Slow start. Hionhurn didn't even bother to kick in an Augmentation until CL21. But he threw in another on CL25, so I guess all is forgiven.

With this build, I will play like a mage who can fight in a pinch if need be. Best piece of luck so far was some Lordly Protection in Doom Quest I.

I just completed the DL24 quest for the Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner, who was easy thanks to my trusty staff of speed. I think I need some detection before going to stat depth, so I will probably do the vapor quest next despite lack of Chaos and Nexus resistance. Probably unwise ...

Augmentations at CL21, 25 and 30. At least I beat Dave to get my first stat maxxed out! Woohoo!

I farmed 500+ Granite Walls for 170,000xp and 60,000gp. After 500 monster kills, you stop getting full xp for the rest of the game, but it helped go from CL28(?) to nearly CL31.

Let's see. I'm doing 0hp/round in melee and 50-60hp/round with spells. Quite a ways to go before I could possibly tackle the Cloning Pits ... I'll need to shift back to a melee approach some time soon, as spell damage does not even come close to cutting it ...

Whoa... wait, killing 500 of any monster reduces XP gain from killing other things too? Totally did not know that. I thought monsters kill xp were just on a diminishing returns for itself. Hm. Warriors of the Dawn are a lot more annoying than I thought if this is true.

My bad ... Killing 500 of a particular monster type reduces xp gained from that monster type for the rest of the game. If you leave the level and run into the same monster type later, xp is still reduced. Meaning that I no longer want to farm Granite Walls, which is a shame, since at 300+xp each, it was very quick :) Sorry for the confusion ...

BTW, I went and got Sting, and switched back to a "Shrewd" warrior. Nearly 200hp of damage per round, but my Lordly Protection now sits at home. Good thing Sting came with Poison resistance!

Trying to fish out Ishikawa. No luck. So I grabbed my lone ?oAcquirement and off to the Dark Cave, just like other Ring of Speed obtainers out there, but I only get Elvenkind Armour. Still this is *way* better than my normal yield of a weapon of slay orc, or perhaps a shovel of digging.

On the way back I discover a shield of resistance with Nexus. OK, I am coming along. Still, given my near death experience with Father Dagon in the Castle, I hesitate over the Cloning Pits. I need to double my damage output somehow ...

AFAIK, the ring of speed results from scrolls of protection have all come from quasi-suicidal people reading them in R'lyeh. Its probably possible to get one in the Dark Caves, but I bet its awfully improbable.

Yeah ... I sure as heck am not going anywhere near R'lyeh! I've read enough scrolls of acquirement to know that 95% of the time you get junk ... It's the 5% that keeps me going ;-)

Gotta love the Mine. Every trip down nets about 50,000gp, althought the digging is a bit tedious. I know understand how Dwarves feel :)

Got a special level in the Mine ... Wow! Only one object generated on the level and it was the Cloak Thingol. What are the odds?

I suppose it is time to consider the Cloning Pits. My melee is a bit less than I would hope, but my shooting is OK. Plus, I have the required resistances. Stealth is so, so, and speed non-existant, yet I have 10 or so Staves of Speed, so perhaps I could do it. I'll give it a go tomorrow ...

Hek. Let's do the Cloning Pits tonight!

Pretty lackluster in that none of the Its dropped anything, but by the time I got to the Gachapins, I netted Zantetsuken (I thougth this was Ishikawa's Katana????) and Isildur (my current armour was cursed on, however) and Cambeleg (Wow!). So in the end, not a bad take.

Now the one Uber nasty monster on the quest was Glaurung, Father of the Dragons. While he only weighs in at DL48, let me tell you he is plenty scary with all his summoning capability. I took him out in a crowd of Fire Ants, and sacrificed 3 !oHealing to do it. Well spent if you ask me ...

So here is the Post Cloning Pits picture. Now for some sleep ;-)

On 4.12.2005 15:07 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Nice one finding Zantetsuken, and nice longbow, too. Glaurung is definitely a load-and-a-half. I find his melee damage pretty imposing as well.

With no way to detect monsters save my lone Rod of Detection, I am pretty much stuck at this depth. I've been working the Mine to build gold and then doing the town circuit hoping for more detection, or perhaps some lucky crown of telepathy. No dice.

On the good side, however, I've been able to purchase *both* of my spellbooks in the Black Market, and both at a 25% discount. Easiest Armageddon Tome I've ever found! No scary Hell Wyrms to battle for it ... :)

Detection problem solved! I was hoping a crown of telepathy would eventually show up in the Black Market and I finally got my wish.

Bye, Bye, Mine! Hello, Dragon's Lair!

