So its going pretty good, just thought i'd post this one. I found out that you can indeed use Dominate on some uniques, not sure if its just the natural ones but, used it on " Gwaihir the Windlord" and it worked. im now level 32 with a base speed of 25 :)

He hits really hard, but has no resistance so ill have to be careful.

Hmm, i just had a thought. I know my pet is unable to deliver the killing blow on a Unique, at 1 hp it stops taking damage. and i need to finish it off. I wonder if this works for all monsters attacking a unique as well. I might have an invincible pet on my hands :).

I am a little wary to test this out though, and am still searching for a more durable mount.

On 3.5.2013 19:16 chris wrote:
I would not recommend testing your hypothesis. The code suggests that your unique mount can escape you if it becomes significantly wounded for too long, though I've never tested this out.

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense. I'll find myself something a little more sturdy then. I'm going to take evasion at level 40 "if i make it that far" and see if any of the dragon uniques. or maybe the Phoenix can be charmed.

Things are looking pretty good for Lazy Fox, drank a potion of new life, 120 str & con. 100 Charisma, only 90 dex but i can live with that.

Found the Cloak Colannon, this is about my favorite artifact with any class i play without a resistance spell.

Gwaihir almost died to an AMHD, so i decided to take my 3 summon pet scrolls to the dragon caves. Scored my current mount on the second scroll " The Lernean Hydra" :)

It has 4500 hp, poison and fire resist, no flying but i'm really happy with it. Summon Pet scroll's seem to be amazing in this game if you get lucky, and are playing a riding class. I'll try to save them for deeper levels now that i have a pet that can take a few hits.

I'll miss my 32 base speed, but having my pet die/flee on me could mean insta death.

Whew, almost died a really stupid death. Just finished clearing out a small vault and, dumped my food for loot. When i got back i decided to give the mine a try with my 2 new artifact scrolls.

I also brought my summon pet scrolls, hoping for a Great Wyrm of Law. Got crap from the art scrolls, resist cold armor, and a slay orc, something or other. Then tried 2 of my 4 summon pet scrolls on the 3rd i got my new mount "Mycen the Gold Dragon" :)

He has over a thousand more HP than a Law Wyrm, and breathes Light, Sound and Mana. Light kind of sucks but Sound is amazing and Mana incredible. I dont think anything resists mana.

On my way back i got hungry, and went to eat. That's when i realized i had no food! Luckily i had just stocked up on ccw potions and used them. 53 ccw, then they ran out and i ended up using 2 resistance and 5 healing.

Very lucky this wasn't a YASD post.

On 6.5.2013 00:32 UglySquirrell wrote:
Yikes!, I found out a big downside to having powerful unique mounts. Was just clearing a regular level, when Mycen started breathing centered on us, took me a few seconds to figure out that i had somehow lost control, and he was no longer my pet.

Luckily it looks like if your riding a creature it cannot harm you, so Lazy Fox hung on for dear life! Now this doesn't sound to bad, but at some point you have to get off. And when you dismount you end up adjacent to your mount.

As a Beastmaster speed depends on your mount, so i was actually at -1 speed, when dismounted. So i drank a speed and resistance potion, crossed my fingers and got off.
Luckily he only attacked, then i teleported away, and summoned a hydra to look for a better mount with.

Went to dragon caves and lucked out with a +15 Great Wyrm of Law, also have a Great Wyrm of Space and Time, and a Sky Drake for backup.

Oh, i got to try the cloning pits for the first time. That place is Awesome, what a cool level.

Just trucking along. The Old Castle quest was a little crazy, but fun. I really like the quests in this game. The other ones went pretty smoothly though.

Looking back i wonder if uniques have a chance to escape control, even if the damage they take is small, or a certain kind. When he turned Rogue -hehe, i was fighting trash, and he was almost 100% health.

