OK, with regard to the life cursing spells, I simply goosed the saving throw to make these spells more useful. For example, Cause Light Wounds does less damage then Magic Missile, costs 3x as much, and fails around 80% of the time. I feel that is a bit excessive, so I goosed the monster saving throws quite a bit. Now it is about 5x less powerful than a magic missile, but still slightly useful. We'll see about Cause Medium/Critical Wounds as they become available.

Still, I must fail the Sewer even after killing 1100 undead masses. I'm simply too weak!

The gameplan is Ares for Combat boosts as well as +20 AC. Untouchable for another +30 AC. And Ultimate Resistance for another +100 AC. Then, I dare the Serpent to touch this!!!!

OK, The Sewer was doable with 77 AC and some boldness. I risked permanent stat drain and triumphed! Now, I am the proud owner of an average Feanorian Lamp which was hardly worth the risk! I think the Orc Camp will need to wait ...

This is suicidal! Even with my AC over 100, my lack of hp, detection, resistance, and even SI is proving most troublesome! Packs of Light and Dark Hounds bring forth perma-blindness, so one hopes nothing else is nearby. Heck, even the hounds can nibble me to death! I ran into It and that guy spanked me down to 60hp before finally robbing me. And It is not really known for combat prowess!

So, I'm trying even more AC ... at some point, I need to be able to stand and fight! Well, this Wild Mace sometimes helps out :D

Hm. Thinking of Life spells is really hard, because Life is only good at one thing: healing. Anything else and it treads on the toes of other realms --- evil-bashing is Crusade, detection is Sorcery, and tree-hugging is Nature. I suppose there's already a lot of crossover, but making even more strikes me as poor design. (By the same token, removing the "Cause Wounds" series is a plus in my view since damage spells belong to so many other realms already.) It's easy to devise good-themed summon spells (Summon Pegasus, Summon Unicorns --- Crusade already has Crusade and Summon Angel); but I don't think they're that interesting. It's also not too hard to devise new buffs, the most eligible of which would be Protection from Undead; but the game already has a million and one buffs and a lot of them already overlap. I don't much like pet-related stuff (and I always play without pets), but a more practical replacement for Day of the Dove might be something like this:

Congregate (Book 3): Teleport all your pets as close to you as possible. Heal each one by ((N% of its max health) + (Nd8)), where N is your level. If N=50, haste them.

The only idea I had that I really like is this:

Fasting (Book 2): You become weak with hunger. Restore your INT and WIS. If you're already weak with hunger, you can't cast it.

This is cool because Restoration only comes in Book 4, and a dungeon-use spell stat restorer could come in handy. Also, sometimes you can get gorged when fighting the Serpent, although I don't know if that ever happens to Life casters.

If monsters had the power to do more with corpses, I'd recommend a spell that "buries" (destroys) all corpses, but reanimation isn't a real threat currently.

I don't see a way for Life casters to cure hallucination. Shouldn't Life be able to cure anything? Perhaps a very low-level "Curing" spell in Book 3 that acts like the potion --- you can't cast spells when blind or confused, but a spell that clears stun/cuts/poison/hallucination in one shot might be useful... (?)

OK, I've got one more. It's a buff, but a unique one, and it's not a subset of Ultimate Resistance, which is nice.

Transcendence: Damage is dealt to your mana total instead of your HP total as long as you have mana.

So, my pitch:

[1] Cause Light Wounds -> Protection from Undead [Book 1]
[2] Cause Medium Wounds -> Fasting [Book 2]
[3] Day of the Dove -> Congregate [Book 3]
[4] Cause Critical Wounds -> Curing [Book 3]
[5] Alter Reality -> Trascendence [Book 3]

On 12.4.2012 17:44 chris wrote:
Good thoughts ...

How about
[1] Cause Light Wounds -> Regeneration. I really like Protection from Undead too but if regeneration belongs anywhere, I think it is with Life. Crusade already has Protection from Evil which includes undead.

[2] Cause Medium Wounds -> Fasting. But not instantaneous. Indeed, with Satisfy Hunger that simply creates a 2 turn restoration. Instead, the player gains Fasting status which remains until they eat or drink. Each turn there is a chance of restoring a random stat, the odds being proportional to how hungry you are.

[3] Day of the Dove -> Sustaining. This grants temporary sustain and hold life. Perhaps some sort of level check for how many sustains you get and perhaps they are randomly chosen (Like the way the Harden to the Elements mutation works).

