Trying Entroband, and loving it.

When should I start finding artifacts?

On 15.11.2005 18:22 bcbarnes wrote:
artifacts should be coming along at your depth. I would recommend spending more time at a given dungeon level (recalling / going back down to the same depth) instead of diving. it is easy for a berserker to be overwhelmed and without an easy escape option.

you are playing with preserve off: so if you have a "special feeling" about a level, there is an artifact on it.

also, try to get a source of resist poison soon. you will definitely need that before you dive much more! a single drolem would kill you right now. good luck!

one more note: I would carry around a large stash of cure critical wounds potions, which can be bought dozens at a time in town shops. it will cure confusion and heal a fair amount. quaffing a half dozen of them is as good as quaffing a healing potion.

start stockpiling potions of speed, too.

Well, I got a poison resistance and my first artifact. However, it didn't set off the special feeling on the level.

I stockpiling stuff now. Do you think that I could get through the keep with this guy?

On 15.11.2005 19:32 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote:
Only "true" artifacts set off the special level feeling, and only if they are on the ground. You must have killed someone carrying the Phial and then picked it up before the level feeling updated.

To what "keep" are you referring? The Vault? I wouldn't recommend it at your level with a berserker. Then again, what's the worst that could happen? :)

Beat Baphomet by the skin of my teeth.

I used up my modest stockpile of !ofSpeed and !ofHealing trying to beat him.

Good job! He's no easy fight, that's for sure. This guy is coming along nicely.

OK, I think that going up and down between levels 47-48 is getting boring.

I am tempted to do that castle quest, but I remember it being *very* hard. The vault was a pushover though. :)

First you'll have to do the cloning pits. You've definitely got the killing power to take on anything there, but I've never played a berserker before so I don't know how hard it will be with "very bad" stealth.

Ditto what Rob said. You've got more than enough firepower and hp, plus there are some crucial resists for that quest, but you've got them all covered. Still, its a significant quest, and there's usually a high fatality rate the first time you do one of those. I'd bring in everything you've got, but still recognize that you might not survive

On 17.11.2005 02:56 thegpfury@gmail.com wrote:
Well, I am waiting for the moment on the rest of the quests. I am just fighting my way up levels.

Got Mouth o' Sauron outside a vault. For someone who died with a single sword blow in the movie, he sure was hard. Used lots of !ofHealing. He didn't summon anything, which was nice.

On 17.11.2005 18:53 thegpfury@gmail.com wrote:
Well, that was interesting. Took on the King In Yellow, a Greater Balrog, Brand, and Charon all at the same time, *with* their summons. I love vampirism and !of*healing*

Whew, that was hard.

I will not be doing eric's quest for a bit. I remember that being *hard*. I hit a vault, and obliterated another bunch of uniques. Is there any way to increase my saving through? the cursing is really hurting.

an amulet of anti-magic, or any item with anti-magic (most common would be terror mask) is good for berserkers and saving throw. also, some quests, such as eric and the other high-level quests ... are best avoided as a berserker. very very dangerous for little reward.

Well, got Vlad down. Found terror mask. Still working through levels slowly. I am kicking myself for not getting the corpse of Lord Borel on Hendrake. It is one of the quest unique corpses. I have found most of them now.

Nope. Check your quest screen: cntrl-Q, I believe.

In this 'band, the big baddie is someone else, and with a different lieutenent, though you find them in the usual place. To preserve any remaining surprise, I'll be vague about them. Sauron and Morgoth are both around, though.

In the Entroband hierarchy of bad guys, the progression kinda goes like:
Super Special Unique (he's new, so there's no spoiler on him and most folks who've fought him agree that he's the worst) -> Bad guy -> 3 Top Uniques (of whom Morgoth is one) -> 5-7 2nd tier really nasty but otherwise non-special uniques (of whom Sauron and the Bad Guy's lieutenent are 2) -> Everyone else.

Your current top 10 uniques killed is headed by Surtur and The Witch-King, both of whom are tough, but still fall into the "Everyone else" category.

I am the maintainer for FuryBand/FuryMod and have played TOME a lot, so what exactly should I expect from the *big* *bad* *guy*. I got through the nether realm in tome and won that way.

My biggest issue right now is summoning. 1 on 1 I am unstoppable, but the summoning wears me out.

