Izanagi is slaughtering left and right in the Dragon Caves. More accurately, Great Ice Wyrms and AMHD's. I tangled with a Great Hell Wyrm once, but it took 3 potions of healing, so I'll save those until my HP are somewhat higher.

The one piece of advice I've given before and I'll give again: LIGHTNING EAGLE is your FRIEND! Of course, you have to get Gorinnosho first.

Most noteworthy item I got in the brief dragon slaughter is the Charmed Pendant, which is geared towards magicians, but is nice for any class.

Last post for today; I gotta get some Physiology studying done :P

The Crown of Amber was a very pleasant surprise from some form of great wyrm that I killed in the dragon caves. Other than that, Azaghal makes killing Great Hell Wyrms a cinch, and good training for dual wielding skill, although I'm wondering if I'm better off sticking with a shield. Probably not for endgame, but for now, the poison and dark resists from the dragon shield are critical for survival.

Seems like I've covered all resists but shards, and Cubragol may be just the item to do it :) However, I love Crimson to death, so if there's another solution, hopefully it will come along.

My equipment seems to be rather decent at the moment. Only things that I'd wish for at the moment are the Mirror "Yata-no-Kagami" and the Cloak of Jack of Shadow.

See you after the Physiology exam :(

I got spanked by the Shambler in the Arena--double lightning breath at one point took me from 715 HP to -2. Oh well, no Metal Babble fight for me this time.

With a dearth in healing items, I had to abort my fight with Tiamat after bringing her down to 4 stars. I probably could've killed her were it not for the looming presences of Ethereal Dragons and a Great Venom Wyrm on her tail. Ah well, that's what makes Hengband so fun--always on the edge of danger.

I'm also finishing up the "wanted monsters" list, although I wouldn't know what to do with the scroll of artifact creation when and if I get it; this character probably already has stuff better than a randart could match.

Tiamat is now in the Feature of the Week display case in the Museum. She dropped something like three artifacts, the best of which was the Blade of Chaos 'Soulcrusher', which I am definitely not using at the moment. Most likely it will end up in Museumdom.

I'm still running around without a source of telepathy, so I'm hoping to find the Cloak of Jack of Shadows or Nenya (haha, right) soon to make up for that deficit.

Until tomorrow, after my two remaining exams!

It's no surprise that I failed my last and most recent random dungeon quest. With only 2 potions of healing, the Golden Crown of Gondor, and a potion of life (which I didn't want to waste), I had no chance against the Destroyer but to nick it up a bit with my razor-sharp katana. Well heck, last time (for Lazy Daisy) my level 88 random quest was the Unicorn...which, believe it or not, is significantly worse than the Destroyer. When it comes time to destroy the Destroyer, I will don the Metal Lamellar Armor of the Padre for Reflection, or hopefully I'll have the Mirror 'Yata-no-Kagami' by then.

Otherwise, nothing too eventful so far. All of the Amberites except Oberon (I think) are dead, so that's a plus. Speaking of which, none of them invoked the Amberite Curse on me--which just means the RNG is saving the bad karma up for a horrendous death later =)

It seems I've screwed up my corpse collection--I killed Eric in the Castle before killing him in the dungeon, so I only have one, not two, Eric corpses :(

I did some of the other quests I normally don't do just for fun, and I finally got a permanent source of Telepathy in the Palantir. I'm waiting to give Godzilla and Bahamut a good thrashing to finish up my "wanted list" monsters, but no show so far.

I seem to remember somebody querying on somebody else's chardump about the Samurai forms and what they do. So far as I can tell, they're all pretty useless, except for Musou, which may have limited usefulness. In fact, that's the only form I'm somewhat certain of what it does--Musou gives ALL positive attributes: all resistances, fire, ice, electricity auras, reflection, telepathy, warning, regeneration, perm lite, etc...but you can't move or make a single action while in the form, or it will cancel.

There exist three other forms, but more knoweth this deponent not. Hopefully someone else will be kind enough to shed some light on them.

I thought I'd throw out some experiences I've had with some of my favorite Samurai techniques as well:

*Tobi-Izuna:
An essential, and you get it at level 1. Strike a monster 2 squares distant with a melee attack. Can you say "Hi, death mold! Hee hee hee!"

*Boomerang:
Throw your weapon for a distanced melee attack, and have it return. Disadvantages are that you fail to catch the blade, and it drops at your feet, or at worst, the weapon drops upon striking the enemy.

*Detect Ferocity:
A 1-turn telepathy. Doesn't detect non-living or mindless monsters, but it's all the Samurai's got for detection. Better than warriors, though.

*Zammaken:
Makes life much, much better against undead who resist lightning. e.g. Nightwalkers. Gives x5 damage to "evil nonliving" monsters, but really only evil undead.

*Lightning Eagle:
Still probably my favorite of all time. For a mere 22 SP and available at clevel 22, lightning eagle brands ANY weapon in your grasp with 5x lightning brand. This is CUMULATIVE with vorpal, and I've killed an Ethereal Dragon in TWO TURNS with Aglarang and Lightning Eagle.

*Midare-Setsugekka:
Somewhat expensive at 45 SP, but brands any weapon you have with Frost, and adds +2 attacks. On paper, sounds impressive, and while it is rather effective, many monsters resist cold as compared to lightning.

*Rush Attack:
For 30 SP, rush to a monster 5 squares away at most, and melee it. Very good, since the Samurai is best at melee range by far. Also useable as a range-5 semi-dimesion door.

