Let's see if oook is ready for Ironband :)
My first try, was down to 0 hp during the battle with lagduf and has been going strong since then.

Two of the talismans (talismen?... talismani?) have an effect on firebolt so it can be used for 3 mana only, making this character a warrior mage rogue thing, strong enough to be twice the current depth with ease.

Wormy dropped two Artifacts... thanks Mr W.

dlvl20, getting closer to half point. Shagrat dropped a wand of fire balls that I can shoot for 2 SP thanks to the two talismans. Still no usefull ego sword.

Doing good, a lot of bases covered.

I would try to pump Luck a bit if I was you. That will help you find a good ego weapon which you badly need.

3 SP firebolts will keep you going for a while though. (Re your comment on rgra, I think the cost of the spell is what it should be, only the inscription is wrong, but will check on Monday.)

You may meet a new unique or two soon.

A.

Down to 28. Found Acid branded sword. Killed Ardomar, one of the new Ironband Uniques. (nice description!)

Up next on the current level is a big guy nest with some major trolls and two Storm Giants. Those can be nasty.

And a poison brand sword as well. Nice. Are you getting much mileage out of the throwing axe?

Nope, I'm not too much of a thrower guy, so I haven't used it at all yet. Maybe I'll throw it into those upcoming Ettins or something.

Oh look, major changes on the mage part of my split personality. The big uglies dropped nothing, but the last monster on 28 dropped Mordencainen's book featuring tp_other for 6 mana. First monster on 29 was Ulfang who dropped a wand of Acid ball and a book chest with Odiluke's book. That one has create missile to create some ammo for the type of shooter you are currently using for 15 mana. Nice for some leftover mana at the end of the level. Next room, sitting on the floor was raals. For 20SP I get healing and Mana Storm, the first with 2fail, the second with 100fail. Also in that book is protection from evil, detection, goi and teleport_self.

Useful rings are getting more common. I changed the accuracy ring for +13 damage while leaving a +4 dex one on the floor.

Does the %damage increase the branded damage or only base dice? Is it
2d5 * 3brand * 4.2bonus * 3.1blows or
2d5 * 7.2bonus * 3.1blows ?!?

Inventory is full of course. Next things to throw away will likely be the wand of fire bolts (ball does more damage for the same mana) and book 3 (I only use mana bolt from that one, and I have a wand for that)

Hmm is it intended for Mana Potions to only restore 84 of my 420 mana (~20%) ?!?

Ah, I wondered when you'd start finding the tier 3 books. Yes Mordenkainen's is a lifesaver with Teleport Other.

And Raal's as well! Lucky. Though not clear whether you'll ever get Mana Storm to an acceptable failure late.

Damage calculation is
(base damage x (bonus + brand + slay) x n.blows).
So brands are good, but a very light weapon is unlikely to be worth using even if it has a brand.

Mana potions - yes I am afraid this is intentional!

Found amu of luck +5 from a big guy nest. Two levels later a dragon pit dies to my new Gondolin Halbert. Accidently destroyed a Talisman of Lore without even checking what it does. Also found 4 Artifact weapons in the pit. Totilla is nice, but my weapon holds free action and resDark...

Are those tier 3 books indestructable or only "almost" indestructable like the other ones?

Finished 37 and another dragon nest. Found +5 speed ring and a PseudoDSM with ESP. Kaflax dropped the first randart, a shortbow with free action. Not sure if I should switch weapons now. Also not sure which of the 4 rings I should use.

Wear =spd & =dmg, keep =Rpoison for when you need it. Ditch the con ring, especially if you are doing much meleeing, because +dmg is a much more efficient way of increasing combat performance than +con. A handful of extra hp total or a handful of extra -enemyhp _every_ attack is just no contest.

Nice supply of !spd/!heal, but maybe think about hanging onto the next lot of !CCW that you find? You can still get blinded, so it would be a shame to have to 'q' a !heal to deal with it if it happens at a bad time. You never know how many heals in a row you will need.

Some weird shit printing in your dump there, huh - look above/below cflags.

5 more clevs and just over 1/4 dungeon to go - good luck!

I've thrown away my !ccw because I was lacking room. There aren't all that many monsters left that can hit to blind with only 50dlvls to go. With res l&d I rate my chance to get blindness locked very low.

The weird characters in my dump are because I use oldtiles I think.

Guess I'll got with what you said for rings. It's just that I am getting into areas where 485hp sounds so much safer than 417.

I guess it is a good thing that my one ?*destruction* and one ?m_ban were destroyed. I have no idea where I would store those..

