[Dlvl Killing Fields] [Clvl 31] 2:00; Day 7 18:30

After N attempts that got suicided when I realized I killed Lousy/Wu Gutu/Robin Hood/etc., I finally managed to control myself well enough to not kill any of the uniques that show up.

Sting was generated with RDisenchant; that was very much appreciated. Doing the Tower showed a Quartz Vein after about 20 tries, so I popped in my Nightmare Mode farming macros, and made myself 1 million gp in the course of about 1.5 game days. Buying out 3 Black Markets showed the Gaunts of Agility +5 that I'm wearing, as well as the Robe of Permanence with RConf and the Shield of Reflection.

Dove into the Killing Fields afterwards, and bumped myself up to level 31. I even managed to kill the Maulotaur, thanks to good ranged attacks and double Fire resistance from Colluin.

I get the feeling Ukyo's intrinsic stats actually are pretty bad, since it took 3 STR boosts (past 18) to get to 18/46, and my DEX boost only took me to 18/15. That makes me not want to do Vapor Quest for mutations just yet.. (on the lookout for a !oNewLife)

Dare I try the Dragon Lair?

No dead uniques yet? Cool.

How'd you manage to clear the vault?

One of the BMs had 3 !oSpeed. With those !oSpeed and the 1 !oHealing that everyone had to start with, plus the double resist from Colluin, it was pretty easy... simply a matter of teleporting around to pick up the various small swords. (Of course, I may be more used to this since I play Sexy characters >50% of the time.)

On 8.11.2009 08:15 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
No potions of self-knowledge yet? Huh. I just got one on my current character (who picked up telepathy(!) in vapor quest, but I decided to fail it and run when she got drained all the way down to level 1. If I had remembered at the time that the rod of detection was the reward, I might have tried a little harder to stick it out. That rod is pretty darn useful for this character. Speaking of useful rewards, I'm strongly tempted to accept killing a pair of uniques in the arena, not for the ?acquisition, but for the rod of stone to mud).

Intrinsic stats are:
STR 18/90
INT 18/100
WIS 18/130
DEX 18/70
CON 18/100
CHR 18/110
Health 97/100

So, not as bad as it could be, but certainly below average.

Yeah, even when playing a bard or something I make an effort to stealthify them as much as possible. So I'm used to teleporting around, mostly unnoticed (except for damn hound packs) grabbing the swords at my leisure. Hacking through the entire vault's population to get to them makes me nervous.

Wait, I'm confused by something. According to the standings, my dead character was at ~20k turns, while you're at a measly 7k, and Roch was at 12k. However, my character died on game day 4, Roch died on day 7 and you're on day 7. How does that work? Am I working to minimize turns the wrong way? Which turns is it counting?

On 8.11.2009 16:07 dzhang wrote:
Yeah, I think the turn counter isn't working correctly.. have you informed Nick or Pav already?

For me, I think I'll avoid the Arena all together. The Rod of Stone to Mud is nice, but not so necessary for a high STR character. Buy/keep a shovel of Digging if you really need to, as a swap.

The Uniques I will kill, however, are any that show up in the Cloning Pits. I think the Clones don't actually count against your unique count, but often there's one or two that get spawned there. The Old Castle, I'm willing to fail if uniques are spawned (Glaive of Pain isn't that attractive to me, and most of the goodies are found in the Castle anyway). The other uniques I may be willing to kill are Dworkin and Stormbringer. Dworkin drops the Jewel quite frequently, and Stormbringer's just an all around good weapon.

Complete whiff on the Mimic Quest (again). I remember getting an ?oArtifactCreation from there once before, but the best my last 10 characters has found from there is an armor of elvenkind.

Er.. I don't actually kill everyone in the Vault quest, even with Sexy characters! I mean using LoS to your best advantage (there are a few pillars in there), and using ?oPhaseDoor, and also quaffing !oCCW like mad (you need to bring at least 30 with you when you go in). A !oCuring also helps, but isn't strictly necessary for me.

Elliot, you don't carry 5 or 6 !oRestoreLife with you when you do the Vapor Quest? I usually jump in at clvl 31 or 32, and quaff when when I get drained to 26 or so.