[4] Cause Critical Wounds -> ?? I'm not sure about Curing. Yes it belongs here in life, but it also consolidates several other life spells and I feel there is already a problem with the early life spells quickly becoming useless/replaced by better versions. Perhaps Cure Mutation instead? For Vanilla Townies, this would be huge!!

[5] Alter Reality -> Transcendence. Nice. Will this be too powerful?

On 12.4.2012 19:22 dzhang wrote:
I think Transcendence is fine. As a life mage, you can heal HP more easily than you can restore SP anyway, so it's not overpowered.

Good thoughts!

On 13.4.2012 14:30 chris wrote:
>I bet it's an ability of the Wild weapon.
Yes, and a rare one at that. With the wild weapon, you get great buffs, but they only last for an action or two. Also, they wipe out niceties like haste and double resistance, so if you access to these talents thru normal means, then a Wild weapon is less than ideal. But if you are a noob like myself with only Blessing as a buff, then it is a nice weapon!

[CL27:DL30] 02:32
OK, back to playing after a few hours coding.

I really like Regeneration and it is one of the more useful spells for the early game. It combos nicely with my Force weapon!

For Fasting, I made it reduce your food status by 50% to give you a head start, but you can not cast the spell while you are Fasting. I suppose you could quaff a !CLW to break the fast, and then recast, but I am actually OK with this ... I'd rather not reduce players to cast Fasting and then Rest for 9999 turns, though that is possible as well. You won't have a shot at any sort of restoration until you are at least "Hungry".

For Sustaining, it works like Harden to the Elements. You get sustains randomly and the number you get depends on your level. Ultimate Resistance no longer sustains your stats or holds your life.

For Cure Mutation you get a chance of preferentially removing a bad mutation.

For Transcendence, I'm considering a hp/sp conversion factor. The spell is short duration but you will be out of mana *fast* as things currently stand. Still, the spell does allow you to avoid insta-death, so it might be OK as is.

Thanks for the ideas!

I was heading down to face Azog when The Variant Maintainer coughed up something useful for a change ... Probably, this was just an occurrence of some hard to reproduce bug ;)

Sadly, I need two hands or a tad more dex for my 3rd and final attack, but I happened to have recently sold a (thought to be) useless ring of dex which I happily repurchased. So now I have 5 attacks, +6 base speed, FA, SI and AC141. But not resist base ... Ah, the joys of the early game :D

Another darkness lamp, making 6 out of my last 7 phial replacements useless. I had to check the odds in wizard mode to confirm that they generate 1 in 10, and indeed they do (observed 94 out of 1000), so I must just be unlucky :(

On the positive side, Celegorm and Thalkettoth rocket me to a staggering 170 AC. I even give up my +4 speed armor since Thalkettoth nets me my final attack. Still no poison resistance, which has me concerned ...

A 154AC is enough for Grendel, but not for a Biclops or a Troll King . At least not enough for a comfortable kill, even with a (16% fail) healing spell on the ready (I think the Biclops got lucky, but the Troll King was definitely a world of hurt). But after finding some Granite Walls I've my healing is down to 10% fail. I should have probably picked Int or even Con for my L30 boost, but I went with Str hoping to lock in my final attack without requiring a ring of Dex. Oh, yeah, poison resist courtesy of It dropping Caspanion supplants my high AC Thalkettoth kit.

With 5 -Dragon'sFrost, Smaug was a cinch, though he did require 3 healing spells. Ticked off, he seemed to breath every time!

Some more stat potions and I might try the Lair with the needle. High AC and healing is a good combo for this.

I ran into some Greater Wall Monsters in The Mountain. Normally, these critters necessitate instant fleeing, but in the mountain, I could fight them 1v1 since mountains block passwall (as well as stone to mud). Still, they are fast and tough and easily chew thru my AC. After about 500 healing spells, I managed to kill 800 of them netting about 600,000xp. Now, I really need to find some darn stat potions!! And I never got near the vault they came out of ... That would have required some sterilization.

Thus begins the loooong battle with !NewLife. So far, con has gone 18/70->18/80->18/80. Life Rating is only 90% ...

In the meantime, I've moved to the lair where I can actually melee Ice Wyrms and Storm Wyrms to death. This is surprising since my accuracy is only 30% or so vs AC175, but my AC is quite nice and my healing is prodigious.

