Been away from 'bands for a while now, but I've got the itch again recently. Tried the new 3.x TOME and kind of hated it, so I'm looking for a new variant. I've beaten Z a few times way back when, and played some heng about 5 or 6 years ago, but I hated the virtues system. Thought I'd check this out. It looks pretty good except I really, really, REALLY wish there was an option to turn off joke monsters. Honestly, I would have thought that stuff would have been programed out by now. *sigh*.

So anyway, about this character... I basically picked Cheng because I saw the words "Time Lord", heheh. I have a penchant for creating characters in 'bands based on cute themes rather than what is actually optimal. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. K-9 is a character based solely on the Doctor Who reference. So far it's a .... challenging race/class combo. It took me over 50 tries to get a character that could make it through the Yeek cave. Got lucky finding the wimpy little artifact gloves which bumped me up to lvl 15. I don't even know what dropped 'em. Thank the white aura I guess.

Anyway, the Time Lord seems an interesting but fairly weak class so far. Time Spurt is a nice enough minor power but it's short duration makes it more of a useful novelty than something for a low level character to hang his hat on. Decay Door and Wall are standard utility spells, nothing special there. I'm particularily disappointed with my lastest power. I beat Boldor and he dropped a vanilla enchanted Kopesh which was just enough to put me over the top to level 17. New power unlocks, yay! and its.... Slow Monster?! ugh... I don't know how this variant handles the spell but that's an almost completely useless spell I've found in most classes. It's useless against groups an any mob tough enough where a one-on-one fight matters is going to make the save almost every time. The only time I've ever found Slow Monster to be useful is when you are running from a big mob and you happen to have a wimpy mob in between you and it.

Not sure what to make of Evolution and Devolution. I suspect it may be useful, particularly with an Androiid, for manipulating drops. The thing is, I don't know if the treasure mobs are carrying is determined at level generation or when they are killed. If it is the former, I can see Devolution being useful since you could devolve a monster and still get the drop of a higher level creature. If its the latter, Evolution might be useful for evolving up creatures in controlled situations to get better drops... i.e. when res or imm fire, evolving red dragons up to the max. Anyone know how treasure gen works? Ive tried googling it but I can't find a good answer and I know fuckall about code.

Anyway, despite my initial impression that the Time Lord is a pretty weak class I'm having fun so far with this variant (and despite the f'ing joke monsters, god how I hate them!). Thinking of trying a Bard too, as it's one of the few classes I've never been able to make any progress with.

Joke monsters? You do know you're playing a heng fork right? Just go into monster.txt and delete anything that offends your sensibilities.

Yeah, I know. I've played variants that have a birth option to turn off Joke monsters. Obviously it't not that big a deal, otherwise I'd just play Vanilla. :) I just wish the option was there is all. Thanks for the tip about monsters.txt though.

Heng is my favorite with Hellband but all the monsters seem at least a bit wacky in heng so I thought it would be funny if the option existed and if toggled all the monsters disappeared....

On 19.3.2011 22:14 z_o_z@yahoo.com wrote:
Heh. That would be funny. It's mostly just the GHB that really irritates me so I took that out.

Anyway: Bullroarer dropped the Cord Armer of Thunder which just popped me up to lvl 25. Haste Self and a breeder surpressant! Now thats more like it! I should also note that I used Slow Monster on Wormie and it got him the first time! So maybe the save is more difficult for mobs in this version? If so I'll have to re-evaluate my impression that the Time Lord is a weak class, since a potential 30 point swing in speed factor at level 25 is pretty damn hefty.

Well, 26 point. but still.

On 22.3.2011 08:50 z_o_z@yahoo.com wrote:
Ugh. A bad run of events here. 3 failed quests. The first came from a simple mistake on my part. The last time I was playing 'bands regularly I played ToME exclusively for a good long while. As such, I got used to random level quests being permanent. I didn't even stop to think about it and recalled out of Angband 6 without ever even seing Dailai Dongzhu. I didn't even consider that it would be a one shot deal. Ah well, no biggie.

Then the failed Mimic's Quest. *sigh* I went in figuring with the speed advantage and my android bazooka power I could take them out without too much hassle. It worked great at first. I took out the left corridor. But somehere along the way doing the miiddle corridor I mis-timed something or misjudged my placement and the mimic got a bunch of curses off on me. I hadn't even considered the possible side effect of my equipment being cursed and a subsequent loss of construction points. The hit took me down enough levels that I lost my haste self and my bazooka was downgraded to the blaster. I was down my speed advantage and my main area of effect attack, with no means of uncursing to get them back. When two rounds later one of the mimics summoned energy hounds and some trolls I knew I had to bail. Lesson learned: always carry ?oRemove Curse when playing an android.

Then the quest of "It" on Ang25. I have no idea what happened there. I was beating It up handily when it teleported away. I scoured the level looking for It. Went through 27 flasks of oil worth of searching and I never saw It again. Weird. I can only assume it must have teleported to some corner that I never found. Are there unconnected dungeon pockets possible in this variant? Whatever the case, I had to bail after my oil ran out.

