Could have !PD but tried to run for the stairs - bad choice.

Fast player like yourself should use forced_descent option in these competitions. For as long as it is allowed. You'll lose hundreds of turns (maybe thousands) waiting for Word of Recall to kick in when returning back to dungeon. When forced_descent is on, taking downstairs in town automatically works as an instant word of recall. Except it takes you one level deeper where you left the dungeon every time.

I don't know if you were aware this already or if you're comfortable with it. Just thought you should know.

I am always wondering, is there an option to display turn counts on the Angband main window? That will be very helpful to get a feeling about timing.

Using the stairs to come back down one level lower is news to me, thanks!

Lately I've been finding that selling loot found in the dungeon has been very advantageous - a few times lately allowing me to by Telepathy headgear in town because I stocked up AU pretty high pretty early. The strategy you are describing would limit that strategy. But I can definitely see the turn count advantage. I will consider this in the future.

Particularly with a priest - early game really really benefits from something nice early - a great launcher being ideal. My attempts in this competition have not been so lucky, even with extra cash in pocket, waiting for that great sling...

Re: timing, I agree that would be interesting to see turn count on the main window :)

True turn count can be seen from character sheet, as we all know, but I would LOVE it to be shown on the main window.
When you have something like +7 Speed, +1 movement speed and +4 shooting speed, I just do not have the brains to do the math anymore. Especially if I move and shoot every other turn.

Looping back to the forced decent conversation - I like it, but have two caveats.

The first is (and I just did this with a rogue :/ ) that it is a bit too easy to walk down the stairs from town without any WOR. I tend to use WOR quite disposably - ditch them before coming back up in order to pack one more item home or to the shops to sell. I clearly need to be protected from myself :)

The other is that for a class like priest, which I find difficult to get a good @ running, you can end up diving a bit too fast, at least for my comfort. Maybe this is OK, especially in a comp, just something I was thinking about.

Currently taking a break from priests, but I will make another run at this comp sooner or later...

Forced descent can be tricky. Stepping back without WoR scroll has happened to me several times. I have also once stepped down the stairs after killing Sauron, leaving all my endgame gear forever at home. Died to P that time, ofc.
One time, Huan trampled away Sauron (I dunno if that can still happen). Waited 250K turns before he re-spawned. I discovered a hunger clock bug during that waiting :D