Only really notable finds, was a heavy lance, that i cast Trump branding on before it got id'd. So it wouldn't get destroyed by autopicker. And The Ribbed Plate Armour of Lions (-3) [28,+20] (+3) what an awesome artifact.

I dont think i'm going to get 5 blows with the heavy lance being lazy though.

Dimension door, and swap position, are game changing spells though. Insanely useful, if you don't want to fight someone, or want to choose your battleground.

Had a couple of close calls, once with a Lord of Chaos, and once with a Jabberwocky. those two hit really hard!

Strange, just looking over her gear i noticed my Trump Lance is now a 5d8 weapon. I know it was 2d8 just a few levels ago. Does the die randomly change. Or does it evolve somehow?

Just a question before i try and wear something with an Ancient curse. Does *Remove Curse* remove these as well? and are there any items that once worn can never be removed?

On 7.5.2013 14:36 OmniNegro@hotmail.com wrote:
If this has not changed, an Ancient Curse is not possible to remove, and gets worse over time. If you want to see for yourself, backup your saves and use the item and when you see how awful it gets you can replace your backed up saves and play without a permacurse.

On 7.5.2013 18:21 chris wrote:
Are you sure your Trump lance is not 3d8 base? Lances get an extra +2d for riding characters, and egos occasionally get extra damage dice when generated. If you unequip the lance it should display as 3d8 in your pack. But if it displays as 2d8, then let me know as I don't see any sources of weaponmastery in your current equipment set.

Regarding AFC, *Remove Curse* will not remove this, but will make it so that you can subsequently unequip the time *unless* the item is permanently cursed (like the One Ring). In that case, think long and hard before deciding to wear it as the only way to remove a permanently cursed item is with a scroll of mundanity, and that destroys the item in the process.

AFC cursed items can be used somewhat safely as swap items. But yeah, the effects of the curse might be insta-death, so be wary!

Regarding Heavy Lances, those are really nice. They are base 4d8 weapons, and 6d8 for you since you are riding. Plus you can give them slay evil thru Trump Branding. However, you are limited to just 4 attacks unless you use the pet command to use both hands on your weapon. With this, you cannot control your mount, and you are more likely to be thrown as well. Still, if you are backed into a corner ... But the 5d8 Trump lance you currently have is probably a better call.

On 7.5.2013 22:53 UglySquirrell wrote:
Oh, maybe it was 3d8, i didn't know lances got that bonus cool thank you. I must have looked at it when it was unequipped. Now i can see the change when i swap it in.

I'll stay away from the curse, and riding with 2 hands is out as well. Falling off my mount against most uniques would probably mean death. I would rather be careful. Your advice has once again saved me /bow Chris & OmniNegro.

Was leveling in the dragons lair for a while, but my nature virtue was being drained quickly. So i carry Chainsword as a swap am killing in the Castle instead. Really cool weapon. Too bad its not suitable well riding. It pretty much destroys the human unique's iv'e faced so far, and "Kill, Kill, Kill" is always good to hear :)

After a close call with Biketal, i decided to spend some gold researching unique's. He was about 10 levels lower then his native depth.

I'm wondering if anyone knows if the Lazy spellcasting failure rate gets applied to class/race/mutation powers as well? I just learned Living Trump, and if it is a flat 5% failure rate its a lot safer than the spell in an emergency.

On 8.5.2013 12:04 UglySquirrell wrote:
Still alive :) Spent a bunch of gold researching uniques, just in case of a stupid death. At least my next incarnation will have a bit of a better chance.

The Yamata-no-Orochi, dropped The Hard Leather Cap of Indra, 1 of the three immunities covered :). Took a chance killing a few Amberites, Corwin dropped the Plantir.

this is my 3rd, Lord of Change mount, he has great speed i'm at base 30 now. He has a haste self spell so always at 40 speed. Only thing to be careful about is his logrus spell, it can turn a large group of harmless monsters, into a deadly group if not careful. So i have a macro set up for allow/disable pet spells.

