I scummed for high birth. But it's gone beyond my expectations. Look at that. :) Notice the crown on my starting character head. I'm not going to sell it. It's my heirloom. I'd rather sell my Chain Mail.

I wonder whether there is any artifact oil flask to be found... A Broad sword from the Dunlending. All fear spores consumed, some poison spores, too, but I didn't have to waste the most useful ones --- the confusion spores. Those are saved for melee uniques. Dump.

...that was terrible! Is every place in this world dangerous? I thought...never mind. Let us say, there was a forest fire, OK? Just an ordinary fire. I did it. OK? A nice forest fire, that will not hunt us in our dreams. Agreed? No monsters, no talking trees, no sleep of death upon my body, just several acres of a beautiful forest burnt by me, because I felt like it? Right? OK.

Then I went back to Buckland to recover my senses and prepare for a talk with Bombadil --- his house seems to be quite close to the forest clearing, though one has to descend into some shallow valley. So I descended and there were all the slimy beings, one can ever imagine and I spent a lot of time making sure they will not bother me on my way back to Buckland. Dump.

On 25.4.2006 23:57 Bandobras wrote:
Geee! Give my flasks back.

> red mushroom spores will have the equivalent effect to the old flasks

Not exactly, since oil has bigger damage --- which is ridiculous, since you can buy it at shops. I'm not sure if the change is the best one, because area effect, especially the smoke obscuring the view (preventing monster spellcasting or not? preventing monster aiming at you or not?), etc. is a nice part of tactics, while the big raw damage is the thing that is ridiculous at low levels. At higher levels you get better missiles and wands and monsters have higher HP, so only the smoke and forest fire effect remain meaningful, with the forest fire effect no longer so tremendous, but smoke still interesting tactically.

Moreover, when the slimes start appearing I (a warrior) will be totally helpless without flasks of oil. It is really frustrating to be forced out of promising levels with powerful monsters, you are willing to meet in battle, by roomful of slimes. Grrr... After I kill Bombadil I will switch to the weak flasks version to verify my claims and die a pitiful death to a bunch of slimes. And you watch that.

Bombadil is asleep. I back off, quaff potion of speed and start throwing. I should have taken the spores of confusion with me --- I thought there are lots of them in the forest, easy to pick up on the way. Pity. Bombadil wakes up. Lots of mushrooms in use and oil. Trowing and backing off. Then he confuses me and my speed runs out. There is no point in drinking new speed, when I'm confused. Several confused steps and he is still not close to me, so perhaps I have a chance? The terrain favours him because there is no smoke and the fire, though very damaging is much more sparse than the smoke, so he has no trouble getting to me. But he stays at a distance. Then he gestures at my feet and I sink through the floor... He was already at four stars, poisoned and inside a burning forest but I was very confused, so he probably saved my life, anyway.

I was so stupid --- I should have taken the loot from his house before fighting him... Next time, I guess... I've lost lots of mushroom spores and one potion of speed, but I'm alive. And I have not lost my crown. Now, it is night and I'm desperately wanting to get to Bree. I guess I will scum the mushrooms on the level below his house for some time, to be able to get to Bree during day, when it's safer.

Revenge! I've found him on the lower level, sourrounded by white slimes. I used up one speed potion, lots of oil and some mushrooms. He left some loot, but none seems _that_ good to make up for the lost treasure above. I'm at 56 HP and dropping things to fit all the loot on me. Just then white slimes overcome smoke, I have no more flasks of oil, and they thrown me out of the level.

Wow! I'm returned to the House of Bombadil! This is a bug caused by following CVS (savefile has old wilderness map indexes, datafiles have new wilderness maps), but I accept gratefully, nevertheless! :) Now to visit his home (only food) and the Golberry's pool. Some nice swords, no artifacts, unfortunately. Then Brown Faerie dropps the Phial! I wonder what to do with the runes... And how to check what my golden crown now does.. Dump.

Black Market just has:

j) Rusty Chain Mail of Speed (-5) [14,-2] (+6 to speed) 20.0 587219
k) a Spear of Telepathy (1d8) (+5,+2) 7.0 2669
l) a Heavy Crossbow (x4) (+0,+0) 20.0 976

That will be a tough choice...

