                         (Character Background)
You are the second child of a Shadow-Fairy Captive. You
have brown eyes, straight pale yellow hair that barely
covers your shoulders, and a pale complexion. Aggro sucks
so hard that Shadow Fairies make it all worth it :)

...You retired from the adventure after the winning.

Trying out the Staffmaster, and I'd have to say it's actually pretty fun at this point.

Old Castle coughed up a mediocre artifact, 'Bull Elephant,' which is currently sitting at home since I found 'Cleaver' in a small but very nasty vault. I went suicidal to get it, not even knowing whether the quarterstaff was an artifact or not. I let Surtur teleport me in, and he promptly summoned some of his kin, which included three Hrus. They smacked me good for 1 round, but surprisingly, with AC 150 I was able to dodge a good number of attacks. By utter, sheer luck, the resulting earthquakes buried Surtur, so I was able to teleport the Hrus away one by one.

I was very concerned when rolling one of these guys that damage output would be pretty bad, but right now it's not too shabby. It also helps that I found some very nice damage and to-hit bonuses on armor, which can be pretty rare.

I used Monkey Clone against Shudde'Mell and it worked quite well :) I'm already a big fan of the ability. It definitely takes some premeditation, as it knocks off 1/3 of your max hp per use, so I pray that my staff of healing stays intact for a little while longer at least.

Looking at the comments on Mighty Midget regarding shortage of !Resistance, I definitely fit into that pool. I've been hoarding them at home, and have only been using them when absolutely necessary. I'm at the point where I'll fight greater elemental wyrms of the weaker variety without double resistance, as long as I keep tabs on my HP. I've actually fought some scary uniques on other characters without double resistance, because of the lack of resistance pots. I've fought Ymir and Gothmog without double resistance, and let me tell you, that's one good way to make those fights a nail-biter.

I'm not sure it really needs tweaking as !resistance are fairly common, it's just that farming for them can get kind of tedious.

Your AC is actually around 186... either a successful hit or a move makes it so. The only case when it's 150 is when you quaff a potion or miss with all your attacks.

What, no Free Action? That's bold. I bet your monkey clone would just sit idly by munching bananas if ever you got frozen :D

Yeah, free action is no longer the gimme it is with randarts :P

Altight, clvl 49, and still looking for that quarterstaff with gigantic hit dice, vampirism and kill evil. Oh and extra attacks too, please :)

The scroll of artifact creation from Doom Quest II produced the fine pair of boots I'm wearing now, and Dworkin dropped a Jewel that had equally impressive stats, but completely nil on the useful other attributes, such as telepathy or resist sound. I got impatient in the Arena and decided to go for the Fenghuang without resist sound. Really stupid but fortunately it decided to fry me with a fire breath instead of a sound breath. I managed to vault near its face, and bashed it up. It started to run away, and healed once, but I managed to crack its head in before it could do me in. I had 87 HP left after that fight.

I'm not sure how to do the GWoP other than get an extremely lucky poison needle poke. No healing, and no Monkey clone. Well, I guess not every class is meant to have a realistic shot at that delicious rod of healing, not to mention the *TRUE* reward of the arena, which is available only to a very select few.

So, just looking for that right amulet, ring, gloves or shooter to cover sound resist, and that 9d15 quarterstaff.

Hmm I guess I could wear that metal cap of Mughash that I have, but I'd lose reflection and a bit of to-hit and to-dam. Sounds like I should, but deflecting those damn mana bolts from the Destroyer is quite helpful when it blitzes you as it crashes through the walls toward you.

Decisions, decisions...

On 4.9.2011 18:26 dzhang wrote:
Wait, you can't cast Monkey King's Technique instead the Arena? Even though it costs you 1/3 of your max HP, it effectively doubles your damage output.

On 4.9.2011 18:28 dzhang wrote:
Remember that as a Staffmaster, you don't take damage from Elemental Auras. With a Vampiric weapon, Monkey Clone, good speed and some luck, you should be able to do it! (against the GWoP, not against the Metal Babble)

On 4.9.2011 21:37 kingvictory2003 wrote:
Turns out I was able to actually melee the GWoP with a beautiful new quarterstaff I found in a ginormous vault that had vampirism. Trust me, I'd love dearly to use the monkey clone in the arena, but I guess all summoning, hostile or otherwise, is suppressed. Not that it would help against the babble, but it would've been nice against the fenghuang and the GWoP.

The avoidance of elemental auras is gold too, and is perhaps my absolute favorite ability that staffmasters have. It's exactly one of those unique abilities that really distinguish the staffmaster from the rest.

I was thinking along those lines, that for diggermasters, who seem to be on the weak side, that they could get the ability to move over rubble as easily as normal floor. That would make their ability to place rubble really nice, and give them a neat and highly useful unique ability to compete with the other weaponmasters.

On 4.9.2011 22:08 dzhang wrote:
I think the ability to move over Rubble will be too strong. Make an anti-summon corridor, fill it halfway with Rubble, lure Tiamat to the corner, fight and step out of LoS when low on health. Basically only passwall and tunneling monsters will be any threat at all.

I was thinking of making Bury Dead give Resistance with 1/3 probability...

Been at clvl 50 for a while now, gearing up for the final showdown, and trying to take out high-power uniques. The top two on the priority list are Nodens and Raphael.

I just smashed Cthulu, and the multi-hued randart DSM is rather nice, but with aggravate. Thank heavens for Shadow-Fairies, but I won't be wearing it anyways.

Speaking of Aggro needing to die...

I finally decided to finish this Shadow-Fairy before I got too bored with him. Even with the pretty decent damage, the Serpent really took quite an effort to kill, and I had a few close calls. I can't praise Lightning Reflexes enough against the Serpent, Great Wyrms of Power, and other big bosses with elemental auras...it really saves on incoming damage. A LOT of damage.

The ultimate ability of Staffmasters, summoning a Monkey Clone, really shone on one-on-one unique fights, although he was difficult to manage fighting against the Serpent, as it was difficult to keep the damn reptile flanked with all the earthquakes that kept happening. I was able to get bursts of 5-6 rounds of me and my monkey clone wailing on the Serpent together, and my monkey absorbing some rounds of attacks. Finally, after what seemed like a long time, the Serpent finally took too many thumps and bumps to stay alive.

A big chunk of credit comes from the amazing quarterstaff I netted. Several artifacts that I came across were duds, but not this baby. Given the nerfed melee damage, I'm not sure I could have managed with any less of a weapon, as scary as that sounds.

Sadly, I was not able to use the Shadow-Fairy's blessed NoAggro ability to full effect, as this character was a randart-only character (thus, no Collar Harness), and was played before the Olympians joined forces with the denizens of Angband (thus, no Ares). Oh well, maybe I'll just have to make another now :)

Till next character!
