CL13, DL11. Poor Pi. She's off to a rocky start. She tried diving a bit after an uneventful DL1, but soon found herself diseased, and with her INT, finding a path back to the surface is no easy task. She was badly stat drained by the time she resurfaced and after buying the cure disease was about 10 GP short on the restore grace (her DEX was really bad). Ditto the second and third trips to the surface. She finally came up with enough GP to restore her stats, but has little else to show for the first 10 levels and has already narrowly survived several brushes with death.

CL16, DL15. Found an enchanted pike that doubles my damage output and gives a nifty plus to hit despite Pi's uncomfortable feelings toward it. Also got a Phial. Gee, I wonder which one it could be? Gonna try diving a little more.

CL21, DL25. I found a couple of nice weapons and SI but still no FA, and more disturbingly even though I seem to be strong enough to survive I keep finding myself in life threatening situations.

CL23, DL26. It almost killed me, several time, but eventually I cleared 26. Damn sabre tooth tigers, umber hulks. As an afterthought I went back to kill the previously detected Golfimbul, who was much easier that I thought he would be. He dropped Gauntlets of Free Action. Woo Hoo.

CL26, DL31. Got smacked down on ~DL30 or so. I though I was a goner, so much so that I used every resource I had trying to survive, so after my near death experience, I was barely able to make it to the stairs, deeper of course, but eventually made it back to town.

I had a nice ball and chain for a brief period, before it got *cursed*. Discovered a large vault on DL31 with a lot of WIS boosting items inside as well as a few artifacts. Also discovered that I had no way to get inside. Also discovered that nothing on the level had a drop that would get me in. Probably for the best. I had no solution for the things that awaited me inside, not that I wasn't going in anyhow.

It's fun reading about your adventures. Useful too, for balancing purposes.

In Fay 1.2 you would almost certainly at this point have a permanent +2 to one stat and +1 to another (from a deity). And possibly some temporary deity bonuses, too.

CL29, DL37. Moving deeper now with relative comfort. Not being chased off of levels anymore. Colannon's teleport activation is a huge help. I've realized that my spells are geared to healing rather than offense (and devices are pretty useless with my INT) so I've been trading CHA for CON and using my bow and mushrooms/vials at range. After being scarce all game, twelve ID's showed up in town on my last trip. Just one point of INT/WIS from gaining lore proficiency. Also began leaving un-ID'd items with 100% fail on the dungeon floor. It feels wrong, but it's necessary.

On 25.11.2011 21:43 Mikko Lehtinen wrote:
Nice to see Pi Napl prosper!

Some identifying help is coming up in Fay 1.2. Circles of Knowledge (relatively common) add +7 to Lore table when you stand in them. That means INT+WIS 15 is enough for Lore and INT+WIS 26 is enough for *Lore* (Identify Pack & *Identify*).

Spells 20 ft, that's funny!

Actually CHR affects devices in Fay, not INT.

On 25.11.2011 23:30 buzzkill wrote:
Oh, that explains it. I thought that INT determined item failure rate, and CHR range (for devices and spells).

Actually without access to lore, ID it tough but doable. I ID-by-use a lot of rings and amulets, scrolls and potions, and happile mushrooms being a shaman. I been burned a bunch of times, but I am still alive. My latest misadventure occurred when a read an unknown scroll of summon dragon. A drolem appeared. It breathed. I died, but came back once again.

2 cents: I'd slow the the near death process. It's unclear what just happened even if you know what just happened. Maybe throw a couple of dire messages and hard stops in there (press C to continue) to drive home the point, and for flavor (and to prevent frustrated mashing of the keyboard leading to perma-death).

Scrolls of Summoning are fun. Circles of Summoning (coming soon) are even more fun. :)

Hard stops are a good idea.

CL30, DL46. Well, I bit it again, this time due to a poison breath out of the darkness. Survived again. I'm pretty sure that I'm out of second chances. Discovered that rings of mana operate on a scale of 10x, so the one I just bought at the BM almost doubled my mana. Can't help but think that I'm due for a new weapon soon. Had to pass on another vault. Every time I tried to enter it a unique stepped out to greet me. I killed the 'of Umbar' brothers, but there were others I couldn't handle. I'll be glad when I'm charismatic enough to use a wand of TO.

It would be nice if permanent walls looked a little different than granite walls/secret doors. Looking at all the walls of a vault for a way in doesn't add anything to game play.

On 26.11.2011 10:43 Mikko Lehtinen wrote:
There will be no more greater vaults in 1.2, so no more permanent walls either. I've found they don't really work in Fay.

Do you think you will miss the greater vaults, or are you happy to get rid of them?

On 27.11.2011 04:32 buzzkill wrote:
I spent a ton of time 1/3 clearing a greater vault with nothing of great import in it. I had to TL off the level I stupidly opened the second 1/3 of the vault with Kalvax and Smaug within. I knew they were there (or somewhere) but I just wasn't thinking. Anyhow, after that I couldn't make it to a staircase, because a nether hound (or nether something) nearly killed me, so I had to use my last TL.

The next level had Aunphaduel and then an Etheral Wrym was summoned, and also a death quasit. I couldn't find a place to rest, make it to a staircase or lay my hands on those boots of speed +6 I detected.

I was close to the stairs, maybe 50', when I got sandwiched between the vortices and the wyrm. I was blind at the moment, the CCW weren't quite cutting it.

Congrats for making it to the level 50! In 1.2, you would have met the final enemy Thin White Duke there.