I notice that you have many potions of healing but no potions of *healing*. without giving anything away, I would say that elliott's description of the unique hierarchy is very accurate. you will needs some *healing* for the uniques which do not fall in the 'everyone else' category, so start saving those, and be very careful when encountering a level 90+ unique for the first time. the big bad guy in entroband is perhaps 1.5 times as difficult as morgoth, who you should encounter first...

if you make it far enough to encounter the Super Special Unique (whose identity should be clear from other dumps in the ladder), I would probably just run. fast.

I don't mind spoilers. I have already checked the R_INFO.txt to see a few things, and the actual source code to pick a race.

I used all of my *healing* on The Witch-King of Angmar and The Emperor Quylthulg and Yig, Father of Serpents who jumped me all at the same time. Fortuneately, it was in a tight corridor so they didn't summon that much. Just a bunch of minor unique dragons and bloodthirsters.

I was pretty sure that was you.

Speaking in ToME terms (I'm afraid I'm not as familiar with FuryBand, though its on the list of things I'd like to do), the final bad guy in Entroband (not the special secret one, though you don't have to fight him and he's actually pretty hard to find) is roughly on par with ToME's Morgoth (maybe a bit weaker in melee, but better breath weapons and spells), though his lieutenent is, IMO, weaker than ToME's Sauron (though much stronger in melee). Entroband's Morgoth is nerfed a bit, and is maybe comparable to ToME's Ancalagon, but he's the weakest of his set of 3 (they're the "Lazy Guardians" because they are the 3 uniques that guard the Lazy Artifacts, which only characters with the "Lazy" personality can find).

Entroband really doesn't have anything comparable to ToME's Melkor (which is just as well, considering how much weaker the characters tend to be). Even the special bad guy, though he has some nasty tricks, doesn't have anywhere near Melkor's staying power.

How did you do the Old Castle quest without doing the Cloning Pits?

Whee, got another bunch down.

In one level, fought Ancalagon the Black, M. Bison, The Tarrasque, Jisisl of Ice, Richard Wong, Master of Time, Hela, Queen of the Dead, , Corwin, Lord of Avalon, rupart, and banor.

Interesting. I tried that once, but the character died early and I didn't really explore it. Have you played enough without that option on to notice the difference?

It plays much quicker, since I only have to complete one dungeon.

However, there are no guaranteed artifacts.

Well, hit level 50 by playing with something that summons greater dragons.

Running *very* fast.

Good plan ... Being overwhelmed by greater dragonkind has got to be the number one killer of super powerful berserkers! Flee while you can :)

Actually, what I meant was that I have 47 speed *normally*. I was playing with dragons for the fun of it.

I retreated though when they summoned great worms of space-time. I can't take those on in groups. I don't think that my character is quite ready to go deeper. I am currently picking off uniques one at a time. Is that the way to go?

Oh, OK. You are superbly powerful and can probably kill most anything at the moment! Great Wyrms of Space Time are on the low end ... watch out for Sky Drakes and Great Wyrms of Power ;-)

If you can, lose the +8 ring of speed for a good ring of damage or a ring of power. Anything over +35 base speed is not really beneficial.

Good Luck!

I find space-time harder than sky drakes, the sky drakes don't do as much damage.

I wasn't aware about the speed. I will see about finding a nice ring. I think I have one left over.

What does the fishing pole do?

On 19.11.2005 04:27 wrote:
Oh, one more thing. In hengband, slaying from rings effect the same hand that the ring is on. So Tulkas gives (+10, +10), but it applies to your right hand with 7 attacks. So you gain +70 damage per round. Switch Tulkas to your left hand and it will apply to your falcon sword, giving +110 damage per round. Now 40 extra damage per round probably seems rather insignificant when you are dishing out 1500+ but every little bit counts!!

*burp*

Just finished Wa-Ha man the golden. He was a push over. I got the scythe of slicing songmaster, which should replace the falcon sword once I get it skilled with it.

*burp* again.

Just blasted Combat Echizen *and* Kronos at the same time. Took out kronos, used up my last !ofLife and crunched Combat Echizen.

Wow, that was *too* close.

If I hadn't found that pot of life, I would be dead. I got Loki and Godzilla easily, then found that the next level held the Destroyer. It involved attacking for a round, backing off, attacking again, and again, and again. I could even get the drops because a greater balrog crashed my party and summoned all around me, and didn't feel up to fighting at 50 hit points.

GROAN!!!

I got jumped by a pack of archons. They won.

Oh well, I will try again.

Ah, sorry to see that. You were doing really well, too. FWIW, the Destroyer is a varsity level opponent, and you did well in beating him. I've actually never killed it.
