Second try on Priest. Considering how quickly Priests get the Healing spell, I'm really curious why there aren't more Priests on the ladder. Luck with items hasn't been too good so far, other than the Dagger reward from committing an evil act.. Level is kinda high because I farmed Undead masses for a bit in the Sewer quest. Life/Chaos is a good combo--Magic Missile for 7D4 for 1 SP is a great way to kill opponents by attrition, but the lack of Phase Door Spell is a bit annoying.

Finally the Temple offered a Whip of Westernesse for sale (after 4 days of pure waiting and teleporting around to different towns checking all the shops!), so I could continue. Made short work of the Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner, and he dropped Thengel. Not great, but sure beats nothing.

Healing is costing me 16 SP to cast at Expert, which is pretty nice, but the 30% fail leaves something to be desired.

Found a VERY out of depth Armageddon Tome! Too bad it doesn't have any useful spells for me at the moment, but still. Endgame should be a lot easier if I survive until then.

Healing is still at 20% fail, while I start doing stat-gain. Is it just me, or is stat-gain much more annoying in Heng than in most other variants? Haven't managed to find a single useful stat potion yet (but have gotten 2 Intelligence O_o).

I personally *love* Beam of Gravity. It tends to slow down monsters, so prep 'em with a couple of beams before melee.

You are correct: Hengband stat potions are much rarer than in other variants. I suppose the rational is that with a stat boost every other level, you should need less stat potions. Probably true, but then it makes recovering from a nexus or poison stat scramble rather difficult. Oh, and I would not recommend casting the Polymorph Self spell for similar reasons, unless you like that sort of thing ;-)

Just cleared out a large vault, and got a bunch of worthless artifacts, most of which have been sold. Judge Mortis almost did me in.

I've been playing with it, but Beam of Gravity has been kind of annoying for me. It disperses the enemies all around, and then there's also the failure penalties for Chaos.. Because of that, I got punified, and also the Wraithform. Fortunately Zul removed the puny and not the Wraith.

And lol, Polymorph Self was one of the big reasons I took Chaos! I want my +3 Speed, +4 STR, +4 INT/WIS, White Aura, etc mutations!

Of the drops, one was the Wizardstaff of Gandalf... but I can't use it because it doesn't have FA! I mean, I could swap in =oFA for the =oProt and Armor of Resistance with RPois and RChaos, but then my AC drops all the way down to 85 from 139.

Ok, the quirks in this character's life is starting to be upsetting. Complete lack of ANY of the random stat-ups being WIS, was kinda annoying. Not finding FA and being stuck for 5 game days wandering around until I found the Whip of Westernesse, a bit more annoying. Now, at clvl 36, still no speed and not even a source of hasting >_<

Sigh...

Though, being able to Heal 300 HP for 11 SP at 0% fail is awfully nice--managed to take out the Maulotaur with repeated shoot-and-scoot, despite him being exactly 3 times as fast as me. ^^

Made substantial progress. Reading the ?oAcquirement on Angband Lvl 35ish gave me a totally awesome katana... Anubis! It's not very good for every day use, but it's great for 1) killing uniques, and 2) winning Arena fights. Thanks to it's anti-teleport, and my 0% fail Heal, I was able to beat both the Greater Titan and the Greater Balrog in the Arena at 0 base speed, with no source of haste!! Basically I'd shoot arrows at them, until they got close, and then Beam of Gravity them away. If they did some type of ball or breath attack, I'd heal up. Both were pretty low-risk.

Managed to find BoS(+7) in the Cloning Pits, and with 0 base speed otherwise, I decided I should use that rather than Shiva. A little while later, found Amber, as well as two other totally awesome katanas, Aglarang and Zantesuken! Unfortunately, they're not too useful for this character. Did also defeat the Stormbringer, and it's pretty good. Cleared Old Castle with Stormbringer pretty easily (BTW, have I mentioned that Wizardstaff of Gandalf sucks lately!? Force attack for 9SP, whereas I could cast a 300HP heal for 11SP! That has to be the stupidest weapon design ever. I lug it around these days for *ID*).

