This is my attempt at a a half Ironman character. No stores/home, but I can still go up stairs. After probably 20 deaths getting the hang of things, Thil is finally getting somewhere. I'm taking it slow, and it's going good so far, especially with a crazy lucky find of Kelek's at 950. I've never been able to use Rend Soul so early in the game =)

What's the rod of recall for? Not a very reliable escape.

Just forgot to drop it, that's all =)

Well, lots has happened! Armor of resistance, a handful of stat gain potions, Anguriel, and Raal's Tome of Destruction! I actually had the 4th book too, but it got stolen (ha!) when getting Raal's. Anguriel is nice, but I'm still not sure it's worth it with the aggravate.

I found Raal's three squares from the stairs on 1750', in a room with stone trolls, a master thief, and a young bronze dragon. I think I lost my head a bit...just kind of went for it without thinking. I probably should have used my wand of teleport on the dragon, and everybody maybe, and then gone for it. Ah well, I went for it, picked it up, got hit by the stone trolls, the master thief stole my fourth book, and then...the bronze dragon breathed, and I became stunned and confused. I went to hit my staff of curing - but right, I'm confused. Hmmm, scroll of teleport level! Right, I'm confused. Shoot. Wait! A pot of healing in my inventory! Salvation! I drank it (ahhhh!!!) then teleported out of there...right into a pack of air hounds, which breathed on me and brought my health down to 70. I teleported again and was safe. I ended up using my staff of *destruction* to clear a way to the stairs. All in all, a good bit of fun =)

I have not tried an Ironman character before. Funny, in Diablo, an Ironman character would be one on which death is permanent. Little bit different here :) I am a bit worried about you using Anquirel. The light and dark protection is nice, but I don't know that waking up every critter within eyeshot is the best idea. I recently won with a mage, and even at higher levels I found that I was not fond of aggravation,, and I have 909 hp :) I just worry that you might wake up something that breaths lord knows what on you that you may have otherwise been able to sneak past. Still, congrats on finding Kelek's and Raal's so early. I hope your luck continues.

Thanks for the tips, I did set Anguriel aside. But alas, death by gravity hound pack =/
Got blinded, went down the stairs, then rested (my rod of curing was charging...maybe next time a staff would work better). "You feel yourself slow down." Ok, no problem, I was hasted -> rest again. "...You die." Ah, I see. Well actually, I didn't see since I was blinded ;-) I should have noticed that my health went down after I first rested...

Playing with no stairs/home definitely made the beginning of the game harder. Not being able to buy potions of cure critical wounds or starting spellbooks made me take the early levels slower than usual. Also, this was one of the first times when I played I needed to worry about food and light running out, which is a nice change. Stat drain really bites too, and I actually watched out for mushrooms for once.

Thil may be back for revenge someday, we'll see...

It's going way good! Right now I'm cruising at 2500' just having fun (just killed Smaug). Also, once again, an early find of Kelek's, this time at 2000'. Also found Raal's. And Dor-Lomin... =) =) =)

Equipment wise, Thil has found a ring of speed +10 (first RoS I found with this char), Carlammas, Celegorm, Arkstone, and Isildur. I'm still lacking resBlind which makes me weary, as the last Thil died because of lack of resBlind...that's what the staff of *Destruction* is for, in case I'm blinded. I figure it would work a little better than a staff of curing. Having telepathy -really- helps too. I also have yet to come across an artifact cloak, gloves, boots, or shooter (I don't shoot with the shooter as a mage, it's only for stats/res). Some more INT would be nice too...

Thil's inventory is starting to look like an end-game kit with all of the books, higher end wands/staves, and a stockpile of heal and mana pots. (I'm also getting quite a stash of rods of firebolt!) I'm really wanting a staff of the magi right about now, seeing as I'm using 1-2 mana pots per unique.

Speaking of uniques, I just killed Ar-Pharzon, which was the toughest battle yet. No good drops though, and nothing from Itangast either =/

Still, I can't complain. The closest I've come to death was casting banishment (or maybe mass banishment, I don't remember) and going from ~550 to 47 hp...!!! As long as I'm not stupid, Thil should make it...

clev 40! Now I can really kick some butt with meteor storm! Found a weapon of *Slay Demon* which I swapped out for the +2 INT. And now with Cambeleg and boots of Thror, my CON is looking real good =). Found a sick cloak which gives shard resistance. Still missing blindRes. I picked up some Chaos Dragon Scale mail which I can swap out for chaosRes and disRes at the cost of conf and sound...wait, chaos covers conf, so only sound! hmm, I may use that as my main armor then. I also found a good amulet of Trickery. +17 base speed, which is decent.

In my inventory I dropped a bunch of the wands to make room so I could carry some more equipment around.

Now, time to go hunt some uniques B-)

On 8.10.2008 00:53 Nile wrote:
staff of magi + staff of healing + greater recharge = :-)

Just found Vilya and Tulkas both in a small vault! Although I don't plan on using Tulkas, I'm hanging on to it for a while. Also found Cubragol! Which gives me an awesome +30 base speed. Although lugging around all my junk brings me down to +29. Although I am STILL missing blind resist! Next on my list is to get are a cloak and shield, as right now neither contribute anything.

Need to finish off the rest of the hard uniques too. Toughest ones killed so far are Thuringwethil and Feagwath.

clev 50! Only things I might want is Ringil or Bladeturner (ha!). And look at that sweet RoS +16! And I finally got resBlind, which frees up an inventory slot. I also decided to drop the fifth book, seeing as I rarely use it.

w00t! Winner!!! I used a tactic I have always wanted to use...fight Morgoth in a greater vault with corridors of glyphs of warding. Well, it worked wonderfully, to say the least =)

I spent a long time hunting for artifacts, and got most of them, but not all. I think I'm going to done the Iron Crown, dive deep, and see if I can get the rest...

On 10.10.2008 04:56 Nile wrote:
Well, I dove down to the bottom, and right away, in one of those small 5 tile vaults, I found a plain gold ring...what do you know! Some crazy luck! My first time finding the ring! (I'm not going to update the dump though, because I want to leave it as it was when I beat it. (I redid my equipment and inventory)) Now that I've found the ring, I have, in my Angband career, found every artifact except for Mediator and Bladeturner. Which I think I will leave for another time.

So to conclude: success - I beat Angband with a half-ironman gnome mage :-)
