And now we present to you another edition of Great Rewards for Dumb Mistakes (tm).

Went into Orc Camp way too early, because my first 3 Angband quests were uber easy with Shout at a distance. I figured if I could take Lagduf, I can take Golfimbul, right? So, load up with 30 !oCCW and 40 ?oTeleport, and go in.

And realize that with my piddly 4d4 Shout, horrendously low AC, and no corridors, this was going to be a problem.

So, I spend something like 20 !oCCW and 30 ?oTeleport luring orcs around to the right side, finally teleported near the nook on the left with the Sapper, and got a foothold where I could rest. Managed to detection range pull orcs a few at a time, and killed them all. Golfimbul drops a Jewel-Encrusted Crown... no, wait, that's not a crown! That's Multihued DSM! OMG!

OK, now I'm going to take it slowly and NOT die early in the Vault or Barrow Downs.

[DL Barrow Downs] [CL 29] 1:34

Thanks to a lucky curse from a Barrow Wight, a Granite Wall was summoned in the quest. So after I cleared all the wights, it was farming time! I eventually stopped it, as I think I can get better from the Cloning Pits. AC is not too bad at 82, but it's a little lower than I'd like. The major problem is a lack of offensive capability. With 3 blows for 79 damage and at +2 speed, I don't think I stand a chance against chain-summoning Gachapins and Father Dagons. Plus, I pretty much aggravate.

Going through the Angband quest, I feel that the Rage-Mage is actually fairly well balanced up to this point. They're a bit light on damage, but both Shout and Greater Shout are not only area attacks, they also are Sound and tend to stun the enemy.

Resist Disenchant is a life-saver for fighting the various disenchanting uniques. Crude Mapping is small in radius, but useful.

SP drains to 0 basically within 5 rounds of engaging an enemy, but 1 or 2 Focus Rage is usually enough to get the buffs I need (Spell Reaction and Barbaric Resistance).

The parts that aren't well balanced, IMO, are Detect Magical Foes and Spell Reaction. Detect Magical Foes probably should have a larger radius. For Spell Reaction, there are two problems: (1) I meant for the Haste to occur when you're *targeted* by a spell, rather than when you're damaged by one. Given the Rage-Mage's high saving throws, currently Spell Reaction hardly ever works against cursers--could we fix this? (2) The Haste duration is, like, really, really short. Too short for even me. Let's bump it up from 2 turns to 4.

Regarding Awesome Blow, I see it as more of a utility spell, but maybe the damage/distance is in fact too low to be useful. Let's make the max push range 6 squares (9 for berserking). That means damage cap will be 450 if you can manage Berserk and placing the opponent against a wall, which sounds a bit high to me, but maybe this situation is too hard to regularly arrange. (If we do make this change, the cost/fail of Awesome Blow needs to be bumped up again.)

Man, Giganto was tough! Let's see, he casts 1 in 9, so he doesn't show up on Detect Magical. He breathes Nuke on me from out of LoS, I teleport. I buff up with Spell Reaction and Barbaric Resistance and re-engage using Greater Shout. He does Water Balls instead. I teleport again after knocking 3 stars off him, heal up, and try meleeing him, only to find myself severely outclassed in this regard.

So teleport again, and this time I spotted some Orcs. Infernal Deal to the rescue, I quickly heal up on them, and re-engage once more using Greater Shout. Again, we trade Shout for Water Balls, and again I'm losing. I ?oPhaseDoor instead, out of LoS, heal up with !oCCW, and continue battling, finally winning after burning like 20 !oCCW.

Yeah, by the way, he's +0 speed. Definitely not ready for Cloning Pits.

103 AC! OK, he's ready for the Queen Ant, if not for all the rest. Time to hover around DL 37 looking for her.

Well, I got bored trying to find the Queen Ant in the dungeons, and went ahead and tried the cloning pits. Teleport to the left side, and was able to kill all the melee monsters across the chasm using Greater Shouts. The nice thing about Rage Mages is that you never run out of SP while actually fighting. Next, the Its were a little troublesome as they started summoning a bit. But again, Greater Shout is a cone attack, and I was able to stun them enough and finish up with melee. I then went around up North killed off the remaining melee uniques, lured out the Queen Ant, and went to town leveling up.

At Level 40, I was really stuck trying to figure out what to pick... honestly, nothing else was really all that useful. After some deliberation, I took Merchant's Friend over Astral Guide.

Anyway, I finished leveling to 50, and realized that I made yet another dumb mistake... the Fire Ants destroyed all my ?oTeleport and my 2 _oSpeed, so there was no way I can fight the Father Dagons and Gachapins.

So... quest failed, but CL 50. Not too bad a trade.

Not quite ... If you fight 1v1 Greater Shout costs 21sp but you only regain 8 to 12sp. For me, fighting is Focus Rage, Shout, Focus Rage, Shout, ... Occasionally I can shout 2 rounds in a row but I'm only averaging about 60 damage per round overall.

Working through the math, I see that you are correct; I guess the Grendels and Toms were usually clustered enough and far enough that I could catch at least two of them.

I'm open to reducing the cost of Greater Shout, if you feel the game is currently too difficult for non-Demigods.

[DL Lair 60] [CL 50] 5:24

Man, that was some horrible run through the Vapor Quest. Picked up Puny, Aching Joints, and Black Aura. It took selling something like 6 artifacts to accrue enough money to clear those (and of course, Black Aura was last to go).

Carefully exploring the Lair. I took down 1 Ice Wyrm, although I had to teleport twice to heal up to do it. AMHD can be done in 1 go. I also stupidly took Mana Clash for my second Sound and the Fury... if I had taken Force Branding instead, then my Mace of Disruption would be seeing good use!

[DL Old Casle = Falis] [CL 50] 6:40

So the common reward the Old Castle is Falis. Against non-Undead Evil while Force-branded, it's marginally stronger than my vanilla Mace of Disruption. But it does cover SI, which I was sorely lacking, so I'll use this for now. 2 copies of Sound and the Fury in the Old Castle, so I got Berserk and Force Brand. Now, if only I can get my hands on a copy of Dire Ire for Ragestrike! 857 damage with a full mana bar!

Actually, Falis is supposed to be the top tier reward. I had them backwards in the town file. You'll see the low reward once I do the quest ;)

Oh... really? It seemed liked with the Force Branding, the top tier reward some be something like Aglarang or Glaive of Pain.
