                         (Character Background)
Someone almost killed you once by leaving a note for you
with a symbol of paralysis. He then forcefed you a glass
of poisoned wine. Since then, you've refused to read
scrolls or drink potions. (Potion-less and scroll-less.)

...You retired from the adventure after the winning.

Hm, planning out loud here. Sexy for +1 to all stats. Half-Titan for more stats and d14 Hit Dice. Mage for Eat Magic. This gives me an innate +2 to STR, +5 to INT, and +2 to CON. Assuming decent luck I can boost each of these to 18/60, so innate stats at level 50 would be 18/80, 18/110, and 18/80.

0% Fail is essential so I'll need to clear Moronic as many times as necessary. That means for the first time in a long time, I won't be getting mutations.

I'll need another 9 points of INT and 12 points of CON. Indra is good for 5 points of INT, Thorin is good for 4 points of STR and CON. Hurin is good for another 3 points of CON. An artifacted Swimsuit is +4 to all stats, which bumps me up to 18/200 INT and CON.

Of course, I haven't found a swimsuit in any of the last 10 or so Sexy characters I've played...

Clvl 38 already? Geez, you're running laps around me. Especially since this magic-eater will need to spend forever getting 80+ charges of Rockets, Disintegration, Healing, and Mana Storm.

[Dlvl Tower] [Clvl 24] 1:15

After a very rough start involving Farmer Maggot dropping only a Shovel of Digging and Borshin nearly killing me (I had to abort), I found a Quartz vein in the Tower Quest. Unfortunately, I only brought about 70 rations of food, which was only good for about 700k gold. Still, that allowed me to shop scum a little, and I've gotten myself 6 charges of Speed as well as a Staff of Holiness! I'm saving the latter though, for when I can head to Zul to get it recharged.

Two great items stocked in the BM early on! Weapon with +4 DEX, RDis, and drain life! Bow with +4 Speed and FA! I then picked up a resistance armor from the Armory for RBase and RConf.

Time to head back into the Tower for more Quartz farming!

(Stat ups so far: 2 STR, 1 INT, 2 DEX, 3 CON, 2 CHA) Selected both of my multiples of 10 for INT.

Spent another 30 minutes in the Tower trying to find another Quartz Vein, but to no avail. So when I saw a Magma intrusion, I decided that was it, and farmed 6 million GP off it. Now will the BM please be kind and provide a few wands of rockets and disintegrate?

Harden to Elements! And I got it from a non-conventional source this time... Barney the dinosaur in the Arena. I realized that Barney was a lot like Gachapin, but couldn't summon because he's in the arena.. which makes him perfect prey for mutation scumming!

Plus, as a magic-eater, I get access to Curing to remove hallucination. I kept him at one-star and repeatedly have him chaos breath me. (Oh, he also stole about 300k gold, but that's well worth the Harden to Elements mutation).

18/211 INT already! But CON is only at 18/119, and that's including a Ring of CON +4. I upped CON at level 30... and it went from 18/50 to 18/59 intrinsic >_<. DEX also looks like it's gimped, as the lvl 32 boost moved it only from 18 to 18/13.

Am I ready to tackle the Cloning Pits? Probably not, with only 4 charges of Healing and at 22% fail.

Doom Quest 2 gives another Staff of Healing... but I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet.

It looks like DEX is headed for 18/70... the next DEX stat-up pushed me from 18/13 to 18/21 >_<

Judging from the current position, I think STR and INT are high, while CON is somewhere around 18/80 or 18/90. Argh... lack of !oSelfKnowledge

A fight with Shudde M'ell reminded me that this 0% isn't completely safe though: Stunning is really bad. That's another reason why I liked Golems. Hm, I do have the Polymorph self mutation... dare I try? Nah, I wouldn't want my 10 WIS to end up as INT :-P

You're right, of course. Start up characters get extra hp. I think it is 3 extra rolls of your hit dice? Yup (wizard2.c). So, you get an extra 3d13 to start. You start with max of 13hp. Plus your con boost 5/4 per level at 18/10 (tables.c). Call that 14. You say 45, so you gained 31 on your 3d13 (Scummer!). So, your expected max is 981. For CL41, your expected hp is 779 plus the 31 you scummed on startup, or 810. OK, you are -18 :) That's not too bad ... You are 18.56/level vs. expected 19.00/level. Life Rating of 98%!

Well, finally found a Wand of Rockets (4 charges), so that improves my magic offense a little. Also, I offed Julian and he dropped his namesake armor, so that finally allows me to replace the Balance DSM (for RDis) and Amulet of Resistance (for RAcid and RCold).

It really says something to me that this potionless scrollless bookless character is easier to play than a standard mage...

Well, the good news is that I managed to Needle the GWoP to death in the Arena, and got myself a nifty Rod of Healing. Also, my lvl 48 stat went to CON, and that + Necklace of the Dwarves means I can max out CON now for over 900 HP.

The bad news is, every single useful device (Staff of Healing, Staff of Power, Wand of Rockets, Wand of Striking) only increases my total charges by 1. I've already swallowed something like 7 Staves of Power for my current 11 charges!

Also, ambivalent about what to take as my final stat up. Logically, I think INT is most important for me right now, because I think I'll probably get moronified again. But it's sitting at 18/74, and I'm not certain a boost will take it to above 18/80. STR is at 18/69, and guaranteed to go up, if I want to focus more on melee.

Honestly, I think I'll just need another 5-10 Rods and Staves of Healing.

Obligatory lvl 50 post. I decided to take the risk and go for INT, and was pleased when my INT went 18/74 -> 18/82. Now I can probably suffer Moronification and still manage 18/200 INT for 0% fail.

So now end-game equipment hunting begins. +17 speed is pretty good, but with my weak offense and limited healing, I'm probably going to insist on +25.

