a whole lotta whoop a$$ right now :D

2% mana storm, so I better go ahead an level up for The Serpent and Morgoth. Plus, 807hp is in the insta-death range, so 3 more levels worth of hit points might help in any close calls ... I'll pass the time by killing Greath Cthulhu, Vecna and Layzark.

OK, I'm just not going to fight Nodens. This is what a double move Mana Storm and Psycho Spear does: Yup, it brought me down to exactly 0hp, which, surprisingly, does not kill you! So, I survived, cast Word of Destruction, and then zapped healing. +41 speed versus +20 speed, but you are never even remotely safe in Hengband.

0% Mana Storm!! Yay!

Sauron was a complete pushover since he does not resist chaos (though he does resist confusion). 800+ hp chaos breaths quickly wound him down, and he wasted all the open spaces surrounding me by summoning weak monsters.

Cantoras was scary, but he lacks a Mana Storm, so he was safe to take on. (Sauron has a Mana Storm, but he has so many other spells that he fails to use it as often as he should).

Tulzscha resists neither Chaos nor Confusion, so was a meaningless opponent. Same with Kronos.

The Destroyer requires Mana Storms to kill, but with reflection, his best offense is a 200+ hp Disintegration breath. Hardly awe inspiring, though it takes 70 or so Mana Storms to do him in.

Uriel and Azriel? Both died to logrus breath, and were easy opponents. Raphael should prove more difficult, but should be manageable.

2 more levels to go. Thanks to that ridiculously close call with Nodens, I decided I need every last hit point for The Serpent and Morgoth. Actually, Morgoth has me concerned since double mana storms are quite common from that guy. Nothing I can do, though, so if it happens, it happens. He's a lazy guardian, so I have to attempt him. Although, perhaps I won't fight the Plain Gold Ring. We'll see ...

[CL49:Serpent] 12:18
I always forget something for the final battle ... this time, it was my stash of !Resistance, so I was left with only the 6 I was carrying. For the most part, I just sucked up the Toxic Waste, and if greater dragons got summoned, I used ?Genocide. When I was double resisting, that seemed to be a magnet for Dispel Magic anyway, whereas the Serpent usually let me get away with just being hasted.

I must say, this is the first battle ever where The Serpent did not score a single double move! That's highly unusual, and I never went below 450hp the entire battle as a result.

Neither Morgoth nor The Plain Gold Ring got summoned, and I don't have the heart to track them down now. Shuma-Gorath got summoned twice, and that is nasty. He (It?) follows on a teleport and could have done me in with a couple mana storms. On the second appearance and following, I realized my mistake and teleported it away so that it wouldn't get summoned again.

And of course, Great Cthulhu made a spectacular appearance with 100 or so greater U's. I set out to kill that guy before taking on The Serpent, but realized I lacked levitation when I nearly drowned en route to R'lyeh. It was at that point that I got tired of waiting, and simply decided to finish this guy already.

Chaos is so powerful for the end game. I do wish I had more hit points, though. Or at least the ability to hide inside walls. Standing on my own two feet, facing down uber uniques, made for some scary moments. Hengband really is a double move and you are out kind of game, and those happen sooner or later if you wait long enough. Oh, that's right, I already had my double move moment (tm) courtesy of Nodens, and skated by with just 0hp. So, I guess this was a lucky win after all :D

Also, I learned my lesson about Amberites from the last game. This time, I only killed Dworkin and Brand (which I always kill for a shot at their goodies) as well as Oberon, of course. This meant there were always 5 or 6 of them sneaking about on every level in the end game. Gotta love Word of Destruction ...

I keep being impressed by the way you've got this down to a science. Comments like your last one help me appreciate the depth of Heng. Most people (myself included) would want to just eradicate the pesky p's, but a slight chance of instadeath is worse than no chance! Good job staying alive!

Thanks! But, if you look at my last character, he died to Corwin's awful blood curse ... Full hp to -2 while turned into a statue, and monsters (nasty ones too!) taking as many free moves as necessary to do me in. Crazy! However, my memory is short. Every 10 characters or so, I die to the Bloodcurse, then play cautiously for a bit, and the revert back to normal carelessness for a bit, then get humbly re-taught the same old lesson. Sigh ...

Dealing with Amberites 101:
[1] Don't. Just kill the 3 I mentioned.
[2] Use Antimagic.
[3] Kill them at a shallow depth and hope for the best.
[4] Pray to the almighty RNG before attempting.

Use whatever method works best for you :D