The last bit of unpleasant strangeness. I've been stuck at lvl 25 despite quite a bit of equipment upgrade. The biggest puzzler: I was using a +5, +7 scimitar with a chaotic brand. Found Forsagil, a significant upgrade in damage and resists and it actually gives less construction points than the little scimitar. The chaotic brand must be majorly over-valued. Ah well... the trade off still keeps me at lvl 25 so I will stick with Forsagil, but it's disappointing that finding my first artifact weapon didn't raise me a level.

Mana is still an issue, despite several Int raises, as is spell failure. Nice thing though is that slow monster has been working about 50 percent of the time on uniques so nothing's been too terribly rough so far. Rich the Thief was a pain, with all the bouncing around the dungeon but I got lucky with a few wand of wonder shots on him which did the trick.

On 22.3.2011 15:28 Djabanete wrote:
Ah, there is birth option "random quests must be completed." If you set that to "yes" then even if you leave the level, the quest will still be there until you beat that. But that does only apply to random Angband quests and not the Cloning Pits etc.

The Mimic's Treasure is very difficult. Awful things can happen to you in there. But the reward isn't too great anyway, so don't sweat it.

"It" is very difficult to find, especially as a Time Lord who doesn't have any monster detection. Disconnected dungeon pockets should not be possible, but maybe there was an area closed off by a secret door that you failed to find? The best way to locate "It" is to use the look command and then use directional keys in the direction you think he's in.

Rich the Thief is really annoying, he tends to rocket around and not do much of anything. Best way to kill him is to stay put and pelt him with ranged attacks if you can.

Items' construction value can be a bit unintuitive. Often the item that should be the best doesn't give the most constructive points. Just one more thing you need to weigh when you choose equipment!

On 22.3.2011 15:39 Djabanete wrote:
From your quest log it looks like you tried the quests in slightly the wrong order. Before you take on the Mimics, you should at least go through the Sewer (in Telmora), the Orc Camp and Doom Quest I (in Angwil), the Old Man Willow Quest and Dark Elven Lords (in Outpost), and the Vapor Quest (in Morivant). If you're careful those should be doable. Also, Time-Lords are pretty good at The Vault, and the reward for that is Sting, which is a really nifty sword. If you want to try the Vault (after the above quests), just fail the Logrus Master on purpose (he can do nasty things like raw logrus and summon demon) to unlock the quest. If you do the Vault, keep these things in mind:
(0) Keep as many buffs on as you can throughout the quest, especially haste and resistance if you can manage it.
(1) Navigate using scrolls of teleport; the time you spend walking around, the more likely it is that monsters will wake up and your buffs will wear off.
(2) Use the equipment that gives the best possible stealth, including the Elven Cloak from the Orc Camp.
(3) Use the Rod of Detection from the Vapor Quest to figure out which node is the easiest. Explore them from easiest to hardest and hope you find Sting fast. Sometimes you luck out and the quest is a piece of cake.
(4) If you do it right, you will kill hardly any monsters. Just grab that sword and run.
(5) Bring your best healing potions: Healing, Curing, and Critical Wounds are very useful in a pinch.
If you can get Sting your game will become a lot easier. But don't do the Vault unless your stealth is at least Excellent.

Good luck!

Wow! Thanks for the tips. I vaguely remember all these quests but it's been so long since I played Heng or Z, I didn't really know what order to do them in anymore. I'll probably try to go through at least a few of those quests you mentioned next since the Angband random ones are getting a bit tough at this point.

On 23.3.2011 11:43 z_o_z@yahoo.com wrote:
I just had an epiphany, and I am ashamed I didn't think of it earlier. The android/time lord is actually a very potent combo for a very simple reason. All this time since I turned level 25, I have been slogging it out, meleeing with mobs. I have been playing the game wrong!

It's very simple:

I have the power of Evolution
I have the power of Haste Monster
I have a capture ball.
And finally and most importantly:
I am an android, I don't give a $@#! about getting the xp from killing mobs myself!

Duh.

So after this realization I pop down to Angband and in the second room I come across there's a 2 headed hydra.

Perfect!

Yeah.... this is a much better strategy than melee!

Wow! That's pretty nifty! ... What level is your hydra now, 11-headed? Pretty smart!

Ack! I was doing so well too! Found a baby MHD and evolved it up to ancient and was letting it run wild. I'm still not sure how that Spectral Tyranosaurus took me out. Think I'll try this combo again though. I was having fun. Wish there was some quicker way to get past the initial slowness though.

Stupid nether breath! And stupid me for getting in the path of it breathing at my pet D.

Spectral T-rex's are some of the most deadly monsters for their level. I've lost *very* promising chars to them before. Good luck with K-10!

I seem to have bad luck with T-rexes in general. I had a sure fire lvl 50 winner in Steamband killed by a T-rex because I wasn't paying close enough attention.

And actually, following the Doctor Who reference, the next character would be K-9 Mk II, if I do this combo again. Still thinking about maybe fiddling with a Bard though. (pardon the pun)