My second favorite drop though is The Ring of Devouring Darkness, i have been playing with pretty much 0 stealth all game, and had a ring of Light and Darkness equipped, pretty much all game. Thank's Ungoliant :-)

Lazy gives +10% to your fail rates, but this is not hidden from you and it can be overcome with experience and stats. The percentages displayed should be the correct fail rates.

So your 3% fail Teleport spell is better than the 5% fail mutation power. The only thing that might be better is activation on the Trump Card (which also acts like a wizardstaff for Trump Spells). However, Trump is a very easy realm to cast and there are much better lights to be had.

Thanks for the clarification, being Lazy is not as bad as i thought it was apparently. One other thing i was wondering, are the Lazy artifacts the same in a randart game?

Looking at The Ring of Devouring Darkness again. It seems to be almost on par with the rings of power. Very nice! Not sure if its a random artifact or not but wow. Looking at the messages it seems the autodestryer was trying to destroy it. Thankfully it failed :)

The Royal Crypt was a fun level, had a few close calls with the Skull and eye Druj in the centre, but nothing to bad.

Eric's Stronghold on the other hand was one of the craziest levels iv'e ever seen, after about an hour of trying to clear out the level including but not limeted to a Cyberdemon at least one of every Great Wyrm, a bunch Keeper of secrets and all there Ilk. and just about every scary creature iv'e seen up till now. I finally just decided to kill him and get the hell out of there.

I carry around an Anti-Magic amulet to protect against the blood curse, so i got him down to 1 star equipped it and crossed my fingers. He cursed and teleported me right into a huge group of demons. I swapped back my amulet, cast dimension door and recall. Read a wall of stone scroll. Luckily nothing destroyed the wall before recall kicked in.

Next time i do that level, ill just go straight for his throat once i enter.

The Spawning Pits was a cakewalk in comparison, having dimension door, and swap position, makes Q's pretty easy to kill.

Other than that i made it to level 50, found the Ring of Ages, wich is awesome. but my current kit would lack shards if i wore it. Could probably switch armor but i really need the +con from Lions, and i hate the idea of losing reflection.

My first Artifact creation scroll was used on some dragon boots. pretty nice, but i really need to max my con right now.

Level 76 quest was Ithaqua the Windwalker, i summoned a Sky Drake and a Great Wyrm of Law, and let them soften him up a bit before i engaged. Fight was pretty smooth after that.

Ran into a Tonberry, took a few test swings against him before running away like a little girl. Those guys are freakishly dangerous close range! Took him out with my sling, and made a note to walk softly around those guys.

Not really sure where to go now, i want to get to around level 90, and maybe find a ring of power if i'm super lucky. But i don't feel like doing the level 88 angband quest just yet. Any suggestions as to a good place to hang out, and gear up for endgame would be appreciated.

Hanging out at L90: Try either Mount Olympus (if you don't mind Olympians) or R'lyeh (if you don't mind demons and being turned into a moron). You obviously don't need your limber mutation so either one would do.

Why was Eric's stronghold so hard? The monsters weren't fighting amongst themselves, were they?

On 11.5.2013 01:56 UglySquirrell wrote:
Cool, thanx for the tip. Mount Olympus sounds good, if Olympians are related to titans in any way. My Lord of Change will love it there :)

In Eric's stronghold, i think my Cult of Personality race skill (which i love) got a little out of hand.

I started out by teleporting to the south and with the help of a mana potion and some luck. Summoned a Sky Drake and Great Wyrm of Law. I made sure Summoning was off, turned breathing on and set target to one of the four Lords of Chaos.

I guess the Lords of Chaos or someone else summoned other summoners. Cult of personality kicked in so a lot arrived either friendly or pets and retaliated doing the same. And chaos ensued.

It made things a lot more difficult not being able to destroy, genocide being in a special level and all.

I remember thinking "Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast!"