Fortunately I had enough food to travel back to the safe haven of Barrow Downs. :)

The dungeon under done, now Barrow Downs. Nice feelings on level 1 and 2 of Barrow Downs: "like the look of this place" and "luck is turning" (real depth 7 and 8), but only crap objects, like a plain Two-handed Sword.

Then the Black Market features again:

o) Partial Plate Armour of Speed (-3) [22,+3] (+6 to speed) 26.0 590964

I wonder if

e) 2 Scrolls of Legend Lore 0.5 732

are worth it. With a test run on a Phial they discovered some of its powers, but still there are "may have hidden powers" and "may give brighter lite, may protect against poison, etc., etc.". Only the third scroll read said I know all secrets of the Phial and now all the other messages about it are gone. The Legend Lore scroll also offered to identify a sword of *Frost*, which is not said to have hidden powers, but is still described with "may give brighter lite", etc.

I wonder why I have 18/67 WIS bodily, while other stats are under 18. RNG prepares me for the role of a wise king of my people, I suppose?

I tried to use Legend Lore to check what the current powers might be, but it won't work on the crown...

Quite o lot of loot from "luck is turning" on level 4 of Barrow Downs. I'm getting short of breath just lugging it all around.

This is in the Magic Shop:

t) a Ring of Feather Falling of Lightening Immunity 0.2 264

Yay! And how cheap! ESP and immunities are really cheap these days; must be those Harad or even further east guys spoiling the market. Bought. Also this one is in the Black Market:

g) Hard Studded Leather of Fire Immunity (-1) [7,+6] 11.0 2587

it would be nice for dragons, but I have enough body armor with important flags, already and I will probably need Resistance or Elvenkind or an artifact. I will wait for a Fire Immunity armour piece that is not a body armour, or for a ring, an amulet, etc. with that flag. They seem to be common or I'm just lucky (the 2 Hands?) --- either way. :)

I'm tempted to forgo my Ring of Feather Falling of Lightening Immunity and start anew just to seem how 0.6.0 plays like. Hmmm... If there was a quiver, I would definitely put Crowny on hold and revisit Oily Spores. We'll see...

Two small bugs just by looking at 0.6.0: Update to the FAQ suggests that after LOTR Barrow Downs you can get back to Buckland. Not so, AFAICS. The Hobbit Barrow Downs indeed lead back to the Old Forest and so Buckland (but not to the Hobbiton). This is OK, just FAQ is misleading. Another one: red spores do not cause smoke, whereas oil flasks do. Pity. They are hard to get, so they should be more powerful than flasks, not less. Otherwise --- plenty of great changes. That will be a lot of fun!

On 30.4.2006 19:16 Bandobras wrote:
I looked closer and I was wrong with the FAQ problem. However, there is another one in exchange: the FAQ suggests that you cannot comlete the Farmer Maggot Farm dungeon if you choose The Hobbit plot. In fact, now Farmer Maggot Farm dungeon is a common part of both plots (which is nice, BTW).

However, the The Dunlending Agent of the Nazgul is anachronic for The Hobbit plot. Perhaps change him to Farmer Maggot? Or exchange him with Lotho, who would not be anachronic --- you just kill the vermin before he has the chance to betray --- which is right, isn't it? :)

On 30.4.2006 21:15 andrewdoull@hotmail.com wrote:
I've fudged things so that you don't start the Hobbit plot until you get to Bree via the East Road. So you can explore the Hobbiton surrounds ( = East Road, Farmer Maggot and Brandywine Bridge at the moment) without committing yourself.

I'm aware that the Dunlending Agent should really be outside Bree somewhere, but I needed a low-level unique to end the Farmer Maggot dungeon with and the former Wormtongue unique fitted the bill. I guess I could upgrade Lotho and put him in place.

Or I could have a Merry Brandybuck unique for that matter as he is noted as having been a regular thief of Mr Maggot's mushrooms. But murdering Tom Bombadil (and other good uniques that you'll run into later on) is about as non-canonical as I want to get.

