Wow, when's the last time someone found a 4th book they actually need early? Blessings of the Grail, no less, in a vault in Dlvl 25!

Orc Camp also netted me a really nice Cloak, so I'm off to a fairly decent start (though play time is a bit high). The Great Hammer of Extra Attacks (+2) is interesting, but unlikely to ever see use :/

And I've finally started labelling where I find items again.. Brian, if you're reading this, is it possible to have another auto-inscription for dlvl and monster where you get each item?

Main goal is to allow for school changes later on... thinking pick up Nature for Wall of Stone for Arena, and then maybe change to either Trump or Craft or Crusade (or possibly Chaos again, if Brian doesn't get around to fixing the Word of Destruction Spell)

Pretty awesome progress so far with items, but not many potions to be found. And I still only have the weapon as a source of FA, which is a little bit upsetting.

Thankfully Tetsuga of Flame no longer has -1 to speed, but wishing I can spot Hagen soon.

Candide still hits like a little girl, and whiffs 90% of the time, but thanks to a few decent item finds, his speed is actually pretty good for the moment. Stats still suck though (other than WIS, that is).

Soulsword is pretty nice, but since I have all of the resistances it provides covered other ways, Fiona is better thanks to its +2 speed. It'd be nice to find an randart shooter soon..

Found a number of good artifacts, and this character is really coming together. Then I thought, hm, Wall of Stone is clvl 40... I can get an artifact now! And I even have a Mace of Disruption ready! And so I switched realms to Nature to pick up Wall of Stone.

Doing my final checklist though, I realized I no longer have Haste Self spell, since that was from Craft >_< While the Babble should be doable at +21 with Wall of Stone, Reflect, and Fire Immunity, +11 is WAY too slow.

So I had to switch back. Gyah! Burnt 10+ spells...

Tiamat dropped several nice items (including Jewel, and the pretty good RoSpeed (+12)), and this character's just about ready for the end-game. I'd really like more DEX and CON though.. Unfortunately, I don't have very many sources of RSound, RNexus, or RDisenchant. Was contemplated using Julian and Hammerhand, which would allow me to use Hurin...

Hm. Maybe I should try to kill Morgoth and pick up the first Lazy artifact and hope that covers it up. 730 HP is way way way too low though, and to top things off I can't use Death school for Vampirism True. :/

No idea how to tackle the Unicorn or the One Ring... I will probably switch to Nature for the One Ring, to corner it in with Wall of Stone.

Nice number of good mutations... though White Aura was picked up very recently, and wasn't there most of the game. To be honest, I've never ran out of SP except practicing spells, so Eat Magic was somewhat less useful than for Beryl (mostly because Craft and Life spells are cheaper than Nature counterparts, I bet). Still, the Extra Legs mutations carried me through the post-CloningPits failure depression, so I'm quite grateful for it.

Found Quickthorn, which finally replaces Soulsword, and to top it off I Blessed it on the first try! Reward for killing Destroyer was Diatribe (!! So that's why he hits so hard!), but strangely enough, I *still* can't use it because of lack of RShards (well, I have plenty of armor sources of RShards, but none that doesn't count me RSound, and while I don't carry any important potions with me for the time being, stunning is bad). That's TWO great artifacts I can't use now because of resistance pseudo-holes (the other being Slayer, which I would really like to use because of Vampirism).

Well, first try against Oberon was a no go. Empty arena level = bad for Craft (but extremely good for Nature). I'd really like to kill Nappa for my Justice Scroll of Artifact Creation, but he's nowhere to be found. Not that I know what to enchant with it even if I do manage to get it.. maybe a Diamond Edge, if I can manage to find another one. I have the Gloves of Genji, so dual wielding a nice Diamond Edge artifact and the Stick could be viable..

Am I crazy for trading 12 speed for RShards!? Possibly, but let's just say I'm paranoid about Cyberdemons. Besides, since I'm always hasted unless I'm fighting Dispelling monster, that's comparing +30 vs. +42, which is a 15% speed difference at most. Hm, actually, 15% sounds kinda big.. Maybe I'll bring the RoSpeed along for a swap.

IMO, Berserkers are actually the worst class to use death scythes, because the Berserkers get extra blows and hit so hard that their return blows are especially hard, more than outweighing their extra HP.

The best classes to use them are, surprisingly, the weak melee classes: Mages, Bards, Archers, etc. because while they have fewer HP than the warriors, their melee abilities (especially blows/round) are even worse, so they are less likely to kill themselves.