On 11.5.2013 10:33 UglySquirrell wrote:
Good Golly, Olympus is really cool!, scary as all heck too. For the first hour or so every time i went down, the Unique list looked like i was on a level with a greater vault. It is starting to thin out a little now.

I like the perma wall setup, makes anti summoning corridors harder to set up and positioning is a lot more challenging.

I found out that if your lucky with Summon ancient dragons you can sometimes get a Great Wyrm of Power. Now i'm hunting some of the tougher uniques i keep 2 in capture balls to help out. Wow they are really insanely powerful :)

The summon Ancient Dragon spell also summons uniques as pets veeeery rarely. This almost got me killed. I managed to summon Mycen, but since are little fallout i released him.
When Bahamut, Celestial Dragon of Good, was summoned though i couldn't resist. So i got off my Lord of Change and onto his back, then my mana dropped to zero, so i dismissed my Lord of Change. This didn't work though, even with the Aphrodite half pet upkeep i was at 110% so i had to releas him.

All of the sudden i was at -2 speed in a very dangerous level, luckily i had just captured my first GWOP. So i drank a resistance potion released him and got on. I managed to recall shortly afterwords.

That's when i tried my first Kirin, very nice mounts, high speed huge ac, and cast invulnerabilty on themselves. I ran into 2 more in Olympus and after a long battle, managed to catch my current one 27 speed.

Gothmog was pretty scary, the disintegrate aura 1 is pretty brutal, but i let my pets beat on him for a while well i took out the many/many/many summons. Destruction really helped out here.

Artemis on the other hand was really scary. I only had Healing potions, not *Healing* and she was hitting me 3 times a round at range for a lot more than they healed me.

Got me down to 200hp once, and if dimension door had failed i would pe pushing up daisies now. But it worked, and i teleported next to her well my Wyrms breathed and managed to take her out.

Had The Dragon Helm of Dor-Lomin drop from Poseidon. I might have to try it out, but that would mean losing elec Imm.
And couldn't ride my Kirin anymore.

Thinking i might have to stock up on all my gear, cross my fingers and try out the 88 quest. That will be tommorrow though.

Is scroll failure dependent on your condition? If your scared or stunned etc. Iv'e probably read around 10 scrolls in situations that should have have ended in horrible death if they didn't destruct/teleport/teleport level. Out of those 10 about 7 have failed, a few more than once. Strangely i seem to have more luck with staffs.

Only my "Horseshoe up Butt" mutation has kept me alive.
If i remember correctly the chance for failure is around 1-2% I must have a speech impediment or something.

Making some progress. Though my Healing potions are just about out from fighting uniques, i still have my *Healing* and Life. Been hanging out around 95-98 in Angband.

I entered the 88 quest with everything i owned fully expecting the Unicorn, but got lucky and drew Fenris.

Iv'e decided that Olympus is probably the best place to fight the really nasty uniques like Morgoth. Having permanent walls should help a little with the insane disintegration/summoning they do.

One thing thats been bugging me a lot, is the insanity and coward mutation. I receive one or the other (sometimes both) about once an hour. Hallucinating has almost killed me more than a few times. This isn't a really big deal for this guy, but i want to try out a Chaos Warrior sometime, and probably a Beastman too. And having to lose all your good mutations to get rid of those, or having to play with them, seems a bit much.

AWESOME!! Morgoth is Dead, and he dropped The Stick :)

Olympus turned out to be a good place for the fight, i ended up using about 12 *Healing*, 5 Healing and a bunch of destruction, Genocide scrolls. But it was worth it. He summoned just about everyone but thanks to cult of personality, i had a lot of Allies.

The biggest problem was the pack of unmakers i saw after knocking 2 stars off him, I used 5 Genocide scrolls but at least 1 or 2 always resisted. Whwn i finally struck the killing blow, there was a huge pack of them, leading a larger pack of scary Uniques and Demon's about 7 squares away. So i quickly grabbed The Stick and Teleported off of that level.

