Holy Canoli! 3 Augmentations from Arioch in 8 levels!? And he's only supposed to give 1 every 15 levels!

Well, this character is starting to come together, although I haven't spotted any Quartz Veins yet for some serious money scumming.

Unfortunately, Hunger is nowhere near ready for the Cloning Pits.. I lost a 1v1 duel against Grendel in the Tower and had to step outside to avoid death (he had 3 stars left). Oy!

All right. Another half an hour of town scumming showed that huge =oDamage(+19), as well as the most awesome Dragon Boots I've ever seen, with RCold, RPois, RDark, RShard, RBlind, RNether, and RDisenchant! So, despite never having set foot anywhere deeper than dlvl 7 and anywhere more dangerous than the Tower, I have all but RChaos covered! Now, where's that Fur Cloak of Mook when you need it? Also, a couple !oExperience boosted me to clvl 35 already.

Ready to begin adventuring again!

Chris: I didn't actually get the Moronic mutation until pretty late, while I was town-scumming (the Eldritch Horror from resting gave it to me). And it doesn't affect me too much because most of the Nature spells I cast (i.e. Detect Monsters and Nature Awareness) are easy anyway.

Note that I did *ALL* my levelling from clvl 12 to clvl 32 in the Vault. Initially, I would fearfully stand on the stairs and kill only tractable monsters right next to me (i.e. Ogres and the like). I found a =oFA pretty early though, and that was helpful for dealing with Ghouls and the like.

WOW. That was... extremely humbling. I went into the Mimic Quest, certain I would rule over everything there with my 400+ damage per round, +6+10 speed, and 600+ HP. Teleported into the open area, and one of the mimics summons lots of trolls. Phase Door over to the mimics and kill them all, and then start idling killing all the trolls (no uniques). Well, I was rudely awakened by the low HP bell. Apparently even standard trolls are hitting me hard!! >_<

After completing my 12, 24, and 38 quests with relative ease, I went into the Vapor Quest to pick up some mutations. I quit fairly quickly, after picking up White Aura and Polymorph self.

And then the fun began. :) After polymorphing myself an entirely too large number of times, I finally ended up being the race I wanted.. Half-Titan, for the RChaos and high Hit Dice. Of course, I had forgotten that Half-Titans have both a huge XP penalty and a negative modifier to DEX, so I'm back to clvl 33 and 6 blows now, rather than clvl 36 and 7 blows.

I also picked up a huge number of other good mutations: +4 STR, +4 CON, Magic Resistance, Berserk Self, and Telepathy! On the down side though, I picked up Stumble into other Shadows and -3 speed. Still a huge net positive, as now I have all resistances covered (at a cost of about 200 less points of damage per round, and -3 speed).

Well, my artifact creation wasn't a Longclaw or a Cloak of Stars, but I'm pretty happy with it. Gained RConf and +3 DEX. The RConf really helps though, because I was getting it from the Ring earlier (and from Beastman before that). Back to 7 blows and 560 damage per round!

Oh, and also found Crimson off Judge Death at dlvl 60 in the Dragon Lair. :)

Damn those Cloning Pits were hard. The standard monsters were OK, but Yibb-Tstll was my random monster. Even in my fully buffed fully healthy state, he double-moved me breathing Nexus and Toxic waste, taking me down to about 150 HP.

Finally did manage to kill him after teleport away and rebuffing (for monks, first strike is super important, as it stuns the monster). But geez, that would have been the end of a 600 HP character!

45 minutes and an Old Castle later.. Hunger becomes to be my first character to eschew BOTH the Jacket and Boots of Shiva's Avatar :-P The Jacket would be helpful, but it's too heavy and would disrupt my balance... I could correct the problem by removing Hammerhand, but I'm not going to willingly leave any resistance holes in a Nightmare game!

Old Castle was.. really annoying. My Attract Demons mutation, in particular, called forth a Balrog that chain summoned. Also, Ungoliant was there, and *that* was a horrendously long and painful fight.

Most humorous moment of the Old Castle:

The Greater Titan summons monsters:
The Giant Headless (summoned) casts a ball of radiation!
The Greater Titan changes. (into a Basilisk)

My intuition proved correct, as my next trip down showed Mycen, who double-moved Mana Storm and breath Light on me. Again, would have been toast were not for RLight.

Fought a very difficult fight with Kenshiro, with only Beruthiel to show for it (what a silly item, there's no way anyone would go for it, with a -25 to STR DEX and CON)

Also, got moronified.

The endgame is definitely not nearly as bad as the early game for Nightmare mode. Running through the dlvl 80 uniques without too much trouble.

Not a chance against the GWoPower in the Arena. Double HP for Nightmare, plus +50% HP for Arena means it has 36000 HP. At that rate, I'd kill myself on the Auras if I tried ot melee him normally, so I had to use a Poison Needle, and it didn't work out.

Victory!

Not too many resources used, as stunning seems to work in full effect in Nightmare mode. 2 !o*Healing*, 4 ?o*Destruction*, a couple Rods (that blew up from Eat Magic). and a couple dozen ?oTeleport and !oCCW. The Serpent actually summoned a number of strong monsters... Mortgoth, Vecna, Surtur, cyberdemons, and wyrms. Someone or something also summoned the three angel uniques. In each case I would just teleport again, and then pull them apart, and then *Destruct*.

I have to say, Arioch (my Chaos patron) gets the MVP award for this game. Plentiful early Augmentations gave me the HP I needed to survive much of the early game, and Extra Legs cancelled out the speed disadvantage until I picked up Short Stubs from the vapor quest.

