I'm pretty new to this and this was my best character to date. I'd say death came as a result of not having enough resists for the depth. That five-headed hydra may have gotten the last hit in, but it was really my first encounter with earth hounds that did the damage. I also saw nexus hounds for the first time while on this level, but for some reason none of them breathed on me.
Acid and poison caused fairly major problems as well. Any advice welcomed.

It is rare to get resistances to the hounds attacks before you see them, some of the higher level ones you can't even resist them at all. You try to make sure you don't get in sight of a bunch of them at once, and if you do teleport out of there. You need scrolls and a staff of teleportation.

Thanks for the comments, Cliff.
I previously had a staff of teleportation but maybe I over-used it when I should have been using scrolls of Phase Door. No more ever seemed to show up in the shops either.
Incidentally, it was a scroll of teleportation that landed me in the middle of that pack of Earth hounds, then I repeatedly Phase Door-ed until I landed right next to the hydra I had teleported away from in the first place! Grr...

That is rare but it happens, even very high level characters wil die that way. The only way to avoid that is to teleport away the monster using a wand, but these wands and especially rods are rare.

Scrolls and staves of teleportation are fairly critical so you should be on the look out for them always and try to reserve them, especially the staves as you can use them when blind and confused.

A high elf ranger is probably the easiest class to win with, you can avoid deaths like these using detect monsters and picking the fights. Half troll warriors are brutal melee guys though.

Plus you don't risk the instand death like a hobbit mage who walks on a trap and dies on level one.

Yeah, this experience has taught me the value of teleportation! And playing that half-troll warrior was a lot of fun, hanging around in corridors butchering single-file legions of brainless orcs, but I'm now trying a gnome mage, just to allow me to get more out of rods and staves. I'm playing in a very cowardly fashion and it's going OK so far.
As for rangers, I've generally been playing them as Dunedain, but will try a high elf once the gnome buys the farm.

Well, it WAS going OK! Got a bit too cocky with some half-orcs. YASD. Plenty of teleportation scrolls in inventory, just went a bit kill-crazy. Poetic justice, frankly.
Now to see how far that high elf ranger gets.