[CL35:Cloning Pits = Frodo] 08:42
For me, 8.5 hours for the pits is about average, I guess. I can do it faster if I take more early risks or if I am born with average stats, rather than the colossal suckage I've been experiencing. Another New Life grants 18/90 Con, so that's the best I can do it seems. Otherwise, this life is not too bad so I'll just make do. Once I have 15 !NewLives (Clairvoyance, please!) I will reconsider.

In near total embarrassment, the Pits were tough. Let's begin with everything awake thanks to Ares "aggravation", and we'll lead off with a Death Beast in the Bokrug corner. So, sell out to kill, and it neglected to drain charges from my staves which would have royally sucked. But, my stats and life were *devastated* and I had no way to repair quickly. Jurts were tough kills as were Its ... when you only do about 150 damage per round! But I got going, cleared my corner and began a long fast for restoration. Weak with hunger and passing out, I broke my fast and restarted. That's one useful spell :)

After that, I had to fight Dagons all at once, Byakees, Gachapins, et. al. It was a long quest of attrition, but I managed.

The only good news was a Grendel clone carrying a +6 ring of speed, so I think I will try the needle again. Last time I only had 380hp, no way to resist acid and nearly died trying to get cute poking hell wyrms. I should do better this time ...

For L40, my choices are Weapon Versatility or Demonic Grasp. The former is my first choice, but the latter I have yet to try. I think I will do Demonic Grasp after all. A 400hp rocket is the equivalent of about 700hp melee damage, and I am extremely unlikely to ever do that much damage! Plus, Clairvoyance should allow some massive resource accumulation in the end game.

In the meantime, I needle all I see, hoping for some sort of miracle drop. But the experience is just as good ...

Superb stealth? WTF?! That is not like Ares at all ...

Well, the 230AC certainly is a profound demonstration of combat prowess, so we'll let the stealth issue slide for now.

I'll hold at the top of the lair for my L40 talent, and then I will resume quests in Angband. I really wish I could score a Blessings of the Grail, and its not like 4th books have been rare thus far. Still, I doubt this can happen for me, so I'll need a decent melee weapon to tide me over.

[CL39:DL60] 11:22
OK, I'll put the needle down at last. PDSM is fantastically awesome, but Fear and Blindness resistance are still lacking, and surprisingly mandatory. Blindness particularly as I am typically blinded 5 times or so in a normal wyrm battle, and this requires !CCW to recover so that I can heal. Fear happens every time as well, but a !Heroism blocks it. So I give up Hammerhand for Thranduil, and this knocked me down to the low 400's in hp. Having nearly died to a blindness breath double move, I quaffed one of my 2 !NewLives in desperation. This biffed my life rating a bit, but gave me the beloved 18/130 con at last! Int is 18/80, but Str and Dex are also above normal, so I think I am finally content!

As to finding rings of extra attacks +3, having a character with Call Sunlight/Clairvoyance-type spells or the blessed Jewel really speeds that up!

Speaking of UNIQUE2, I just had another evil thought. You can't Pokeball capture the Zombified Serpent of Chaos, but you can Kiss to befriend Uniques. Unfortunately, the ZSoC being native to DL 127, that means you only have a 2% chance to befriend him every round, even with 18/220 CHA. But still, that sounds like a challenge to me! Beastmaster time!

I've found 3 Necronomicons, 2 Spiritual Enlightenments, 1 Dire Ire, 1 Wrath of God. But Blessings has been elusive, so I'm taking a risk and going down to get one myself since monsters have proven reluctant to bring a copy to me.

While down here, I made short work of Biketal who neglected to Dispel Magic, but did hit me with an Anti-magic that lasted for 6 or 7 actions. I didn't think they could last that long, so I'm guessing he got me with a second one before the first one ran out. Also, I used Warding True to annihilate Wahha-man the Golden. Still, it was scary whenever he broke a rune and pummeled me with those golden fists of his. I really need the extra +100AC from Ultimate Resistance it seems, but I'm starting to realize I will need more Intelligence for that spell. I got the book after nearly 1.5 hours at appropriate depth. I also wasted nearly an hour on a Runesword before deciding it wasn't worth the effort. With patience, you can get an awesome weapon but it takes a long time.

But, the joke is on me. As a demigod, I am only about 40% to the beloved Ultimate Resistance which, being a L49 spell, will require at least 20 Mxp. Wow, this is going to take some time! So, I really wanted to brag about my 364AC but since it is going to take another 15 hours to get there, I'll just have to taunt my meager 264AC. Oh well ... Maybe I shouldn't have given up on the Runesword after all?