My Ring of Slaying contributes a full 1/3 of my damage output, so getting rid of it isn't an option. I'm at 18/231 CON right now, so dropping the Ring of CON (+4) will push me down to 18/191, or 893 HP (a 75 penalty, or roughly 8%). That's acceptable, I suppose. Hm. Nenya or Vilya would be pretty welcome right now.

I'll need at least double that, meaning another 12 Staves/Rods of Healing. >_<

Very uncharacteristically, I've begun the process of Unique extermination. Godzilla and Lungorthin were both pretty easy to kill, but Richard Wong was very annoying and scary. He took me down to 18/130 INT and down about 1.5 million xp (which is a permanent drain, since there are no !oRestoreLife).

Based on so far, I'd say I'm good for killing Destroyer and the lvl 90 uniques (except the Unicorn!) but probably not ready for the big 4 (Oberon, Serpent, Sauron, Morgoth).

Scratch that... there is exactly 1 artifact that activates for Restore Life... the Shadow Cloak of Luthien. I don't recall finding that often though.

Played around with a Chaos Hound for additional mutations, and picked up Super Strength and Nimble Muscles. Too bad I didn't get the one I really wanted, Extra Resilient. Also picked up Berserk Self, which is worse than useless for a Potionless character. That also reminded me that Random Berserk would be very, very bad for this character. I guess that's it for mutations.

No-Go against the Destroyer. Granted, I forgot my Charmed Pendant swap, but basically I could do 4 stars of damage before running out of everything. When I teleported far away to rest up to about 1/2 charges, Destroyer was back to 9 stars.

Right, looks like 20 charges of Healing was an underestimate... I'll probably need 40.

Wow, Oberon was a lot easier than expected. He summoned Cyberdemons of course, but endless Destruction is good for dealing with those. I didn't end up needing my Charmed Pendant (had something like 8 out of 18 charges of Healing left).

I think I've taken out most of the dangerous uniques except Nodens, Unicorn, Destroyer, Morgoth, and Sauron. Morgoth doesn't reflect bolts, which means my Wands of Striking are good against him. Maybe I should scum 99 for vaults and hope the big P shows up?

2 of the 3 Rings of Power, and a Rod of Restoration! My power is definitely gathering, but I'm hoping to be able to squeeze some more melee damage out of this build.

Yeah, not a chance right now against the Serpent. Going through my entire reserves does a mere 2000 damage against the Serpent. I was even running low on Destruction, with 6 / 48 left!

Unfortunately, attack wands and staves have been entirely too scarce in this game.

I'm swinging 57% to hit AC 175, so my expected melee damage is only 210 per round.

Also, Azathoth, Morgoth, and Destroyer are really annoying.

Up to 14 Rockets and 28 Healing. Last time I tried Destroyer, got him down to about 15000 HP before ran completely out of resources. And he regenerates faster than I regenerate charges :/

This is really boring...

14 rockets is 5600 damage. 11 Mana Storms is 4400 damage. 9 Disintegrates is 2250 damage. That's a total of 12250 damage. Multiply by 1.3 (Charmed Pendant) gives about 16000 damage.

Halfway there!

Moronification, but I'm sitting at over 18/200 INT despite that.

45+5 healing = 16000 HP of healing

24 mana storms = 9600 damage
20 rockets = 8000 damage
17 disintegrate = 4250 damage
36 power = 5400 damage
Total = 27250 damage.

Melee should be able to do the rest. It's time to pay the Destroyer another visit!

Destroyer down. Using all my offense took him down only to 3 stars, presumably because of the regeneration. Was able to finish things up with melee.

Still a little worried about the Serpent and his +45 speed, but I think I'll try it, and maybe abort to collect more resources if necessary.

Victory!

Well, the Serpent wasn't as bad as expected. I never really was in danger of dying. Using all my Rockets and Disintegration and Mana Storms took the Serpent down to 4-5 stars. I would then melee and teleport whenever HP < 600. More charges seems to mean charges recharge faster, because I was regenerating a Rocket and Mana Storm every two such melee and teleports.

Serpents summons actually generally helped, because the ones I left (some of the Orcs and Trolls and Yeek) came with large escorts, which means that I could nuke the Serpent with Mana Storms without worrying about other summons.

I never really needed as much Healing as I expected... I never went below 35 / 47 charges. Which makes sense, since I probably regenerate 1 charge every tussle and use 1-2 charges every tussle.

Oy, so I finally won Potionless and Scrollless, some few months after Chris won with his Monk. Paranoia definitely had the feel of "safe but slow." Endless Destruction and healing meant nothing really threatened me unless I made mistakes, but getting enough firepower to take down the Serpent was MONOTONOUS, to say the least.

Charging Rockets and Disintegrate at Zul maxxed at 4, and those always gave exactly 1 charge each. Charging Healing and Mana Storm at Zul goes up to 5 charges though, and those quite frequently gave 2 charges... that's why I ended up with more charges of Mana Storm (24) than Rockets (20) despite starting out lower (7 MS vs 14 rockets).

I don't think I'm going to ever do another character as slow as this one to completion.

I just thought of this: Did you hang on to the Staff of Magi from the Arena? With the 5 restore mana abilities, you could have really increased your offensive power with rockets et. al. You'd have to stash it on the ground for the final battle, though. But, it seems you could melee just as effectively anyway ...

Er... I accidentally destroyed that, due to Automizer programming follies (I set it to destroy all staves except Power, Mana Storm, Holiness, and Destruction.. and apparently I had that line above my line of picking up all unknown types). I only realized after I defeated the Fenghuang and had it destroy the Staff of Magi.

However, I don't think it would have worked... I seem to recall Staff of Magi not working on Magic-Eater at all, in terms of restoring charges.
