I've been playing hengband now and again.. it's proabably the hardest
variant out there. I prefer to play pure melee classes, and heng has
lots of ways for them to die very quickly. so I've lost a few chars
previous to this. however, this guy is shaping up to get ready and
challenge the serpent... if anyone has any comments/tips/other heng
stories, I'd love to hear it. by the way, I'm using the birth option
to 'always generate unusual rooms' -- it tries to make every room a
vault. REALLY challenging at lower character levels. also provides
many options for a quick death at basically any level under 40-45.
the berserker class cannot use magic items or read scrolls .. so it's
hard to escape if you screw up.

however, I am now reaping the rewards of the birth option: many GV's,
including GCV's.. and I've been able to isolate uniques in small areas
using perm walls, for fights. essentially all the high level uniques
are dead - the ones left are not a threat. it would be nice to find
the exec sword 'slayer' and a better source of r_sound (from ranged
weapon, perhaps -- berserkers cannot use ranged weapons, so I just use
that slot for item bonuses). otherwise I have very nice gear....

any comments? I posted this same dump on r.g.r.a. with some //comments about the gear in my home storage, and other parts of the dump. I'll answer any questions ;)

hmm actually, morgoth and the plain gold ring uniques are not dead -- I guess I should check spoilers and see what else is left. regardless, I will be cleaning up at 4950' for a while before I go down. also, the failed quests are from not caring rather than having to flee. I tried the GWOP somewhere in my mid-40s .. I'm sure I could arena-kill him now ;)

finally, FINALLY my quest to win this variant with a berserker is satisfied. non-munchkin. The final fight was somewhat exciting; I'm happy the serpent did not summon great wyrms, as I darn near died to a huge pack of GWOP's and Sky Drakes at 4950' while trying to clear an area to take stairs down to the serpent -- had to use 3 *healing* and just wait it out for my recall to kick in, in that fight. stormsword may have saved my life with all the life draining on dragons -- I had swapped it in when the situation went bad. next attempt at going down was easier.

I had two false starts on the serpent, where he rocketed me early or got in a strong melee round. at which point I simply went up the stairs (I had drawn him to my stairwell). I would go back down after healing and rebuffing, and he would be fully healed waiting for me. third time was a charm, and I got in a few good rounds and decided to stick it out. at one point the bastard summonned cyberdemons, and I had 3 cyberdemons and the serpent in my LOS with only 1300hp. what to do? I chugged a *healing* to get maxhp, and proceeded the massacre the cyberdemons. the serpent helped me out by implanting one in a wall with his shatter attack. at one point from all the rockets and the walls falling, I got down to 350hp. at which point I drank a Life. in total, I used about 4 *healing* and one Life. plenty of potions to spare. my truly insane amount of melee damage helped take down the serpent in a rather hasty fashion. oh, I used one ! of invuln too, but I think those are overrated. a strong melee with high AC and HP finds a simple *healing* more useful. I never did find Eonwe or the exec sword Slayer, both of which may have outranked Aule. but Aule does VERY nice damage. beats out calris, the glaive, chainsword, zarcutrha, and all the other stuff in my home. couple that with all my +dmg, and it was a fun character. if something did not die in one attack, I knew it had to be a very strong monster or unique. I would drop AMHD's in one attack. greater balrogs in two. etc. I ran over oberon, lord of amber, barely blinking (using stormsword, actually, for the slay on humans).

so very satisfying to beat this variant. I may go back now and create a munchkin ninja or some other interesting class, just to have some fun, since I have a legit win under my belt.

couple notes (one for Pav..);

this really is a WINNER, it should have the green highlight -- notice the Serpent quest completed. and the note in char background about retiring after winning.

stormsword in my comments above = stormbringer, of course

my playtime was nowhere near the so-called 73 hours -- I simply never closed heng after the char started. I played him maybe 6-7 hours a day over 4 days. infact, nothing seems right about that 73 number..

I actually chugged 4 potions of New Life in order to get my char's max CON from 18/70 to something more respectable. doing that ended up allowing me to swap out calris for aule, and to put on the second ring of power. my hp ended up about the same.

Good work! Now I have to go back to Heng and try to score a berserker win myself. (I usually get 'em killed off doing The Vault or The Cloning Pits too early.)

What level were you when you tackled R'lyeh? I noticed that was the only dungeon you tackled outside Angband proper and the Yeek cave.

Also, where did you do your level gain between the Dark Elven Lords Quest (level 18) and Meng Huo on dungeon level 6 (at level 34 for you)? Don't tell me you earned some 16 levels of experience scumming levels 1-5 of the dungeon over and over again?

I did R'lyeh right before I went to kill the serpent, so I was pretty buff by then. the most annoying part was getting to the bottom of it -- with all the water, it was rather open terrain (which beserkers hate).

and actually yes, I got to level 33 by dlvl 5. BUT - note my comments about having "unusual rooms" ON as a birth option. every room was a vault. you could have lesser titans, ancient dragons, etc on dlvl 1. it was very dangerous, and my exp climbed very fast.

Yep, I just now learned about "unusual rooms" the hard way. When I first sensed monsters on level 1 of Angband I answered my own question. :)

I'd love it except I hate traps as a berserker--not that they ever pose much of a problem--they are just annoying to an impatient sort like me. I can manage if a trap-laden vault is just a rare occurrence, but them being the norm is just a bit much. :)

That said, I may try the option the next time I play a ninja (an unusual class for an impatient sort like me, but among my favourite classes to play in Hengband).

yeah, the traps were a really bad part of the unusual rooms option. however, only two types really caused pain: summon monsters (especially when it summons lots of high level ones...), and the trap doors. I _always_ maintained a source of levitation, just to counter trap doors. that required some annoying equipment choices at times. zerker intrinsic sustain str/dex/con, and r_blind/conf from items, helps you ignore most other traps.

I did recently play a ninja using the unusual rooms birth option--I got him to level 22 or so through quests and the Yeek caves, then dove into the mess of vaults to be found on level 1 of Angband dungeon. A ninja definitely has no problems with the traps--however wading through the monsters berserker-style is not an option, and my poor level 22 hobbit ninja suffered the embarrassment of dying on level 1 to a nether wraith. :)

oh also, my playstyle is rather fast, like how you mentioned you're impatient. I avoided vaults that I knew would contain lots of traps, or open areas where I could get surrounded by a summoner. in fact, mid/late game, I would recall / detect monsters scum for GCV-style and Bubble vaults. it was really easy and quick to do, given that everything was a vault. no traps in those, good loot, and taking monsters one at a time with easy approach is perfect for a zerker. it almost felt like cheating, except for the fact that hengband is so damn hard in the first place ;) I encountered the Unicorn of Order at something silly like 3150' in a GCV, and that almost did me in. he breathes disintigration as soon as you're near, removing all those lovely walls I was relying upon..