Did i say :) yet. Shortly after i got my new mount a Fenghuang. Theses guys are awesome, great resistances heal themselves and have nice breath attacks. Fire aura though, so i had to wait for Immunity. I just need to find one with 25 speed, so i'm at base 30.

Well time to restock on supplies, having lots of fun, with my new weapon it has some cool features!

If you double resist chaos, then you won't ever pick up the hallucinatory insanity. And if you happen to already have this particular mutation, switching in double chaos resistance will prevent hallucination from ever happening (i.e., you get a save vs. chaos resistance each time the mutation would activate). And if double chaos res is not possible/desirable, then just carry potions of curing. I generally switch from !CCW to !Curing at about DL40 despite the latter not being for sale in town. With stackable drops, I always seem to have plenty.

Similarly, double resisting fear will protect against picking up the coward mutation and also from its activation if you already have the mutation.

>AWESOME!! Morgoth is Dead, and he dropped The Stick :)

Congrats! He's probably the easiest of the three, though. However, armed with the stick you should do much better against at least one of the remaining two. It is a shame The Unicorn is not an animal ...

Thank you so much for the double resistance tip. Hallucinating has almost ended my game more than once.

For the final two "Unicorn, and The Ring" I am going on a Unique hunt. I'll do my best to make sure the most dangerous unique's they summon are Lionheart, and Farmer Maggot.

Wooo! Found my first ring of power, "Nenya" in a vualt on 99 in Angband. This means i get to ride my GWOP before killing the two other guardians :). I currently have a nice +28 speed one.

Finished Olympus, Zeus was a puppy, compared to Athena. Had to bail out of the level, three or four times before finally knocking that last star off. Man she is scary.

Hunting for the rest of the Angel Uniques before i go after the Unicorn, but they seem to be hiding from me.

Unicorn is no more!! Went in to the dungeon with everything i had for this fight. I brought some scrolls of Vengeance that i found in the Spawning pits. Those are really helpful. Battle went really smoothly. I started out releasing a GWOP from his capture ball, and me and my Great Wyrm mount waited for him to Engage the Unicorn in a hallway. I then read a Vengeance scroll and cast dimension door next to him and started swinging.

Summons never got too bad, and thanks to cult of personality half of them arrived as pet's. Only high level summon was another GWOP, but the Unicorn Teleported away right after he summoned it. Giving us lots of time to take out the Wyrm.

So i now have a new set of duds to hunt the ring in :)

YAY, I won :)

I spent a really long time on level 98-99 looking for the ring, never saw it once. I decided that i would eventually do something dumb and it would be game over for Lazy Fox.

So i went down to 99 and fought Oberon. Went pretty smoothly, he summoned a lot but i just teleported and destructed. Most scary part was when he used hand of doom on my mount. One more and i would have been dead too. But i teleported away and used 3 *Healing* on my Great Wyrm. Oberon arrived just as he was healed and we finished him off.

Once he was dead i decided to give the Serpent a shot. Went down and found a large vault. Had one extra Great Wyrm and some walls of stone scrolls. He of course summoned a lot of Undead/Cyberdemons and the remaining guardians but we just used teleport and destruction.

My favorite part was when he summoned Jormungand the Midgard Serpent and he arrived as my pet :) With his help, my mount and my second Wyrm of Power did a lot of damage.

My 2nd win in any Variant :) This was the most satisfying by far though. Although my other a Steamband Ninja was fun.

Well i guess ill keep looking for the Ring and maybe take a shot at the Chemist too.

Thanks for all your work Chris, such a fun variant !

Nice run, I've been following your efforts from the shadows.

It looks like a lot of fun, maybe I'll copy your character ;)

Don't look for the Chemist as he doesn't exist in poschengband (he was an Entroband insanity). But finding/killing the Ring will be a lot of fun too. Good luck!

