Geez! 3 Int boosts and 2 Con boosts on my first 5 rolls. I picked Int for CL10 as well. This has got to be my best mage start ever! Sequoia scummed for Int on CL2 and then only got 1 random roll to Int by CL30 and none to Con. Craziness!

And I guess a male Succubus is just wrong, but who can understand the ways of Mindflayers?

Upon waking (in real life (tm)) I find that my awesome stat luck vanished. Only 1 Str in the next 4 boosts. No matter, that start should be enough. I dug a bit of gold so I could better protect this guy with ?Teleport and !CCW, and then headed off for the Sewer to level up to CL21. Orcs were pretty easy, though Hellish Flame is hellishly expensive at 11sp, so I had to fall back on Magic Missiles, which are virtually free. The reward was an Elven Cloak of Aman with Poison resistance, which is pretty darn good! Doom Quest I had nothing interesting inside ... not a single excellent object, which is probably the first time that has ever happened to me. Weird ...

Time for DL6 and 12 quests, and then I'll conquer the Orc Cave.

Failed ... but I survived ... barely! Lord Borel of Hendrake was the main nastiness, and suddenly there were 2 score of Logrus Masters, Demonologists, Ebony and Topaz Monks, and sundry other humans chasing me about. I got 3 of the swords, but burned over 30 ?Teleport before I finally was able to land in the 4th and final chamber. But at that point, I was taking 100-150hp in a single round quite frequently, and had to spend 4 !Healing just to survive until my recall kicked in.

Darn! I needed that Free Action too ...

Tired of trying to scum my book, I grabbed my trusty poison needle and headed for the Dragon's Lair. I proceeded to find 9 more 3rd books and a 4th book as well, but nothing in the Demon realm. Discouraged, I headed back to town and spied Demonthoughts sitting in the BM at last ... sigh.

It is harder for this guy to use the needle effectively. I don't have passwall or a healing spell. And without this _Healing, I'd probably need to leave Hell wyrms alone. Heck, I often need to heal versus a storm wyrm. One thing about the needle is that it does no damage, so that monsters with big breaths retain their big breaths at full strength until the lucky strike is achieved. Still, I think it can work, so I shall persist ...

I needled my way up to CL36, at which point I am now able to blow kisses at all monsters! For 24sp, I get a 4% 172hp nexus attack, and that is more effective than the needle, I think. At least I can kill uniques this way ...

Lucky break! Ringil! Now, I can melee quite well, and certainly, I think I can do the Cloning Pits. But where will I get disenchantment resistance? I'd have to shuffle Magi for Might so I could wear BDSM I guess, but that will cost me a total of 7 points of Con! I'm not ready to do that just yet ... so maybe I'll just go get the boots so they can look nice and shiny in my home.

I think I am buff enough to not need two hands to wield my sword. OK, Cloning Pits, here I come!

On 7.6.2010 21:25 chris wrote:
[CL38:Cloning Pits] 04:48
Very easy. Unfortunately, no great finds were obtained. I got Celegorm, but it lacked an extra high resistance. And with the shield, I am 66% accurate versus AC200, 72% accurate versus AC175, so I really don't need two hands to wield after all. Of course, that is because Demons can really fight. They put Half Titans and such to shame!

On 8.6.2010 00:04 chris wrote:
[CL42:DL90] 06:17
I went back to the needle with much more effectiveness after the Cloning Pits. With Ringil's regeneration, I could assume demon form for an extra 200hp, rest to regain those hp, and then recast my spells. That made all the difference with regard to using the needle effectively. Plus, my luck seemed much better, and I offed my first dozen dragons on only 30 or so strikes! Of course I eventually hit bad spells of 40 to 50 strikes to kill, but those were rare.

So, I figured at CL42 I would make a play for my final book. Its a shame I can't just do a nice easy quest for it like with Chaos, but I actually managed to find it quite quickly in R'lyeh. Now, of course, I am not ready for DL90, and I will beat a hasty retreat!

On 8.6.2010 00:36 chris wrote:
[CL43:DL72] 06:39
Back to pure mage posture. It pains me deeply not to use Ringil, but covering all resistances is waaay more important. So, what can a Demon caster do?

[1] 0% Nether Storm: 645hp for 37sp. Now, everybody and their mother resists nether (all evil monsters get 50% resistance). So mostly, this is a 322hp spell. Except against good dragons, where it totally rocks! Damage goes as high as 750, I think, so I'll get 15hp of more damage per level.

[2] 9% Blood Curse: 600hp for 52sp. I take damage on casting, and sometimes, bad effects too. I plan to win the game with this spell, should I get far enough. This is sort of like a weaker Hellfire, but the bad effects can be really bad (surrounding yourself with hostile Cyberdemons, for example).

[3] Time Resistance! Holy Cow! Combine this with [1] and I am definitely on the look out for Great Wyrms of Space Time.

I'm sure there is more I could be doing. There is summon greater demon, but that requires a human corpse to use, and I don't feel like scumming for those (surprise!).

My weaknesses are lack of double resist (except fire and cold), lack of healing (except for my trusty staff) and lack of passwall. Those are major, and probably are why I have yet to complete a Demon HM.