Well! I just got myself Thranduil Jr. from the Armory in Telmora. After running to Angband and walking back, I decide to check all the 2/3/7 shops again, and saw a Hard Leather Cap of Seeing for sale at the Armory for 22k. I thought to myself, "Huh, aren't those usually a lot cheaper? Like 5k-ish? I examined, and was ecstatic to find it with Telepathy!"

So, I dove into the Dragon Lair, thinking I should be able to take Great Bile Wyrms, if not some of the other high elemental wyrms. Well, I fought a Ancient Red with double resistance and had only 200 HP by the time I won. That was humbling. I did this a few more times, skimming the top of the Dragon Lair and taking down Ancient *** Dragons, but then realized this was taking me rather long to heal back up.

Items to show for killing dragons for a day: 1 Rod of Perception (It's actually quite useful), and Boots of Levitation (with RPois).

Currently at 7 !oSpeed and 7 !oHealing. Still a bit skimpy for Cloning Pits, given that my damage output is only about 250 / round, and my AC is only 85. I'd like 10 of each before attempting it.

Wow, so I decided to go for the Vapor Quest, and live with low intrinsic stats. That got me quite a grab bag of mutations.

Good ones:
Berserk Self
Panic Hit
Telepathy
Teleport at Will
Extra Resilience (+4 CON)

Bad ones that I could live with:
Albino (-4 CON)
Puny (-4 STR)
Chaos Patron[Hionhurn] (stat swapping would be disastrous...)
Occasionally drop things

Unacceptable one:
Vulnerable to Elements

Right, off to Zul I go.

Well, that was a bummer. Exposed to Elements was the absolute last mutation to go, so I burned through 200,000 gold and wasted 3 game days, with absolutely no net change. Sigh, that was like a 1 in 40 probability. Oh well.

On 9.11.2009 01:49 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Oh, I don't hit the Vapor Quest nearly as hard as you do. I'm willing to get hit by it a few times (especially with doubled rpoison and rNexus. Thanks for that, btw.) but I don't seriously scum for it. I brought in 2 !restorelife. Used one after a couple hits took me down to 24-25, and then when a single chaos breath took me all the way down to level 1 (must have been amazingly unlucky or something. don't recall that bad an xp drain ever before), I decided discretion was the better part of valor. I still had the 1 potion left, but didn't want to drink it, scum some more and then get splattered by something stupid on the way out because I was level 1.

Funny you mentioned tough dragons. I'd just been thinking to myself that the dragons I've run into have felt relatively tough. I barely dented the AMHD I ran into at 26 and I've learned not to take on even the regular ancients if I'm below about half health. Did they get like a 50% hp buff or something?

Elliott, I think the XP drain takes off a percentage of your Max Exp, rather than your current Exp. That's why you can get drained from lvl 22 to lvl 1 in one breath, if your max level is like 32.

Most mysterious indeed, about the dragons. Maybe I'll try to probe them.

Ah, good point re: exp drains. Perhaps I was indeed already drained and in my excitement over the telepathy mutation I missed it.

I'm going to disagree with you on the value of rods of stone to mud, especially for a sexy character. For example, right now my new character is fresh off a fight with a unicorn (hate the damn things and they seem to be all over the place) which has drained the charges from all my wands.

I'm nearly at full health, but half a screen away I see a Fallen Angel coming. I would REALLY like to quickly dig an anti-summoning tunnel in which to fight it. It won't have LoS for a while, but I'm less than confident I can dig one with my axe in time. If I had 2 or more rods of stone to mud, it would be a non-issue. Making things worse, something destroyed my ring of rNether a level or so ago, so I might just run.

[Dlvl Cloning Pits] [Clvl 34] 4:00; Day 13 5:30

Well, I got another !oHealing from the BM, bringing my total to 8 !oHealing and 13 !oSpeed, so I decided to go for the Cloning Pits after buying a _oCuring and a !oCuring. First teleport, Hallucination right away from Eldritch Horror! Doh. Teleport, landed in the bottom-left corner where the Elvish waybread were. Used staff, and saw an AMHD.

Oh boy.

