Incidentally, it was a scroll of teleportation that landed me in the middle of that pack of Earth hounds, then I repeatedly Phase Door-ed until I landed right next to the hydra I had teleported away from in the first place! Grr...

Scrolls and staves of teleportation are fairly critical so you should be on the look out for them always and try to reserve them, especially the staves as you can use them when blind and confused.

A high elf ranger is probably the easiest class to win with, you can avoid deaths like these using detect monsters and picking the fights. Half troll warriors are brutal melee guys though.

Plus you don't risk the instand death like a hobbit mage who walks on a trap and dies on level one.