I'll be upgrading the Cirith Ungol orc uniques, so that they are worth fighting when you get to Cirith Ungol. It should also make Slay Orc useful for longer. If you generate the slay table from the wizard spoilers menu (^A, ") you'll notice that Slay Orc is about as useless as it gets (Except for Slay Dwarf). Mind you, surprisingly, Slay Demon isn't that much better.

Hmm... would you object to killing Mr Brandybuck and Pippin Took?

I guess, when you implement friendly monsters, the good uniques will give you quests and/or help you clear some rooms packed with monsters or kill some coupled evil uniqes (chasing them, or being chased by them, etc.) even thougher than themselves. For now, let's say --- even good people quarell from time to time. ;) At most, just change "killed" to 'disabled"/"wounded"/"tied" in the messages about good uniques....

Loot (pre-0.6.0) includes a scroll of Enchant Bolts Brand, a ring of Free Action, and a weapon of Speed --- +1 speed. :) Actually that might be usable, if the Ringwraith in Bree has no random speed boosts. Pillar-trick around a shop... Every 20 turns hit him hard. But my speed potions will run out before he goes down, I'm afraid.

At least the speed weapon can be sold for 20000! Now that scroll of Enchant Bolts Brand gives some hope for defeating the Ringwraith. If my 65 bolts get an elemental brand he is not resistant to, I might be ready for for a fight. However, if I get Slow Digestion Brand I will take that as a sign from RNG I should fight the Ringwraith with melee. Does it have a distance attack? After reading the scroll:

p) 5 Bolts of Sustain Intelligence (1d7) (+0,+0) {@f1, 40% off} 1.5 lb

Yeah. That would be melee, then?

Waiting for the night I may as well finish the Midgewater Marshes. How do the Midge Marshes look like? How bad I have no copy of the Tolkien Trilogy to consult. I feel such an urge... I guess I will try searching the net. Hmm, from the descriptions it seems the dungeon should be quite shallow, like 3 levels, so I will try to complete it in one go, with no WOR. I'm afraid of slimes, so some additional spores onboard... How strong can the rest of the puny insects be? Not very mush, I suppose, so I leave my sword at home. The spear will suffice, especially that I have one more attack with it. No Food rations in shops so I have to buy a few fourpacks of ale.

Thank you! It works again. Accursed users, they pester you about minor things, leading to serious bugs. Now, what about Pippin? :)

My "luck is turning" on level 1 of Midge Marshes --- a Rod of Slow Monster. Hmm. OK, dive again. Level 4 of of Midge Marshes. Oops. I misunderstood the descriptions of Midgewater marshes. Or moving trough the water is slower than I expected. A "good feeling" on level 5. I explored the whole level to find out it just contains an orc pit --- do they like midges? Thick skins, I suppose. I had full backpack already at level 1 and I used detect magic scroll just then, so I'll let the orcs live. Strange: all mountain orcs in the pit are shown "out of ammo". Shooting at the midges, I presume? Or too many of them in the pit for the local ammo stock? Level 5 "luck is turning" --- a weapon room, hmm. Lochaber axe, not cursed --- that's it. (Trash... grumble, grumble, O combat, grumble). Level 7 "you like the look" --- no way! Having no free space for runes, I apply one to an amulet of Infravision, turning it into Regeneration. Wow! I wonder what happened to its pval?

One Speed potions turned out necessary for the guardian. His spells failed due to my high WIS (and his low WIS, I guess). Then hack and back ten times. The loot from Nar (the first loot from 0.6.0 final) includes some {excellent} items. Strange, some are identified by Gauge and some only by Identify. What is the rule with that? The Lute of Resist Blindness only netted 78 gold in General Store. :(

It's time for the big guy: one on one with all the tricks, as gladiators do. No bolts in the shops and I have only 30 at home, so I'll buy lots of flasks of oil. Oil is said to be toned down... we'll see! :D Unfortunately, oil causes no smoke on the Bree dirt, so no chances to try and choke a Ringwraith to death. I will try a wand of Wonder, spores of confusion and fear, oil flasks, bolts and melee on him. I will not try Cammithrim --- probably less damage than his regeneration rate.

First attempt: The first use of wand of Wonder hasted him. I lost 90 bottles of oil escaping.

