Berserker Alert! Berserker Alert! Warning: The following character may offend some viewers ;-)

(CL39 : DL 20)
With just 4 hours left in the weekend to play, and having lost my Chaos Warrior, I decided on the most munchkin-esque of characters possible: A Mighty Klackon Berserker, playing with the Unusual Rooms option. The result has been one of the quickest rises to power imaginable. Forget planning your characters. Forget strategy, caution, and the occasional lucky drop. Just get in there and whoop some butt! Just under 4.5 hours yields a CL39 character, with all resistances (save Blindness), with +31 base speed, and dishing out a cool 1000hp of damage a round.

This character has been very therapeutic ;-)

I like that your ball and chain is named Nightblade.

Is Klackon Berserker the most munchkinish combo? With that setting, I might have thought Golem or Android.

Lol, I use ToME as morale-booster when Heng's difficulty gets to me. But wow, Clvl 39, and only Dlvl 20!? Dang, I'm missing out by not turning on the Unusual Rooms.

Is there any reason you have Night Blade on your right hand, as opposed to Ringil? I woulda thought Ringil in right would give more damage output, considering that 1) it has more blows, so there's more effect of the =oDamage, and 2) Offhand weapon gets penalized more on toDam, no?

Yes, I am addicted to this game :-)

I think what is munchkin-esque, is really the unusual rooms option, and the way I am abusing it. You see, I'm skimming the tops of the various dungeons looking for the kinds of vaults that have no traps, and those are checkerboard and bubble types with lots of excellent items as well as *way* out of depth monsters. At DL20 for example, I have seen Locke the Superman, who is a DL65 monster. You can even get Archons on DL1 of Angband! So you still have to be able to kill stuff, and if you mistakenly take on an opponent that is beyond you, then you just die. But otherwise, it is an artifact fest ... And a bit of warning, this style of play can quickly ruin the game for you (You won't want to play any other way!), so I don't really recommend it. But it sure is fun, though, I can't say this character really "counts", whatever that means ;-)

Regarding Night Blade, I generally like to lead with my Vampiric Weapon as a Berserker, since many monsters don't last thru weapon #1 before being destroyed. Leading with Vampirism ensures that you gain some hit points from trolls and the like, though its a habit from playing without unusual rooms that is probably less necessary now. I'll try the swap to see the difference.

More of the same ... working the Anti-magic cave, and have been able to take out the likes of Loki, Combat Echizen, Cyaegha, Cthugha, Atlas, and others.

Just found Slayer, so I'm running a bit slower than I would like at the moment. Hopefully, another Ring of Speed is just around the corner.

Now I intentionally posted with a bunch of unidentified artifacts to give you a feel for what a single trip down into the dungeon might yield. Since I always have to wait until returning to town to identify stuff, it becomes necessary to gain a feel for what is what, especially when you find so much that you need to leave stuff behind. I'm guessing Silver Chariot, Quickthorn, Grayswandir with possibilities for Hurin, but random arts are so common that you never know.

Uniques Remaining: 114
Artifacts Found: 120

OK, first gauntlet passed. Now, don't be fooled. Playing this way is by no means easy to win! In this case, we had Gothmog and Nodens generated right next to each other in a vault. The end result is that I had to fight both of them and Raphael and a dozen or so high Angels simultaneously. The cost: 4 potions of healing and 2 oh so precious potions of *healing*. It was close ...

Still, two more gauntlets to pass:
[1] The Destroyer
[2] The Unicorn

We'll see if I can make it!

Mandatory CL50 post. Equipment is pretty much set. Just need to kill remaining uniques before trumping down to DL98 in Angband. I'll use the Mines to do so, and hopefully will gain some more *Healing*.

Next post will either be a winner or a loser. Last three times I've played this way have all been losers, so we'll see ;-)

OK, the Plain Gold Ring went down in this configuration! 1 potion of *healing* was required. Now, this is the second time I encountered this monstrosity, and the first time cost a potion of *healing* as well, only for me to be teleported away with the ring on a single dangling star. No way to get back to it as it was in the middle of some permanent walls. This time, I wasted a turn to swap in Anubis! Muh! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Unicorn down! Cost 3 potions of healing and 1 of *healing*. I'm down to my last *healing*!!! But only the Destroyer remains as a formidable opponent, and I can get 2 *healing* from the old castle, 1 Life from a quest, and 2 Life from wanted monsters. Might be enough ;-)

Well, sort of. Depends on how you view this character's play strategy. All I can say is, don't judge until you try one yourself. It is not as easy as you might think ;-)

But seriously, this time I mean it. I am taking a break from Hengband. I'll be back in a few months ...

If you do have a break enjoy it. Hmm never tried a berserker (seemed to munchkinish - but might try one for a quick blast)