Talisman of Lore gives you reduced cost on Identify, *Identify* and Mass Identify.

All the books are 'almost indestructable' so watch out with big fire breathers.

You might find RPoison is not as important in Ironband as it is in V - since poison breathers do less damage in the first big hit and more over the successive rounds.

Nice halberd - not sure that it's end game quality though.

Kelek's with Haste and Resistance. Also has Rift that I won't have to use now that the double talismaned manastorm is down to 10% @ 13 mana, even lower with an int ring on. Also found Gurthang and got rid of my other weapons. Got rid of my attack wands.

Waldern just happened to get generated between myself and my scrolls so I had to use yet another !r_mana. Need to restock those somehow. Maybe level42 will hold the answer to that question. That dragon pit i detected might just be the place to go.

Next dump will be dead or after the 49 boss :) Haven't spoiled myself on the last two...

I reckon you're end game strong now that you've set yourself up with Mana Storm.

Have you been quaffing potions to end up with stats like those?

Watch out cos the dungeon gets a lot more dangerous below here. 2500' is more like 3500' in V.

I quaffed all Stealth->Cons and Perception->Agi potions I found, about 3 of each type. I also once used Int->?!? earlier in the game.

So... well whatever one more update before the final two. Found several intresting items including Thranduil and Thorin on 43 because of two lesser vaults, yet another dragon pit and some random bosses but it didn't fit together. So I dropped all that wasn't absolutely necessary and carried down Artifacts. Found the robe on 44, but it still didn't fit. 45 had Saruman in a lesser vault and I manastormed him down for 12 excellent items. Amras was just what I needed and now everything fits perfectly together. The weapon slot is free for whatever drops during the next 3 levels. Or I might put on a big +wisdom amulet if I should find one for even more manastorming

Winna :)

Witchking dropped Cambeleg which round up my Morgoth ready equipment. =res_nether would have been nice to have, especially since I didn't melee against him. But as I didn't find one in the late game, he kept ray of deathing me for >300 damage while I fed him mana storms.

Well, congrats.

Not only did you win first time through - but looking at your kit, you've still got quite a few consumables left. That suggests the mid to late game is too easy. Probably calibrated for my relatively inferior *banding skills :)

Any thoughts, especially on balance, but anything appreciated?

Well done! Not too detract from your win, but yes, I think Ironband is a bit on the easy side. Obviously it shouldn't be as hard as a win in Ironman mode in say S (anyone had a go a that?) because it should be a winnable variant, but needs beefing up a bit.

Early game is obviously a bit hard for non-ironmanners, so I would leave that alone. I think a big problem is too much character power, after all its not hard to use magic, shooting and melee with any character. While the SP system is great, meaning you use less spells on the whole floor in total it does mean you can cast more spells back to back against a single pit or unique a lot more easily.

Matthias, did you remember having a problem with any of the mid-game uniques at all? I'm guessing not. I don't think you need to "flee downwards" often enough, Antoine - being chased of the floor by an OOD unique is a staple of mid-game Ironman for me...

Anyway, well done Matthias! Suppose I need to win this now...

I can more or less second what daven_26d1 said. I love the SP system. Beginning is hard but once you get started you won't have too many problems; If, big if, you find the right equipment. I fear that most characters will develop into master of all trades characters with the current system. My manastorming 0% fail heal warrior definitely was...

I had to run twice, once from Waldern and once from Ar-Pharazôn.
The first because he was created way OOD at that time and has some sick offense, and the second because I was out of mana and didn't want to spend potions. My scared self also teleported away the mouth of Sauron. But then again, I never kill that one in a normal game. I also didn't fight 10+ headed hydras and left some Master mystics alone (killed 4).

For now I would wait with changing anything for two or three more winners to see if their characters are different from mine..

Cool, thanks for all the comments guys.

I am working on the next release, though I won't actually send anything out until a couple of more winners, as you suggest [unless anyone finds a crash bug].

Currently done some small bug fixes and interface tweaks, but I think the main thrust of the changes is likely to be making the @ less powerful in the mid to late game -
- less good items and particularly less arts
- more XP per level
- some spells cost more
- chest drops a bit less generous
- *Healing* potions and the higher spellbooks harder to find
- replace ] and = of Speed with 'of Agility' and smaller bonus
- etc etc.

OK Matthias, we both produced an easy effort with HE race, and TBH I only died becuase the game wasn't keeping me on my toes. I therefore (in the name of playtesting, of course) challenge you to a ladder contest with the following:

1- smart_cheat and adult_force_small_lev options set

2- no Dunadan, High Elves, or Dwarves.

Up for it? ;)
