When I played archer, I went for Archery (xbow), magic device, and Prayer (Eru) for detection. I then wore the ring, after a brief and futile attempt at Mt Doom, and killed M. I largely stayed away from the mainline dungeons. You can do town quests (and nothing else) to get to cl 30+, by scumming the Wolf quest for ammo and using piercing shots. Note that you can use Mt Doom for storage when you destroy all the towns, so you still have something of a "home."

ToME Archer is just a way overpowered class.

Going the Eru route for detection seems a good plan as well but as I'm already clvl 27 and it's not given that I could still get all 5 god quests it would feel a bit like a waste of points.