Second attempt: Five uses of the wand has no effect on him, the sixth hastes him. I suddenly remember I had not distinguished a camp fire in Barrow Downs --- it would be a waste to burn such a nice forest. Sorry guy! Not this time!

Third attempt:

Round one: Speed, Hero, Berserk, Holy Chant. We close to melee. My 5/6 attacks hit him. He looses one star. His 2/2 attacks in, 145/257 HP left on my and a tiny bit of experience lost.

Round two: My 5/6 attacks in. Still one star off. His 1/2 attacks in, 56 HP left. Hmm, I suspect I've subconsciously foreseen he'd miss once. Phase.

Round three: I swap for the Spear of Telepathy. Several bolts bring him to 2 stars from full health. Two spores of confusion --- nothing happens. A spore of fear --- he flees! :) Yeah, a Ringwraith flees from me! Not for long, though.

Now only Phase and bolts until they run out and then oil until it runs out, and then melee and CCW, and then picking up bolts, and then... Bolts get him to 7 stars. With 58 to hit why don't I get criticals with bolts? Is his AC so high? Or perhaps the criticals are not displayed? S (or O) has so nice critical messages... The Raider on 6 stars, 5 bolts left.

Speed runs out, but he is 3 squares away. Bolts run our. Now I will throw oil. Don't laugh! 5 stars. Woo-hoo! Oil is the thing! He tries to cast a spell, but fail. Ouch! What spell was that? Then he stands still for 3 turns and probes my weaknesses. :) Aren't my weaknesses glaring? :P

Next Phase Door takes me to a sea of bolts, I collect them, while he approaches. A wide-eyed tourist approaches. I bet he is totally frightened, but tries to show a straight face, thinking this is a local attraction performed especially for him. He picks up a bolt. I wouldn't do that! B-Z

I gather 11 bolts and quaff another Hero. He's down to 4 stars. I phase close to a shop wall and waiting for the bad guy I quaff a CCW. 181/257 HP. Soon I will be ready for some more punishment. Bolts run out. Not wanting to burn the one under the Rider, I quaff another CCW instead of throwing the oil. 238/257 HP. Time for a beating, buddy. But it seems he picked up the bolt and couldn't see it due to the lack of light (ESP does not show all his action, apparently). We start fighting. I do 3/5 hits --- I forgot to swap out the Spear. But he is at 3 stars now. He hits only once --- 157 HP. Phase.

I quaff my last berserk, then speed, then chant. Then I gather 13 bolts. Firing. He's at 2 stars. More firing. 1 star left, 2 bolts left. No more bolts. There are 3 squares between us. I throw a flask of oil. He flees in terror! Yay! He is afraid of my flasks of oil from a discount bin! I throw oil 3 rimes and quaff one hero. He is no longer afraid. Then I slow down, but I will waste not more Speed potions for this wimp. A flask of oil, he runs off again. 2 more flasks thrown:

You have 11 Flasks of oil {40% off} (b).
The Flask of oil {40% off} hits The Black Rider at Bree.
The Black Rider at Bree grunts with pain.
The Black Rider at Bree screams in pain.
The Flask of oil explodes.
The Black Rider at Bree dies.
You feel stronger.

Bards will sing you many tales about Crony, his other fights, his container for flasks of oil made of a Dark Rider's skull, his magic crown. But Crony wants to be remembered for this one fight. The Dagger and Whip are not Nazgul's, they were the swap weapons (Whip never used); the Mace is quite in-theme; prayer and berserk just expired for this final dump.

Congratulations!!!!

You can see why Frodo et al ran from this particular fight.

PS: You might want to stop tracking CVS for a little while, as lots of stuff will break at the moment.

They had not enough oil?

;>

I have stopped. As you can see in the dump of Delver, the newer CVS snapshops had (have?) some serious problems with availability of {excellent} and even {very good} items in the dungon. I guess I will catch up at 0.6.1 or 0.7.0. BTW you have some real cool things in todo.txt right now. :)

You totally should NOT have to kill good guys like Merry, Pippin and Tom Bombadil. That's just horrible!

Its good to hear someone defending them. You don't of course, have to kill any of them - it will be perfectly possible to complete the game without encountering them.