Gloves and Cloaks have been surprisingly crappy--nothing better than the Agility ones I found in the BM for the former, and the latter was only a single Stealth point upgrade from the Orc Camp quest (which actually is useless since I aggravate).

Things are looking quite good now, though I would like some other source of RPoison so I can swap for a RoSpeed.

Wasn't really ready for Ymir, but got cocky when I found Brand's Crossbow off Layzark. Ymir summoned Dio Brando, Vlad Dracula, Bleys, Atlas, Witch-King of Angmar, and some other ones (not all at the same time).

I Descructed them away repeated, but still my CON was getting dropped without any way of restoring. Finally I realized that Destructing also teleports him a short distance. So I kept Destructing, and thus manuevered Ymir into the middle of a pile of lava. From there, he could only summon Efreeti on me, and I made short work of him, with Stormbringer and Resist Cold spell.

He kindly dropped Blessings of the Grail for me--True Healing at 2% Fail right now!! One more level, and then BAM! Invincible Priest ^^

WOW!

I finally managed to beat the Metal Babble in the Arena again!! (the first time still being something of a mystery to me, since it was with a Tourist, and no other characters were able to even come close (i.e. do any of the 6 HP of damage).

After bumming around Angband 80 for a while (mainly offing uniques and looking for vaults) the =oExtraShots was discovered in a Greater Vault. I took that to be Wey's sign from his God that he was ready for the Arena.

For posterity's sake, here were his equipment during the epic battle:

Katana of Anubis
Shield Thorin
Bow of Belthronding
Ring of Extra Shots
Ring of Speed (+9)
Amulet of Carlammas
Palantir of Westernesse
Robe of Incanus
Cloak of Bat (+5)
Crown of Amber
Guants of Agility (+5)
Boots of Speed (+7)

In summary: 900 HP, 350 SP, 24+10 Speed, 3 Shots per round, 9 Attacks per round, Healing for about 350HP for 11 SP, True Healing for 28 SP, Ultimate Resistance for 67 SP.

(Note, this is by far not "normal" equipment, with the glaring holes in RPoison, RNether, and RNexus.. and even though I have Ultimate Resistance, I'm always paranoid about Insta-Death with Dispel Magic + Drolem breath)

Went it, cast Ultimate Resistance, and then proceeded to exchange bolts with the Babble. Reflection helped substantially with the Mana Bolts. I'd cast Healing when my HP was between 350 and 500, and True Healing only if it was lower than 350. After about 3 hits with arrows, he blinked right next to me, and Anubis saw action and even managed to hit once! Unfortunately it seemed to do 0 damage. He blinked again, and I finished the fight with more arrows.

Got the Scroll, and spent maybe another 30 minutes continually Altering Reality on Angband 87 looking for a Mace of Disruption. Finally decided to just screw it and Artifact one of the Great Hammers (+10, +10).

Well... it could be better... like it could have Activate for restore mana, or it could be (+25,+25) ish..

LOL, who am I kidding!? +2 Attacks and Drain Life and Slay Evil!!

Next turn, I was down to 10 HP! Forgot those stupid Lockes had Psycho Spear, and a whole bunch of them decided to throw simultaneously. Instincts kicked in and I hit my panic button (0% fail Destruction spell), instead of taking a screen dump or doing a True Heal.

Clear out some of the wandering Angels, and *Destruct* the rest when I was sure I 1) couldn't take them all, and 2) the Unicorn wasn't in the blast radius (ESP is good for that). I start walking back, and lure out the Unicorn yet a third time, and he summons Uriel on me.. *sigh*, teleport out again, lure out Uriel this time, kill him with a little effort, and head to the Unicorn again. Summons Combat Echizen and Noden this time >_< Teleport out, Nodens followed me and did some big breath attack on me. I *Destruct* him away, and Lure out Combat Echizen. A frustrating 20 minutes later, I finally kill him with Mana Storms, when he Blinked instead of Healing or teleporting.