Of other note is Celegorm with Shards resistance just like my last character. Nice. Things are moving much more quickly now, and I even scored Augmentation #4 at CL36, but this one came from a potion. Hionhurn now just needs to sit back and leave me alone :)

Still working the lair. Without double resistance, greater elemental dragons are a bit scary. I've killed a couple Bile Wyrms and Storm Wyrm so far. As long as I get the jump on them, it isn't too bad.

Gotta love that Beam of Gravity. A stunned monster is easy prey for my sharp katana!

I almost forgot why I picked the Shrewd personality. CL45 brings Mana Storm. 480hp of unresistable damage which is currently at 23% fail for 54 sp. Now a Wizardstaff brings that to 20% fail for 40sp ... at CL50 that will be a nice 5% fail! Definitely a viable alternative to melee ... its just that I fight so well at the moment. Zarcuthra probably dishes out 1000hp per round against dragonkind, assuming 6 hits (Lets see ... 5 * 1.22 * 5d6 + 77 = 187 hp per strike times 6 strikes gives 1121 damage vs. dragons. Pretty effective!)

Going the way of aggravation ... Dave, how do you do this? All it takes is one Wall Monster or Spawn of Ubbo-Sathla and the level is lost. Faced with a greater vault, I had to put up with a Greater Hell Wyrm fighting Ultra-Elite Paladins. Scrolling thru 10,000+ extraneous boring messages is very tedious. I ended up just destructing that portion of the vault in frustration!

But I did retrieve *another* ring of lordly protection!!! This one has my required Sound resistance, so all resistances are now covered. I suppose I could play without Dark resistance and recover my stealth, but I'll keep at it this way for a while ...

Well, there is CL50. Still waiting on many an uber artifact ...
Rings of speed have gone +4, +2, -5, -5, +5. Nothing to wear so far.
On the good news front, I netted The Falcon Sword of Destruction. Pretty nice, as long as I am aggravating. Not quite as deadly against dragons as Zarcuthra but more all around utility.
I could also explore mage mode with Incanus. A 500hp Mana Storm for 40sp with a 5% fail rate is not bad. Plus I have the Eat Magic mutation. Its just that 500hp pales in comparison to the melee damage I am doing ...

On 10.12.2005 14:55 adamsherring@hotmail.com wrote:
Damnit,

You beat me - first chaos-warrior to level 50. Although, I do have that jack-of-shadows you wanted - it kicks ass. I never knew how good it was until I wore something that aggrivated. I've pretty much relied on stealthiness the whole game to get me through.

Lets see who dies first then :)

My money's on me -- you seem to have nicer stuff. Good luck with the whole not dying thing then.

(CL50:DL72)
Working the Dragon's Lair waiting for a ring of speed higher than +5. I've found 6 so far. I switched to Mage mode to try things out. +23 base speed, all resistances, 200hp/round melee but reliance on Mana Storm. 2 things:
[1] This was no where close to the power I wield with melee. The problem is you just run out of mana too quick. I couldn't even take a sinlge Great Wyrm of Law! I don't know how mages can do it ... they are about 10% as powerful as anyone who can fight worth a darn (And Chaos Warriors cast Chaos as well as a mage with Chaos as their primary realm!)
[2] Failing to cast Chaos spells can disenchant your stuff even if you have disenchantment resistance. Sadness when I read 'Your boots of Shiva's Avatar are disenchanted'! Sigh ...

So while in this build, I entered a level with that good ol' special feeling. Westernesse reveals 10+ uber uniques including the Destroyer, Kaschei, The Living Flame, Ymir. A Checkerboard vault!! I got Slayer in the deal, but not much else (another +5 ring of speed and another lordly protection with Shards this time).

I've been a moron twice so far. First moron caused me to break out my New Life. I figured with 6 potions of New Life, I could improve on my 95% life rating. I did, at the expense of Int ... 110% life rating and Con went from 18/100 base to 18/120. Gained 100hp in the transaction.

Plain Gold Ring = 490 + 10d10
Black Reaver = 334 + 10d10

Oh, I was thinking about how melee in Entroband has gotten a boost. I guess this character is case in point. 6 attacks for 726hp of damage, but there is an extra +10 damage from Anabasis, +10 from Tulkas, +8 from Maelstrom and +20 from Diatribe for a grand total of +48 to damage. Thats 288 out of 726hp so the Heng equivalent would have been 438hp per round. So Entro gave this character a 65% damage boost! I suppose if Tulkas was not (+10, +10) [+25] I would be wearing something else like Extra Attacks or even Damage +21, but knowing me, I'd probably have gone with Speed +10 instead.

Just thinking out loud ...