It's surprising which uniques are tough and which unique aren't as tough for this build. I would have thought that Great Cthulu with its Cyberdemon and Star-spawn summons + Disintegration breath would have been super hard, but he went down pretty easily. Nodens was difficult but manageable, as I could pitch fights in walls. Raphael, on the other hand, summons Dragons that then chain summon.

Hm. True Healing is at 1% Fail right now, and I've been using it pretty often when HP < 500. This could eventually be the death of me.. I need to find something to give me the final one percent... Ring of Wizardry or Wizardstaff or better yet, the Yumi ^^

Thanks for all the research into the Death Scythe, Chris! Remember, however, that Force attack is not standard on Death Scythes, and that even if it were, Berserkers don't have SP, so it's a moot point for them.. (only a 3x slay on your zombie.. ^^)

I saw Raphael 3 times so far. First time was an empty arena that quickly got out of hand and I ?oTeleportLevel. Second time, I tried attacking him in a corner of a room from the wall, which usually is the safe way to dispatch most monsters. He summoned a few Sky Drakes, which promptly breathed Gravity on me to move me into the middle. Teleport and then abort. Last try I set up the ASC, and was doing OK, when he GoI at 6 stars, and then some Balrogs and Nycademons decided on intrude on the party :/ While theoretically he shouldn't be hard, I've not been able to manage circumstances yet.

No sight of Morgoth at all. I've been able to kill Destroyer and Nodens with 0 resources though! (Again, I think I'm relying too much on my 1% Fail True Healing..)

Slew Morgoth and got the Yumi, which finally makes True Healing 0% Fail--nice. Loss of Crimson loses my one source of RNether, and I have the choice of either Hell Collar, or randart Helm "Bladereturner" (and eating a 200SP penalty for weight!). Unicorn is DOWN!

Man, that was way too annoying. I got the Unicorn down to 1 star at least 5 times, but didn't manage to make a killing blow for a long while. The main part of the strategy is crowd control--while bites to time are kind of annoying, Restoration spell basically counteracts it. I'd attack a few rounds until stats were too drained, then Teleport and then Restore and re-buff. The main trick I had to pull was detection-range Destructing, since the level filled up MANY times with high Angels and high Wyrms. I brought with me 2 Staves of Destruction and 15 !oRecharging, and in the end was down to 1. That would have been annoying if I had to abort at 1 star.

No resources used! (Other than 4 Rods of Fire Balls that blew up). I re-affirm that Eat Magic is the STRONGEST mutation out there for all caster types (other than Mages who have it intrinsically, of course).

Got the Stick (was hoping for Clothes, but whatever). It provides RShards, which is nice.

Final reflections:

This game was surprisingly easy (possibly because I've played Life Priest before), and especially more so now that I learned to take advantage of realm changing. Used Chaos for most of the initial levels for good ranged/area damage, then switched to Sorcery for Haste spell, and then switched to Craft when I found the third book. I pretty much stayed with Craft until I needed Nature for the Babble fight, and then switched back right afterwards. I had 20+ spells left over, so there wasn't too much luck involved in Spell draws... key point is to study only from books which contain useful spells.

I don't think Candide used a single Potion or Mushroom past a certain point (none against Unicorn of Order, One Ring, Serpent, Morgoth, Sauron, and Oberon). Life by far one of the more useful schools, and the HUGE discounts Priests have on it makes it almost too easy.

Brian, if you're reading this, I'd suggest to increase cost of the Healing and True Healing spells for Priests.

That being said, I also had the other huge advantage of Eat Magic. (Otherwise, !oRestoreMana at least would have been a big issue) Since this is the first character who picked up that mutation via !oPolymorph (Beryl scummed creation for it), I don't think it's overpowered--it's pretty rare as it is. However, I do want to note that I was stockpiling !oPolymorph, and did intend on repeatedly quaffing and Cure Mutation until I picked up that one.

Other than that, Lazy is always a slow start, which makes me not like to play them as much as Sexy.

Ooh, and the Death Scythe creation was pretty interesting! Though, like Elliot mentioned, it might have been more interesting with Kill Dragon and/or on a Rogue (but then virtue would probably be Evil, and returns would hit twice as hard...)

Good Job!

Nice work! That's a serious powerhouse character!

How did things go with that Death Scythe? Constant fear of death from return blows, or was it manageable?