Congrats on the win!! Definitely, a very impressive character (and very entertaining dumps too!).

For The Plain Gold Ring, try hanging out at the bottom of R'lyeh until a nice big vault spawns. Use your Jewel for enlightenment and don't bother with levels that lack interesting supplies or greater vaults. Simply recall back and forth and eventually (might take several hours), you will find that '='. The Ring is a demon, after all (and your stick is 9d77 vs the guy, so c'mon :).

For healing your mount, why not use your Heal Monster spell? Seems like that would be better than chucking potions of *healing* for their shatter effects.

Finally, I was really hoping for a Vilya + Zerker gloves final uber damage post. 7 swings with a 4d77 uber weapon would look really sweet on the ladder :)

Congrats again!

Thank you! I updated with the gloves and Harness of Hell. I guess i could have worn the gloves, they took my mana down about a hundred points but would be worth it. I'll see if i can find a ring of extra attacks for the final battles :)

Thanks Arjen! Ya it was the most fun iv'e had in a band before.

I want to try a few things out but i think that Spectre would be tons of fun. Marcus had one going a few years ago named Morgan, and apparently passwall works with mounts if they have the ability.

I'm going to try and capture a Greater Cyber Daemon Angel Wyrm Lich and try this out. The stick gives random buffs and wraithform is one of them so ill see if it works. Those mounts are crazy and would be fun. I've seen 2 so far but one teleported level, and i accidentally killed him well trying to capture it.

The Healing spell is a bolt, so my GWOP reflects it. As well as haste. Would be cool if it wasn't, some pets like unicorn are pretty useless without being able to use those spells.

Found The Plain Gold Ring on level 120 in Angband. Used a staff of Destruction carefully so i could get close to him without being in LOS. "he was in a box cell on some stairs in the middle of a room." summoned a couple of GWOP, they covered my back and restricted where he could summon. And kicked the crap out of him :) he did hand of doom or something on my mount near the end but other than that only summoned a steel dragon.

Now i'm off to finish the rest of the dungeons and try and capture The Greater Cyber Daemon Angel Wyrm Lich, ill try and find the rest of the rings on my way.

I have to say: You won in style, enough to become the new #1 on the PosChengband ladder.

Thanks HugoTheGreat, i'm really happy the way she turned out. That being said i think the ladder scoring is a little strange. I played a very careful game, and my turn count is ridiculously high. I think the ladder should score low turn count, and low level wins first. They deserve being at the top.

Well found a second ring of power, and after hours of searching
Found and eventually tamed a Greater Cyber Daemon Angel Wyrm Lich. Man i used more healing doing that than any of the boss fights! unfortunately he moves erratically so not the best mount :)

It looks like they have the same rules as uniques though. You cant put them in a capture ball for one, even when they are listed as a pet. And after trying forever i eventually succeeded using Kiss. I got off of him in town to go to my house, and when i came out he turned on me. Being unmounted i was 12 speed could easily have triple or even quadruple moved on me. It was probably the most epic battle the town will ever see :)

Too bad i had 47 base speed on that guy 57 when hasted. He also destroyed rock as he moved. Oh well.

Found a bug well venturing in Heaven, i'm pretty sure it has to do with Cult of personality. When i go down stairs a huge amount of creatures are spawned as my pets. It hung up a few times and i had to delete the error file and try again. One time i went to dismiss pets on a new level and i had 96.

She traveled to the very depths of Hell itself. Climbed to the top of Heaven, and stood at the pillars of creation. Charmed the King of the Dragons. Rode into battle on Mythical beasts, and faced the gods themselves.

After ridding the land of a terrible evil, Lazy Fox needs a bit of rest. The townfolk seem happy to see her now, even though her pets seem to have developed an appetite for Mangy lepers and town drunks. Time for a little relaxation, time to let others do the work again. It's going to take ages to get back to her Lazy ways.
