Have finished the Barrow Downs and will continue to the Misty Mountains. The emperor wight of carn dum did not prove to be too hard. Used wand of heal monster to damage him and then acid bolt once charges were done. Luckily he did not cast a nether bolt on me - those things are deadly if you don't have resist nether.
Badly need some means of see invisible as well as resist confusion and blindness. The cap of Thengel would be really handy if it showed up but I'm not counting on it.

Can some one fill me in on the uses and benefits of runes? For example, how to use, what to use them on, and can I create powerful weapons with them? Another question is how does one use maps?

On 15.12.2006 23:19 redelmansidi wrote:
You can use runes either to cast spells with or to inscribe them on objects. The effect on objects depends on the object type, the rune type and the number of runes. For most runes to have an effect you need two or more of them. You can find out more information about this in runes.txt in the lib\edit library.
In order to cast a spell from a rune you need to have a combination of runes in the inventory.
Maps are used just by having them in the inventory. Once you have the map and are in the wilderness you can press '<' to travel. In the current version the game usually crashes when you have maps in the inventory so be careful to save your game.

Upgraded to the bug fix version. So far no bugs to report.
Pancho easily sped through the misty mountains and the great goblin fell in four turns. Beorn is always more of a challenge but I used my usual method of throwing a flask of oil at him and then teleporting away and waiting for him to burn down to one star and teleporting back to finish the job.
Also finished Mirkwood. Bought most of the spellbooks in the town at the bottom. After that the king of the elves was easy. I managed to slow him down in the begining and then used acid bolt III to off him. He is usually quite dangerous but this time he did not fire any arrows at me.
Next up is Smaug but I want to level up first. I will also need some form of temporary fire resistance as his breath is dangerous with just one resist.
Still don't have resist blindness or confusion.
I also hope to get a better means of see invisible soon.

On 18.12.2006 22:24 redelmansidi wrote:
After leveling up and gaining the resist fire spell I went to get Smaug. With double resist fire he proved to be quite easy. Just used acid bolt III and phased whenever he came too close. Currently I'm at Rivendell and I'm still unsure where to go next. All the upcoming destinations are very tough in terms of their guardian. My previous characters were killed by both Carahdras and the watcher in the water. I haven't tried Isengard but I'm guessing Saruman isn't any easier than the previous two. I think I'll try my luck with Caradhras - as far as I recall he was weakened somewhat in this version.
My equipment hasn't changed much and definitely needs much improvement, especially a new weapon.

On 20.12.2006 01:35 redelmansidi wrote:
Going to Caradhras was a good choice. The shadow of Caradhras was not as powerful as he once was and I was able to defeat him and his friends by using Sunburst which is an excellent spell which very few monsters resist. Found the amulet of Carlammas which provides a nice addition to constitution.
Will continue to Parth Galen.

The shadow of Caradhras is... a shadow of Caradhras. You'll run into the real thing later on.

Thanks heaps for all the feedback, in particular on spells. In general, are you having problems with monsters resisting certain elements, or do you just switch to another spell attack?

On 20.12.2006 18:06 redelmansidi wrote:
Pancho is no more... an unfortunate series of events led to his untimely demise.
I initially went to Parth Galen as planned, and met Gorlim there. Was able to defeat him without much trouble but in the process my spellbook incantations and illusions was destroyed by a water bolt. As I didn't have any other means of satisfy hunger and it can be quite hard finding food in the wilderness I decided to head to Edoras thinking I would be able to return to Parth Galen later.
Unfortunately, this proved to be a one way trip. In Edoras I couldn't find the spellbook either and decided to give Wormtongue a try. That proved to be a mistake as my dump shows.

Andrew - as for your question, I have found that I usually have a spell to counter every resist. The only monster I had a problem with was a power drake until I found that he does not resist water and killed him with water bolt. It would be great if summoning spells could also be added as I think it makes the game more interesting.
When is version 0.6.2 coming out?

On 20.12.2006 18:29 andrewdoull@gmail.com wrote:
Hmm. I was hoping you'd have to make a trade-off between

a) having high-damage spells in one area, which could be resistable

b) having less damaging spells, but able to overcome more resistances

Agreed summoning spells would make it more interesting, but that's a post 0.7.0 item. I want to get quests implemented first.

0.6.2 - depends. I should be able to get an alpha out over Xmas / New Years. It really depends how stable that is, and how much play testing and feedback I get.

And how much I spend celebrating..

On 20.12.2006 18:43 andrewdoull@gmail.com wrote:
Also, you had a real preponderance of stat improvement items, as opposed to resists. Was this a deliberate decision on your part, or did the item generation system not produce the appropriate resistance items?

On 20.12.2006 21:56 redelmansidi wrote:
That was mostly deliberate on my part. I had most of the basic resists covered with my items. The only ones I felt were lacking at this point in the game were disenchantment and nether.
BTW, I noticed that the problem with maps causing the game to crash hasn't been fixed in 0.6.1.a. Is it fixed in 0.6.2?

On 21.12.2006 11:15 andrewdoull@gmail.com wrote:
Nope. Which is why I didn't backport it to 0.6.1a.

There are much bigger bugs with travelling in 0.6.2 at the moment. Generating surface wilderness just crashes completely. Its not worth fixing until I stabilise the new generation code, which is (almost) done.

I'll have both fixed by the time we release the alpha.

FYI: I've added summoning spells in SVN, as requested, and they'll be in the next work in progress release (either 5b or 6).