IMO, Life/Craft Priests can make a serious claim to being the most powerful class/magic combo in the game (that relatively low level winner I posted in Hengband was a Life/Craft Priest as well). They might not have quite the offensive pop of other classes, but their staying power is pretty much second to none. Pass through Walls plus all the Craft buffing spells plus the cheap and reliable Life healing and restoration makes it really easy to keep yourself together, especially combined with eat magic. I had a hard time with Oberon and other mana drainers, but I suspect you didn't.

In addition to potentially nerfing healing, there's no reason for characters to take reduced damage when in walls, since monsters don't get it.

amusing final dump. nice damage there! I saw your comment about making healing more expensive; it would probably be appropriate, but I may leave that as-is for now. non-expert players would probably suffer disproporionately badly if I made that change.

dealing with players in walls, however, is something on my long-term horizon...

Deathscythe must be somehow different than in heng (other than being an artifact too). With only +75 to hit you should have like atleast 30% miss rate on close to 200 ac monsters. With 8 hits your chance of missing 3 hits (which should kill you or get you very low) should be so large you couldnt fight too many mobs without dying.

I'm still unsere did the player even use it or just wields it for the dumps. If it however would be usable it sure turns in the game into super-easymode.

I've always considered priest to be the easiest class to *Win* in Heng if you only got one chance to try it. Good melee + Life magic ftw.

One thing I never really understood is why Life High-Mages are inferior to Life Priests... with only 3 max blows compared to 5, and also with no second school (which I'm more and more convinced if super-useful if you know how to use it properly). Thus, actually my recommended change would be to swap the Levels/Costs of Life spells for High Mages and Priests.. then maybe someone would actually play a Life High-Mage, and Life Priests aren't this easy.

I wielded Optimism all of three times... first time when I was testing it out in Dragon Caves for return blows, second time against Invulnerable Raphael (who just refused to die any other way), and this last time for the final dump. Looking through the oook monster spoiler, I got the feeling the Unicorn of Order doesn't actually count as an animal, which means NONE of the slays available applies to it, so Optimism isn't worth its risk.

I considered using it against the Chemist, but decided I just had way too few HP to play with. I mean Candide's life rating of 103 isn't bad, per se, but taking an extra expected 300 damage per round really makes me want to be over the 1000 mark, especially against a tough opponent like the Chemist.

Does anyone know if for Wraithform, if you're in a wall, does that mean damage is reduced by a factor of 4? (Since Wraithform also includes a 1 in 2 miss chance for all attacks)

Comments on passwall:

[1] The damage reduction is due to the fact that monsters cannot target you with ball based attacks, or breaths. Instead, they must target the square next to you, so damage is reduced accordingly (by 2?). Monsters also have this advantage. Try casting a Fire Ball on a Spectral Wyrm sitting in the wall :-) Plus, Mana Bolts and Psycho Spears and melee all hit for full damage. Any change here would probably involve changes to the targetting code, so would probably symmetrically nerf players and monsters alike, though monsters do not use their passwall as intelligently as most players!

[2] Wraithform has an additional 50% invulnerability effect, or rather all damage from all attacks is reduced by 50%, as far as I know. I remember this used to be something like 80% at one point, so has already been reduced thru the years. Plus, all of the targetting advantages in [1] apply as well.

And yes, passwall is very very powerful. Less so than invulnerability but probably more general utility as it offers opportunity for rest. But players should never use invulnerability vs. any monster with either dispel magic or psycho spear.

The game pretty conclusively states that mages are superior in all other schools except LIFE where priests are superior. So priests are superior even to high mages when it comes to casting life spells... by design.

Yes, it does state that, but there's no reason you can't change the text in a help file. For example, Crusade High Mages are more effective than Crusade Priests (or Paladins, for that matter), but "logically" that wouldn't be the case.

I happen to think that changing the Help File to remove stating "except Life" on the High Mage is a good balancing move considering the relative abilities of Priest vs. High Mage.. and if the player wants an easy game with Priest, Easy Mode is always available.

or they could just remove life magic from mages alltogether.

Having now completed a couple of Life High Mages (both in Heng), I'd say they are surprisingly powerful. The key is Eat Magic (which you have, but most priests do not). I found myself able to walk around with nearly permanent ultimate resistance, just occasionally eating magic to keep my sp up ... That's something a priest could never dream of :) Of course, they do suck in melee ...