I'm really having a tough time with this guy. Constantly mobbed, Nether Storm really is less than ideal for crowd control. I've started carrying as much *destruction* as I can handle, but for the longest time, this was costing my -2 speed encumbrance. To kill most uniques requires the use of Blood Curse, which drains my stats, drains my life, drains my hp, destroys objects, corpses and warps monsters out of sight. A typical DL60 to 70 unique will require 3 healing to handle, and that is mostly a result of the bad effects of the spell. Funny, the spoilers say that the bad effects are for your target. I wonder if this is a bug?

Anyway, I am 0% fail now, so probably I just need to grab my big stash of !Healing and make a dive for the Serpent. Maybe once I pick up Fingolfin, since then I can swap out Anarion (sustains help when casting the Blood Curse) and wield Ringil.

Well, I got Yog-sothoth. He actually died pretty quickly. Now Corwin, I had on the ropes when my Blood Curse brought forth a hostile Bahamut. I had to flee that one ... So I guess it is just a matter of patience.

A long drawn out battle with Bahamut and I had to call it off. It all started with Nodens meeting Azathoth! Next thing I know, Azathoth is down to 0hp and even Bahamut is down to 5 stars. The problem was there were so freakin' many dragons roaming about, that by the time I got to Bahamut, he had regenerated to full hp and I was out of hp (Azathoth, of course, I let break walls and get next to me for an easy kill). I tried my luck versus the big dragon, but the second Blood Curse warped space, sending him way out of reach. Of course, in Hengband, monsters can summon in response to this even if they don't have line of sight. So, he summoned a GWoP and a Sky Drake. I called the battle off at that point ...

Only 82 uniques slain ... sigh. I will stay deep in R'lyeh until a good many of the high level evil uniques are gone, and then try my luck versus the Serpent.

111 uniques down ... Slowly but surely, their numbers dwindle. Fighting with the Blood Curse is sort of like fighting with Werewindle. Actually killing something is never guaranteed, though the Space Warp effect is not so common as the sword's teleport away. Still, 'tis annoying ... Although surrounding your foe with high level pets is always super sweet. A quick pet explosion always ensues.

Who would have thought acid resistance would prove so elusive? Either a ring of acid or an amulet of resistance are my choices, while I would prefer Fingolfin! Maybe later ...

I'm heading down for Oberon. I already knew that my DL88 quest was not for the Destroyer or the Unicorn, so I didn't bother to bring any extra resources. Nyarlathotep was mildly threatening, with big Mana Storms and the Hand of Doom. I was playing too quickly and activated Laputa rather than Amber in response to the former when I had only 300hp. But, rather than polish me off, the big guy just took a step towards me. Silly ...

No chance for the Justice scroll. My only offense for many is Hand of Doom, and it is virtually guaranteed to destroy some wanted corpse or other by opening a plane of raw mana or something. I lost Fiona's corpse that way ... No big deal as I plan an early assault on the Serpent and was unlucky to even encounter all of the remaining wanted uniques.

A surge of energy destroyed the loot ... honestly, I can't remember the last time I could pick up treasure from a unique. Well, I think I have enough resources for the Serpent, so here goes!

[CL50:Serpent] 12:47
Hmmm ... This guy was fairly powerful in the final battle. Hand of Doom does do 600hp damage, which outshines the Mana Storm and ranks as the most deadly distance spell in the game for the final battle. And while the effects are mostly bad, sometimes they are good. But when you are carrying 75 !Healing, 15 !*Healing*, 50 ,Restoring, 34 !RestoreMana and enough rods to eat all the magic you desire at the mana buffet, well, one is formidable after all. I kept my speed above 50 to try to cut back on double moves, but the Serpent still got plenty of those. And a few nasty summons, but nothing too bad. Since I was keeping my distance (The big J never touched me, which is the way I like it!), I went in with 5 _Destruction and never needed to use any ?Destruction.

I'll have to reevaluate Demon as it is a bit more powerful than I thought. I'm mostly put off by the unreliability of Hand of Doom, but I guess it is worth getting used to ...

I never did Summon Greater Demon. With inventory woes the entire game, I just couldn't spare a slot for a capture ball. Plus, I correctly determined that the game was winnable without this, but I think it might have been nice to send a Balrog army after the Destroyer ... Maybe next time.

On 11.6.2010 16:48 chris wrote:
Ooops ... Hellfire does 666hp damage, and is of course, better than Hand of Doom. I forgot about that one ... And Divine Intervention is better, doing 750 damage, but is not a distance spell. Still, I like Chaos better than Demon as a realm and would rank High Mages as follows:

Chaos
Crusade
Death
Demon
======= Gap Separating the Strong from the Weak
Life, Sorcery, Nature
Craft
Trump
Arcane

I've won all but Trump and Arcane now, but I'm not sure I have the patience for either of those. I don't know why it took me so long to finish Demon ... Its definitely in the upper tier.

Ooops again ... I've been saying Hand of Doom, but meant Blood Curse. I never got the Hand of Doom to work once, and would rank that spell along with Death Ray as one of the most useless spells in the game.

Well, take 'em with a grain of salt. I've become quite the scummer lately ... Scumming for gold and such definitely makes the game much easier. The end game is still hard, though you will have more resources. But I've lost patience with the early-mid game pre-cloning pits stat gain stuff ...