Head back, find the Unicorn AGAIN, and he summons some lesser monsters this time. I was thinking, "Ah, good, we're finally making progress," and launch another Mana Storm at him, killing some of the weak monsters. Next turn, he summons Raphael and more high Angels >_<

Manage to lure Raphael away and assassinate him, but by this point there were way too many Dragons and Angels wandering around, so I tactically *Destruct* them away and in the process ruin all the Glyphs I had previously set up.

Finally deciding maybe I should try meleeing him instead of Mana Storming. And his first flurry brought me down from full HP to 150, and also reduced all my stats by about 4. >_< At this point, I gave up. I'll need a lot more speed, it seems, before I have a chance against the damn "q."

Net effect is speed down by 2 (to 20+10), but increasing damage output by about 25%, improving Fighting to Amber[10] from Amber[7], and also improving Stealth from "Very Good" to "Superb"

Again almost bit it due to a stupid mistake. Was fighting Shuma-Gorath in a vault, and he summoned the unique Q, Oremorj the Cyberdemon Lord, Lungorthin the White Balrog, Tulzscha the Green Flame, and some others. I moved myself out of LoS of most monsters and took down most of the uniques summoned without too much difficulty. As I move back in, my SP was low, but my HP was full. Shuma-Gorath summoned high Dragons and a couple high demons. I decided I should teleport out then, and did. What I failed to notice was that he followed. So when I instintively hit the rest macro, next turn he double-moved and did Dispel-Magic followed up by Hand of Doom, and I was was something like 200 HP. Eep! Full heal, and then several teleports later (him following me each time), he landed on the opposite side of a wall of a lesser demon pit. I rested up, and took him down.

The highest unique left now, other than Noden and the Unicorn, is Mycen the Gold Dragon! Maybe I'll just go for Oberon now, but Nodens is pretty deadly. I really should find a way to kill him first.

On 14.8.2005 09:30 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:

Took down Oberon with a little trouble, using up 2 !oRestoreMana and having 2 more being shattered. Eventually I had to cover the level with Glyphs in order to prevent him from teleporting around endlessly. He didn't summon anything too nasty... once 2 Cyberdemons and once a group of dragons, the highest being only a Sky Drake. He dropped a whole bunch of artifacts, none of them really useful.

Went down the stairs and tried fighting the Serpent, but it's not looking likely at this point. He's dishing out way too much damage, and I'm not doing enough damage in between True Healings to counter his regen. With use of 1 !oRestoreMana I managed to take him down a star, but he was fully regened when I teleport out, healed up, and then teleported back. I think 20+10 speed is just too low to kill him or something.

The other possible way.. nuking with Mana Storms, will require a much bigger stock of !oRestoreMana than I currently have, as it costs 47 SP right now (at Skilled) for 500 damage, but the kicker is a 26% fail rate. Even if I do somehow manage to empty out my mana by storming him, that's only about 2600 expected damage (slightly less than a full star). So, I'd need at least a good 10 or 15 !oRestoreMana for that.

I keep getting the feeling that my kit can be improved though..

WINNER!

Ok, despite the previous post, I decided I'd continue whacking at the Serpent some more, because scumming vaults for a better RoSpeed seemed really boring. He summoned a few uniques I kinda forgot about... Great Cthulu, Null, Vecna, and the Greater Hell-Beast (^^). I Destructed all of those away, and finally realized that my problem was that I wasn't fighitng at the right place. So, I scooched on over to the vault entrance and pitched the fight there. A little later, I realized it would be even better if I shifted the fight into one of the nooks and cranies where I was covered on 7 sides by permawall, but the fight had gone well enough that I figured I wasn't going to start over.

Whew, winner with 20+10 speed! Is that a new record? ^^ Hm, I guess a Berzerker with a ton of Healing potions might be able to do slightly better, but with all of the Serpents spell, double-moves can be deadly.

