Still haven't won ToME - perhaps this will be the one? I had an Alchemist earlier who was doing quite well, but got killed in the second of the special levels in Angband... this time, I am aiming at taking a bit more time and getting more potions before taking on Angband.

Good Luck with Azioth.
This is the first char ever I have seen maxing both: Archery and Combat Skills.
Let's see if this is a fertile approach.

OMG, I totally just cloned this guy (girl?)! (with Tom, a Dwarf Barbarian Antimagic Axemaster, sound familiar?)

I swear it's a total coincidence! There I was, thinking I did something original, bah. Only difference I can see is that I took ammo creation.

Nice cloak, by the way. Does Antimagic let you actually use the Thunderlord Horn/Staff?

I don't know if it's a fertile approach - it was sure useful for a while in the middle game, but lately, I've been using close combat for more or less everything. On the other hand, with antimagic, there aren't all that many other skills I'd want to spend the points on, so I thought why not max Archery.

veryfoobar-tome:
I don't know if Antimagic lets me use it... I guess I should try it. Antimagic lets me activate junkarts - but my success chance is so low that it's not worth bothering.

Oh, and I do have ammo creation - in fact, last night, I scummed the Lothlorien wolves quest a bit and created a bunch of ammo... got three sets of artifact ammo out of that.

I'm down to 3850 feet in Angband now... the quests are real fun, especially with always small levels :) 20 bronze golems in a level just consisting of two small rooms... along with lesser wall monsters which ate all the walls... summoning greater demons which summoned even more greater demons - it took quite a while to get all the summoners killed.

I'll probably upload an updated dump tonight.

Started working my way down Angband... done the quests down to 3900' now, last one was Ancalagon the Black, and next up is the Tarrasque at 3950'. Neither of which is as scary as 18 Sky Drakes in a small level, so I had 5 or 6 of them in the room I started in.

Oh, and I would like to express my major annoyance at the fact that my Dwarven Axemaster was not wanting to wield the Axe of the Dwarves - due to the silly fact that the game counts it as a polearm. Come-on - surely the Axe of the Dwarves should be a suitable weapon for a dwarven Axemaster???

Found Mormegil, and had a bit of fun levelling it up... until it gained Earthquakes, at which point it became too annoying, and I returned to my trustworthy axe.

I'm at 4200' in Angband, so next up is the second special level... before taking that on, though, I am doing some serious stocking up on potions - my last character who got this far was killed by that level; I have no intentions to let this one meet the same fate.

On 27.11.2005 09:49 veryfoobar-tome@yahoo.com wrote:
Mormegil might actually be useful in DimGates, to cancel all the Q summons and disturb LOS for breathers. Or did you leave it lying on the floor? I don't see it in your dump. Of course, a vanilla Dark Sword would work almost as well.

Did you try out the Hatchet of the Night at all? It's one of the axes I'm hoping to find.

Took a break for a couple of days from this character... playing possessors and sorcerers. Finally felt in the mood for my Axemaster again today, went to the Lonely Mountain and found more potions, before tackling Dim Gates.

I had very little trouble with it - quaffing a potion of speed before entering any new area, and using the ring of Flare to swap position to next to the Q's at times, it was surprisingly easy - or perhaps I was overcautious after getting my last really good character killed here.

Not sure what to do next - either continue diving down in Angband, doing my quests, or run through some of the dungeons I haven't done yet (like Orc Caves, Old Forest and Moria, for example) looking for good shops to spend those 10+ million AU of mine.

Going to try out the Hatchet of the Night for a while now. Mormegil, I sold to a shop, so it's gone forever.

Have done the quests down through 4700' in Angband now, plus killed the dungeon guardians of more or less all the other dungeons I know of (except Heart of the Earth, which is too annoying). Heading to Erebor to refill my stock of healing potions (yet again) now, before taking on a bit more of Angband.

Last quest was a fumblefinger quest for 15 Greater Demonic Q's - most challenging quest I've had in Angband so far, as they tended to summon wall-eating greater demon.

Finally! Killing Sauron for the eighth time, he finally dropped the One Ring. Apart from "Hand of Doom", which seemed to do a ridiculous amount of damage - whatever it is, I don't think he has it in Vanilla - he wan't too much of a problem... his summons took a bit of time to clear up when he'd summoned greater demons which summoned even more stuff in turn.

I guess this means it's time to head to Mount Doom and see what that looks like.

Okay, all stocked up and ready to recall down and hunt Morgoth now... if this works, it will be my first T.o.M.E-win ever. And if not, I'll have had a lot of fun in the proceedings anyhow, and I've learned quite a bit about the game that I didn't know before.

Morgoth has fallen! Actually, he was surprisingly easy - the earthquakes meant there wasn't much room for summons, and he fell quickly - Sauron put up tougher fights than Morgoth did.

And first item I found on my trip down to hunt for Morgoth in Angband was a Fur Cloak of Air... which I assume will be quite useful for the void.

Now, going to run around for a while in Angband, dive to the bottom of it, and see if I can gather up any useful equipment.