Activate Colluin, use _oSpeed, fight AMHD until 2 stars, it starts fleeing (I'm at about 300 HP). Start quaffing !oCCW, and get surrounded by reptiles (none too dangerous though). Kill them off, and then got surrounded by DE Warlocks. Fortunately, my Shield of Reflection neutralizes their most powerful trick, so I clear them out, and then a Master Lich shows up and drains my Staves. Kill it, kill the AMHD that wandered back, kill the Bokrugs (after another !oHealing), kill the Its.

Going through the loot for these guys showed Anarion and Celegorm! Fairly pleased with the take, I try to put on Celegorm, and failed. Doh! Cursed. I always forget to bring ?oRemoveCurse with me. Oh well. Wait, what's this? Hurin! Nice, infinite Speed now! (Well, not really. You know what I mean.)

Go through and kill the Jurts, eating several Logrus invocations and gaining 2 mutations (Puny and Extra Resilience). One of them escaped, and I decided not to worry about him for now. Shot down most of the melee monster.. and then the last Jurt vaporizes my crossbow bolts! >_< Down to 10, I shoot Jurt down. The rest of the fight was pretty easy. Father Dagons and Gachapins and Queen Ants summoned a fair bit, but I had things under control with Activations for Speed and Resistance. The last tough monster was a Stone Dragon, which I had to spend 2 !oHealing for (because I was dumb and let the Giant Red Ants fry all my ?oTeleport).

Going through the remaining loot, I find even more goodness: Hammerhand and Calris. Finish the quest, and head to Zul, hoping to be able to keep Resilience. No such luck, Resilience went before Puny, so I wasted yet another game day and 10,000 gp.

Still though, this character is doing pretty well, and I'm proud to announce that I'm still at 0 uniques killed.

Hrm. I just realized that Sting was my only source of RDisenchant. Normally, this means Bull Gates has to die. But with my so-far-perfect record, I'm reluctant to do that quest.

IMO, Hurin is one of the more underappreciated weapons in Heng because its brands are meh and its got mediocre damage dice anyway, but +3 attacks, +3 CON and a killer activation are an extremely useful combo.

How much of your offense is the crossbow? I find that my melee offense is still only a little better than the damage I do with the crossbow. Are rings of extra shots in the game?

Hurin is one of my favorite mid-game weapons. It does tend to get replaced by Aglarang and/or Slayer though.

Yep, I guess I forgot to mention that I wore my Ring of Extra Shots as a swap for the Cloning Pits. With that, my ranged damage was on a par with my melee damage. Against the summoners, of course I'd want to close in and do melee, but against the melees, the Xbow was pretty good (at least until Jurt fried all my bolts).

I'm starting to reach the point where my melee damage is starting to outstrip ranged damage. However, ranged is still a good tactical alternative in some cases because of my low AC. (Especially now that I'm starting to dual Wield).

Almost got fried by Ahtu in the Dragon Lair, so it's back to Angband to practice Dual Wielding for me. Right now, Hurin has a 33% chance of hitting AC 100, and 5% chance of hitting AC 150 >_<.

Well, I'm finally up to 51% chance to hit AC 100, and 26% chance to hit AC 150 with Hurin. That'll do for now. (BTW, it seems that Heroism applies to full effect on both weapons, unlike gear-based bonuses).

Not too much of note right now. ~500 damage/round, +4 speed, missing Dark, Sound, and Chaos. Shortage of healing (7 !oHealing, 2 !o*Healing* and 1 !oLife).

First speed artifact other than Shiva's Boots (Star off a Great Ice Wyrm) and first near death experience (down to 50 HP from Lord of Chaos, escaped with ?oTeleportLevel). The elemental wyrms seem tougher too.. with 500 damage per round and double-resistance, I should be slicing right through them, but more often than not it's a coin toss, depending on if they breath on me twice early on (1 Ice, 2 Storm so far, and 0/3 on my attempts at Hell).

96 uniques sighted so far, 0 killed. :)

Went ahead and tried the Old Castle Quest. Found Cambeleg and Caspanion and a Rod of Speed. Among the random monsters/summons were the Icky Queen and Charon, Boatman of the Styx, so I had to abandon the quest.

Exploring the Dragon Lair is getting painful. I have to be very careful to fight only when the Lodoss dragons aren't anywhere near, and often fighting a strong dragon (GWoChaos, etc) means that I need to consume valuable !oHealing resources. Lack of RSound is also annoying because that means my stash of !oHealing are not protected against shattering.
