Latest of many (many) attempts to get through Ironband with a primarily magic-oriented character. Utterly failed to survive with initial focus on spells - just too wimpy, too little mana - but with an initial focus on being buff (CON rather than STR, but some of each) I have made it OK thus far. Still need a source of magical offense more potent than magic missiles, and I suspect that I am going to have to rely on spells only for single tough guys with melee as backup for mobs; but we will see.

The warhammer is good, but too heavy to wield effectively. I swap it i for dragons and when I need the resistances. The short stature really sucked when I had to abandon an awesome greatsword!

Challenges thus far: Ardomar was very very tough, and lack of ID is tricky. The two =oProtection are I think very survival-boosting, especially combined with barkskin.

You'll be better when you have more books.

Do you need such high PER? I think of it as very optional for a caster.

Are you getting any mileage out of the hammer's activation? It should be much more effective than in V/NPP, especially against confusion-vulnerable monsters (there are quite a few).

PER: No. But the game thinks I should have it :(.

Activation: I never remember those. So I have not used it yet! But you're right, I should.

And <2 min after posting this, I found book 4 with ID; that was a big help.

Ah yes, as a gnome you will get many PER boosts. Potions of Hastiness will be good if you find them.

Moving down nicely. Only really worried about nether right now, but trying to get to the GMT before that becomes an issue. My AC can be 316, so not expecting the GMT to be a big deal..

hahaha bad luck on the primary weapon activation.

PS Did you farm the spreading infestation on DL25? I should make that impossible

Doesn't look like it; I show only 10 killed total. I do remember being astonished that so much good stuff dropped so instantaneously at one point, and I guess that was it!

OK, now I'm confused: when I just went to check the monster file, spreading infestations don't appear to even drop objects. Which makes the oddity rather weirder. Has anyone else reported this?

On a different note: I don't think that a *pure* spellcaster s really viable. It takes essentially all of my mana, even at maxed WIS, to take out one top-level monster. Which begins to get very limiting! So I have used buffs to reduce incoming damage and my sword to take down almost all non-uniques. Might make sense to really increase mana at very high WIS levels?

Perhaps the S.I was in a vault? I seem to remember that in NPP, objects in the vault are carried by the monsters rather than sitting on the floor?

What are the main attack spells you use when attacking very powerful monsters?

Do you plan to fight the Witch King with melee, missile or magic? I had tried to balance the game so that a character could be designed to use any of the three approaches. I hadn't necessarily expected that a caster would use spells against all monsters on the level...

That could be it, yes.

Powerful monsters: always Rift until they are slowed and again as needed; then generally a mix of melee, mana storm if there's a grouping, and more Rift. I really like sandstorm when there's sand to use. As I recall from just fighting the Mouth, I was using Healing every other turn or so which meant that I wanted to reserve a lot of mana for that, so mostly using melee in between. Missile fire was surprisingly effective, too, more so than melee some times. By the end of the Mouth battle I was down to about 60 mana, and he was the first thing I had thought on the level. Level 48 was one of the big open levels, and both Saruman and a unique B (someone's steed) were awake and close; I had to teleport the latter away (especially as I never had Nether resistance) an hope, as Saruman was another case where I ran through mana like water. The risk-reward ratio is very different for the big uniques versus say a pit of dragons, which I could take down in melee en masse with little or no needed for mana other than to maintain buffs, and which had a much better drop total. [So probably what I should do in many cases is teleport the big guys away; but I am never confident that they will not resist.]

The big deal about high INT/WIS is a low or zero fail rate. Critical for healing.

The Witch King I expect that I will treat like the Mouth. The Mithril Slay Evil shots (why are there not gnomish shots? :) ) should be good at range if I need them, but I expect that I will try to get to melee range to minimise incoming nether and use Rift to slow.

Given that WIS is maxed, and I only saw maybe 2 !RestoreMana all game

Perhaps a better solution would be to reduce the SP costs of some powerful combat spells - benefiting near-pure casters but not helping paladin types.

Winner dump; WoR works after the final kill, but the shops are all empty and the guild won't give me a quest :).

WK was no harder than other deep uniques. The slowing effect of Rift is a big deal: either the target is slowed or they're disappeared, either of which makes the fight a lot more lopsided. I also was far far too careful of healing consumables, essentially not using any for the last 20 levels or so and hence using mana for that - so I could have sustained probably two top-level uniques in succession using a spell-melee mix.

Reducing SP costs for some of the top-end spells might work; certainly I saw big reductions in fail rate going along for the highest spells, so a mixed melee-mana character is unlikely to have the ability to rely on them.

Still a very fun variant. Thanks!