*Crack:
For 60 SP, fire a beam of force that supposedly is "the damage of your weapon, or if wielding two, 70% of the sum." I think the explanation means the damage of one STRIKE. Good for blowing a row of dark elven warlocks to smithereens.

*Twin Slash:
For 100 SP, double melee attacks in one round. With maxed overflow mana, you can only get two of these in until you have to recharge. That being said, it's a powerful technique, but exceedingly expensive. Use only when Lightning Eagle or Midare-Setsugekka won't.

*Kofuku-Zettousei:
Radius 5 meteor blast centered on a square adjacent to you. 150% of your weapon's damage. Very good for blowing away mid-power hounds. One or two meteor blasts will kill a pack of plasma, nether, or mana hounds, no prob.

*Keiun-Kininken:
At the expense of 130 SP and 150 + d150 HP, deal "extremely powerful damage" to a monster, especially to undead. What I've found is that this technique is essentially useless EXCEPT against undead, and only if you connect with most of the blows against said undead. Each hit you manage to connect with your undead victim is *x14*. Yes, you heard that right. But the HUGE cost of this technique in my opinion makes it inferior to Twin Slash or Lightning Eagle.

*Harakiri:
=) The ONLY way to win with a Samurai.

Wow. That was really long, but I hope it helps other samurai players, and hope it convinces other *band'ers that Heng has some really cool classes, and that the Samurai is a pretty cool character.

Assume a Posture
Postures speed your digestion, and slow your regenerative powers.

Iai
*1.2 to all damages to you. When you receive a normal attack, the damage is reduce to 0 and you countercharges the monster.
--
Huujin(lvl 30)
gives reflection. decreases the numbers of attacks by 1.

Kouki(lvl 35)
increases the rate of hit. removes your regenerative powers. *4/3 to 4 basic elements' damages to you. +5 to all stats. AC -50.
--
Musou(lvl 40)
Your SP keep diminishing while you assume this posture. halves all damages to you. When you receive a normal attack, you countercharges the monster and use 7 SP. gives double resistance of acid, fire, lightning, cold and poison. gives see invisible, free action, slow digestion, levitation, hold life, telepathy and sustain all stats gives all resistance, reflection and all auras. I finally completed the "wanted list" of monsters and received my Scroll of Artifact Creation. It was so sad, the last monster I had to kill was poor Gandalf ;_;
He dropped the Robe of Incanus, which I didn't even realize existed in Heng--it has the very nice attribute of "decrease mana consumption", which is of course useless to a Samurai. So into the Museum it went.

The Scroll of Artifact Creation actually produced an exceedingly good artifact (for ONCE!) for me from my hitherto ordinary Elven Cloak--+4 to Str, Dex, Con, and Immunity to Cold! BAM! Hopefully I picked a name that's not too cheesy for it.

I finally got the Jewel from Cantoras, but I'm still debating whether the Telepathy from the Palantir would be better for the moment. The ESP Nature that came with Fingolfin will make life much easier against quylthulgs in any case.

Oh yes, Bahamut and Godzilla were wanted monsters, so they're dead, and so is Cerberus, and several other uniques. I hope I survive my eventual fight vs. Nodens and the Unicorn.

Sorry for posting so often, but I just have to after getting my favorite armor: the Leather Jacket of Shiva's Avatar. This resulted swapping out Sacred Knights for Pitch Dark Night to patch up rDark. I was previously wearing Hithlomir, which was nicely generated with Resist Shards. It's also nice that Crimson (which I got way early) was generated with Resist Disenchantment, as that resist is not as frequently encountered as one might like.

WINNER!!!

My first Samurai winner ever, and in a rather good play time as well. Izanagi decided donate all of his proceeds to the Museum (except for his lucky amulet and endgame kit) to fish at the peaceful pond in Morivant.

Eventually, he got bored and committed Seppuku, and found the meaning of Bushido in the final moments of his triumphant life.

I added Title: ***WINNER*** so angband.oook.cz will hopefully recognize this dump as a legitimate winner, since it is according to Hengband standards.

Good luck to all you Hengbanders and other *banders, and farewell!

Congratulations and Well Done!! Was +35 speed enough for the final battle? I hate that Dispel Magic ...

On 17.5.2004 19:14 kingvictory2003@yahoo.com wrote:
+35 was definitely enough, but yes, dispel magic gobbled up more than a few of the potions of speed I brought with me.

You might want to bring more healing than I had with me, though--it just BARELY lasted me through the fight! I had:

8 potions of Healing
1 potion of *Healing*
7 potions of Life
Golden Crown of Amber

...and I used them ALL. Including 2 potions of Invulnerability I had with me. Anytime I got very low on HP, I would phase door and quaff a few potions of healing, but as you can imagine, those disappeared rather rapidly.

The Serpent summoned Morgoth twice, and I had to blow him up with scrolls of destruction. Unfortunately, the first time, I caught the Serpent in the Destruction as well, and in Heng, the Serpent is just bumped back a few paces, and restored to full health.

I also had the bonus of Sustain All with the Leather Jacket of Shiva's Avatar, so unless you have sustain all, make sure you have a good amount of Potions of Life or Mushrooms of Restoring. Needless to say, I was rather impatient since I didn't want to waste time for a Unicorn-killing attempt, and went straight for the Serpent's throat.

And I barely made it.

Definitely my most satisfying win to date.

Good Luck!

Victor
