Rapid update, after a battle with Mim that used most of my healing but was a good fight. He took many points off my crossbow and armour at the time, but was kind enough to drop much improved replacement crossbow and shield.

This is annoying - the two email addresses don't merge and so I have comments going on two threads here :-(.

I'll try to stick to this one. This is just after clearing the troll pit; utterly out of mana, consumables, heading down!

The next two increases to AGI each give you +1 to speed. I look forward to reaching 18/40.

Just out of curiosity, do you know that from experience, or is it listed some place?

Midway through clearing a mixed orc-giant-troll pit at dlvl 30. TAing cyclops, whose boulders hit too hard, but otherwise luring a few out at a time and slinging, with melee for backup. Magic is almost exclusively for buffing; odd, but still fun.

Still lacking decent armour for most slots. A good selection of melee weapons, though.

OK. Just cleared (after *many* hours!) lvl 30; eventually tracked down the cyclops and storm giants, with several uniques coming to play along the way; *just* enough consumables to prevent starvation, complete mana drain, etc. Down to 12 hp at one point against a cyclops, but his single red star did indeed go down :).

The level, for all of the combat, yielded nothing in the way of equipment; just xp.

Levels are taking longer now; is the regeneration rate higher as I get deeper?

And mana is hugely limiting. Thus far on this level I've had Vargo, Kavlax, the ambitious drake, and a couple of ancient blue Ds; and half of the very small level remains to be cleared. I did use a couple of frost bolts on Vargo, but the rest of mana use has been purely buffing and ID.

The Ancient D mail is cute and the increase to AC seems to make a big difference; I am just about keeping up with ammo use, and the swap weapons/armour for activations especially (detection & beserk) are very handy.

I've said it already, but this is clearly the most fun variant around right now. Thanks, Antoine.

Now, may I not die, please... :)

You are effectively playing a half-caster rather than a mage. If you wanted to use mana for attack spells rather than buffs and ID, I think you'd need a lot more Int/Wis and a bunch more wands. But both are quite legitimate playstyles.

If you don't get more consumables, though, your days are numbered...

Glad you're enjoying the game :)

A.

Still moving alond nicely, now having several levels where I didn't need to use mana for anything.

Hardest fights so far probably the couple of Nazgul; most care needed for ethereal dragons!

I'm not sure the second ring of slaying is doing you much good. Have a look at what happens to your combat stats when you take it off

Goes down from +35, +450% (Melee) to +27, +380%. So seems to be working - should it not be?

Yeah that's the intended behaviour. Note the tapering off of damage increments as your +-to-dam increases (from an initial +20 down to +5 eventually). There comes a point where an additional =Dam doesn't add much. Up to you whether you've reached that. Not that you have another ring to wear :)

Just about to head down from lvl43. Took some advice and exchanged a ring of slaying for one of ice, primarily to preserve potions; was then lucky to run into a white dragon pit on the next level!

Hmm. Made it down to 49, and hacking away at the Giant Mutant Troll who appears to be the 'Sauron' equivalent - without making the slightest impression. I see a note in the monster description that 'high elves will find this especially challenging' - why?

This is about as buff as I can be: beserked, blessed, barkskin, etc. The GMT appears not to resist acid - I get the 'corrode' message on hits - but neither melee, nor missile fire, nor magic, appears to do any damage...

The end game bosses are extra powerful against high elves. They have more hit points. The hit counter is a bit broken for them - you will have to take off a lot of his hit points before the counter starts to drop.

Back up your save file (in case there's a serious bug here) and keep hacking :)

On 24.7.2009 15:29 ewan wrote:
Yep - other than the hit counter, it seems that the intended behaviour is occurring. Which made the GMT in fact a fairly trivial opponent - he didn't hurt me enough to require more than minimal healing, and I was fighting him at the end of a corridor so no space for summons (does he summon?); whacking away with the +2 attack acid-branded trident took him down easily, if slowly, enough.

Just after GMT fight. There's a mixed-human pit nearby, so my guess is that I will make clvl 35 shortly but may not get to 36 before the end fight.

I used Rift for the first time against the GMT, and the slowing effect was a real help. I also tried confusion, and that worked the first time but not the next two, so I gave up on that. Too bad that the trident doesn't have a troll Slay! :-)

The *Slay* Undead club seemed to be a better choice for the WitchKing, and he went down in the end :). Did take a *lot* of doing - I burned up all of one batch of Slay Evil iron shots that got caught in an acid breath somewhere, and had to chug healing a few times, but dlvl49 had stocked me up on healing pretty well and the W was only a few steps away when I arrived on dlvl50, so not too stressful.

I might go on at some point to get the xp needed to head the ladder, at least briefly :-), but for now Coion is a happy winner.

Thanks again, Antoine; much fun.

Any thoughts on balance, or any changes you'd suggest?

Balance seems good; maybe tilted slightly in the direction of too few good items, *but* I see other dumps with much better armour than I found, and my weapons are pretty good - so I'm probably just greedy.

Hardest part of the game was around late 20s clvl: I was out of my depth, could not build up any consumable stocks. Create Missiles was hugely important, and I suppose one could make archery less effective for balance reasons; I think it is clearly superior to melee against single big monsters, although I don't have any real experience with using magic as my offense. On the other hand, I relied on melee for crowd control.

I did get to 0 hp once, against Ariel, before I got back to playing with appropriate care. So someone more methodical than I would likely have a better time; but then I was trying to save potions..

..all of this really just says no, no big thoughts. I liked the trade-stat potion idea; I like the universal-skill approach; I thought that there was a constant risk of death but clear reward for careful play. Maybe eliminate trap doors, as they're a huge burden in an Ironman setting.

OK, I guess I would note that I think half-trolls are unplayable due to lack of food, which is vexing; and in general the early search for food and light is not much fun (food rather than light seems to be the key, although I had one point where I ran out of light with Coion, I think).
Now playing a dwarf and planning to devote all stat points to melee. We'll see how that works!

On 28.7.2009 00:03 flight2q wrote:
Yeah, half-trolls have a big problem. They need magic for food, but don't do magic. If they stick their stat points into INT, they can eventually do magic, but then they are just a crummy char. It would be good if half-trolls had the ability to detect food; then they could run down the dungeon as needed.

Well, I tried half a dozen because I'd seen the comments (from you I think) on a dump lamenting that everyone plays high elves :). None of them made it past I think clvl10, all died from starvation. I would not try again unless there was a change.

In contrast, my dwarf warrior type is ludicrously unstealthy, but that's a much much much smaller penalty to bear, thus far.