I always True Healed when HP < 550. With him so much faster than me, the SP conservation strategy doesn't work. I also thought briefly about swapping in the Charmed Pendant for 1 free RestoreMana, but in the end decided against it... the chances of him summoning a Dark Elven Shade and insta-killing me were too great.

Anyway, I do want to head to the bottom of Hell, and possibly kill a zombified Serpent, but I'm really going to look for a better Speed Ring first now!

Well, I ascended to the peaks of Heaven and descended to the bottom of Hell, and I can tell you there were Starbucks in both places. ^^ Managed to find a slightly better Speed Ring, but I really should be getting something on around 14 or 15.

Hm... 2 questions for people reading this:

1) What does the Activation on Scythe of Slicing "Bloody Moon" do? I activated it, but didn't notice anything. and

2) Why does it say "True Winner" on this guy, rather than just "Winner" which SingedDream has?

[1] Activating the Scythe will change its slays/abilities. *Identify* it before and after activating it, and you will see what I mean.

[2] Do you mean True Champion vs. Champion in the Arena? A Champion simply (!) beat the GWoP while a True Champion beat the babble. I don't see your character as a "winner" yet. For that, you need to retire and take a dump during the retire process. Then your character will show up with winner status on oook. Oh, and I had a Vampire Rogue die looking for a Starbucks in Hell ... He shows up on the ladder as a loser, even though I personally count him as one of my winners ...

HTH.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the tips. Wow, a warrior with that weapon would totally rule; I'd even say that'd be the best warrior weapon, granted you're patient enough to change zokusei enough time to get all the awesome attributes.

And wrt [2], no I mean the "winner" status it says on the screen (see the last two screenshots). It says "TrueWinner." Hm, maybe it does have to do with the Babble victory though.

Hm, at the risk of being branded a loser myself by Oook.cz, I think I'll try to experience up some more.. it's rather annoying how bad certain parts of my kit are. But also multi-tasking to start up Rei Hino... which is a perfect way to die, because I'm sure to get my macros confused.

Well I be darned. I totally missed that on your screen shot ... I guess I've never truely won Hengband ;-)

Best read of the Source is that yes, you need to be both an Arena winner and a Serpent Killer to be a *TRUEWINNER*.

Well, I tried to be cute and capture one of the Zombified Serpent of Chaos after I brought it down to 1 star, and failed to like 10 times (consuming an extra !oRestoreMana in the process..), but I did get the benefit of him summoning the Plain Gold Ring on me. I teleported, the J followed, and then I killed it. I then went back and killed the Ring, completely using up the rest of my !oRestoreMana. >_<

Ooh, I also managed to kill Nodens and a Cyber Angel Daemon Wyrm Lich in Heaven.

Which leaves only the Unicorn left, but I still don't think I can take him >_<

Combat is much easier when you don't care about preserving items. I fight random U's and D's in Hell, and Word of Destruction whenever my SP runs low ^^ 30M xp now. Post again at 50, I guess.

I just checked through the winners (well, the green ones, anyway) for lowest speed and +20+10 does indeed appear to be the worst, so congradulations on that as well.

Hey, wait a minute, the prior lowest was +22+10 and it was jointly held by both of my winners! I was the best at something and didn't even know it until you took it away! Darn you!

What a haul, what a haul! Well, not really. The only item I've found since last post, worth mentioning is Vilya.

Made 50 million XP! Though, the last X hours were pretty boring, just continuing to kill Cyberdemons, Star Spawns, Dracolisks, Hounds of Tintalos, and Great Wyrms of most flavors.

Fighting in Hell isn't too dangerous, as long as you remember never to teleport. One time, I teleported to save real time (i.e. as opposed to walking), and landed next to a druj pit. Fortunately I had Invulnerability activated one turn before, but it still managed to bring me down to like 1/2 HP. Yeah, the fact that none of the pits have walls make random teleporting possibly deadly.

Elliot: Well, my speed is +22+10 now, so we'll say we share the record in a three-way tie. ^^