Nightmare mode really is about managing the early and mid-game. Diving the Vault really isn't feasible in Nightmare mode, so the best way is to skip it and farm Quartz Veins in the Tower. Accumulate a couple million gp, and then buy yourself good equipment. (Actually, with another character, I probably would have wanted 3 million or more, so I can buy stat potions.) Surviving the Tower, however, requires FA and decent AC, which is why I picked Monk.

Actually, another set of builds that might be well-suited for Nightmare mode in Android, since their clvl depends on equipment. I timed that I make about 1.3 million per hour farming. Assuming an Android spends a good 4 hours down there and then find a good 5 million worth of equipment, he should easily be up to clvl 40 or so (the construction points don't seem to correlate well with cost).

Key is having automore turned on as well as removing the disturbance option. I only let two sides breed. Rest to become full and have veins breed up next to you. Then pick a direction to mash. One does have to think a bit (which direction to mash), so its not completely automatic. But I'm about 6x faster than you! What's up? :)

Oh, and my personal record is 1,000,000gp in under 3 minutes ... I won't reveal that secret, though.

Ah, OK, I see where the difference is... I haven't been tuning my Disturbance options, so I actually have to hit the buttons multiple times. I see how to fix this.

Bastard! I've been revealing all my secrets...

Actually, for posterity:

Me: Abandoning Logrus Master quest to allow early Sting dive, Tower Quest retries, early farming Killing Fields, Wall of Stone vs. Babble

Elliott: Mutation scumming in Vapor Quest, creation scumming for mutations with Beastman, reading ?oAcq early in Ryleh.

Chris: Skimming Dragon Lair, Forest Creation vs. Babble, Tower Quest Quartz Vein farming

What else am I missing?

Hm, it seems I've only won with the following 7 classes:

Rogue, Priest, Mage, Ranger, Magic-Eater, Monk, and Forcetrainer.

If we include Entroband, I gain Warrior-Mage, High-Mage, Mindcrafter, and Ninja.

That leaves: Warrior, Paladin, Chaos-Warrior, Tourist, Imitator, Beastmaster, Sorceror, Archer, Bard, Red-Mage, Samurai, Blue-Mage, Cavalry, Berserker, Weaponsmith, and Mirror-Master.

I'm way too sloppy a player to win with Sorceror or Berserker. Paladin (through quite a few attempts) feels too much like a gimped Warrior. Beastmaster feels too much like a gimped Cavalry. I'm not sure I like the style of Blue-Mages or Imitators. I'm not sure I have the heart to try Tourist again after the death of my lvl 50 tourist. That leaves:

Warrior, Chaos-Warrior, Archer, Bard, Red-Mage, Samurai, Cavalry, Weaponsmith, and Mirror-Master.

You don't skim the dragon's lair? I learned that (indirectly) from Victor. Its rather dangerous, though. And quartz veins I learned from you. Before that, I used to take 10 hours to get to the Cloning Pits! Now it is typically 3-4 hours.

Other tricks:
[1] If you have enlightenment (spell or jewel), you can recall scum for resources. Recall down. Enlighten. Use map mode to spot what you want (careful use of pickup.prf helps). Go get stuff. This helps with stat potions, healing and *healing*, etc.
[2] Scummy version of [1] which I've only used a couple of times. Do the same, but stair scum the top of R'lyeh. For this, you need the spell as the jewel takes too long to recharge. Macro up a stair climb, enlightenment, map mode, spot items keyboard combo and go to town. I've had a mindcrafter get 30 -Rockets this way. There is a hack that items generated on top dungeon levels are generated as if you are on DL1, but this doesn't apply to vaults and a couple of other room types.
[3] Don't like a vault. Then "Quake and Take". Good for berserkers, and nature lovers. Quake destroys most monsters (if you use it enough) but won't destroy artifacts.
[4] Want a fun, but scummy game. Run a 'zerker in unusual rooms mode. Then stair scum for GCV and bubble vaults. Start out at DL1 in Angband, then move to DL20 in castle, then to antimagic (DL30? I can't remember). If you are playing Entroband, you can do the top of the Dragon's Lair. Once you are really powerful, and this should only take a few hours (unless you are learning how not to die with this game style), then move to R'lyeh for the end game power build. At DL80, you should be able to score any artifact, and even face the plain gold ring if you wish, or if you are lazy. I won an Android in 4.5 hours this way without really trying to go fast. Use the tower to trump to DL98 of angband for the finish.
[5] Passwall is addictive. You can easily negate summoners with a proper setup, for example:
XX_X
XDXX
XX_@
Say the D is Bahamut, and @ is you, of course. You are on a wall. Lure the critter into the space in front of you and it won't be able to summon.
When in danger, just back off and either rest (regen is key) or heal.

That can't be all my tricks? Well, everbody knows how to get Zantetsuken, right?

Dragon's Lair scumming is a little hard to do with Sexy characters, so I rarely do that because I'm addicted to Sexy. Usually I do better in the controlled terrain of the Tower. But my list was to attribute everyone's contributions to the game :) For this Nightmare monk, I ripped shamelessly off Elliot's ideas.

Yeah, I did notice that you tend to have a *lot* more !oRestoreMana than me. For me, I'll collect about 15 !oRestoreMana by the time I take on the Serpent (not counting maybe 2-3 that I use during the course of the game). I guess that's mostly because of [1] and [2].

I rarely, if ever, die to the Serpent, so I'm becoming more and more aggressive in the endgame, usually not bothering to clear uniques. Sufficient amounts of ?oRecharging (obtainable from town) and _o*Destruction* usually is enough to control the fight... the trick is to have more than 1 _o*Destruction*, so that when you recharge, each staff gets exactly one charge. Then you can expend them all so the Serpent doesn't gain any life back.

For some reason or other, my playtimes have been getting longer recently, usually around 18 hours now. I think previously I was able to get it down to about 12.
