I'm playing a monk again to test out the new retaliation ability, but that only works when fighting bare handed. Still, it is so rare that a monk finds some usable nunchaku. Indeed, these would not exceed my fists were it not for the Tonberry combat bonus, and the gap there is quickly closing.

Nature's Gifts and Spiritual Enlightenment have both shown up before 800', angering me greatly as those are my two usual monk realms. Well, its not like the Book of the Unicorn is any good. In fact, it gets my vote for biggest letdown ever! Well, it has Perception (saves using staves or scrolls) and Recall. Eventually, Warding True but not until CL48. No, Life is all about the Healing spell and perhaps Restoration as well.

Well, I managed to survive to L25 without a FA insta-death. Your odds of getting a source of FA at this stage of the game are slim to none (unless you turn on the quest engine) so its nice to be able to cover this requisite via attrition. A very good call on Life rather than Nature! Sure, sure, I would have all my books already had I chosen Nature and I still have yet to find any Life books. But with my innate 18/70 wisdom I would never be able to cast Herbal Healing whereas even with an 18 wisdom I can max out the life Healing spell, and I'm sure to do better than that. Perhaps as high as 18/150 once I score the Jewel and Amber. Oh, and even Gogo so maybe my 18/60 base (race/class/personality) could be largely overcome. Its just that 18/*** is completely undoable, I think, given the Monk equipment restrictions.

So why keep this life? Well, 18/100 Str, 18/130 Dex and 18/120 Con. Also 104% life rating. I think Dex is actually more important for this build as that last attack can be hard to achieve otherwise.

Now, I was not expecting an upgrade to my awesome boots from the pits, but you never know (I'm about 1 for my last 20 with Shiva's). Still, I had to try ... And I did pick up Thingol with +3 dex, a smattering of resists, the uber rare hold life and even a recharging activation. But this necessitates a ring of lightning, and with poison on my other finger, that leaves me levitationless, and, alas, unable to pursue my dragon dreams any further. At least for the time being ... Perhaps I should swap back until Frakir shows up? Wearing armor brings my AC down below 100 so I'd rather do without if possible ...

I found Frakir nearly instantly after the Cloning Pits, so I continue to slaughter dragons. Next up on my list is the Palantir, which can be a bit rare ... Though native to L60, it is rarity 50. In the meantime, I'll swap out Hammerhand for Telepathy.

As usual, resistances are the issue with the Monk. I don't think that the retaliation ability is too OP as it still takes like 40 rounds to kill a big dragon (Hell or Venom) though last time I measured my damage output was only 340 or so. Probably, they drop more quickly now :)

Also coming into form is the Healing spell with a fail rate under 20%.

And yes, I'll wait for the Palantir before tackling the Old Castle. While I really miss the old days of Shiva's boots and jacket, I think the game is much more balanced without both being gimmes. Still, could you imagine if I actually got the jacket? Wow!! Since that is highly unlikely, I at least want a Palantir replacement ... but it'll probably just generate with darkness like all my recent phial replacements.
