0.4.1 is good - skill points seem harder to come by, but I love the gas masks. Resistance to the elements seems optional to L40 at least - I just went with lots of RPois and had few troubles.

I'd forgotten how dangerous Jiangshi were, too - 36 WP per touch. Ouch!
