I usually play Humans but decided to give High-Elf a go this time, the racial bonuses make the early game pretty easy and even with the XP penalty I've been able to dive pretty quickly. Just got the boots Dal-i-Thalion from a princess quest, which are probably my favorite boots -- relieved to have confusion and paralysis resists covered, onward!

It's a bit late now, but if you play Mage, I think it might actually pay off to select Sorcerer as your class and simply play as if you were a Mage. IIRC you get higher overall skill multipliers for the cost of a measly 1% HP loss. (I know: it's weird.)
