The great eagle currently residing in a capture ball is +24 speed, and is usually the first mount I usually go for. I usually wait until clvl 26-30 before I even start to think of using a mount.

Now I'm on my 2nd preferred mount, which is a Steel Dragon. The Steel Dragon is what made the Cloning Pits so easy. Not so easy necessarily to get one, but once you have one, and have at least halfway-through-Skilled riding, the good times start.
My particular specimen is +16 speed, which is very respectable for a Steel Dragon. Don't forget that Staff or Rod of Probing when hunting for a good mount!

The Shadow-Fairy, unfortunately, has horrid hit dice, and I'm desperately hunting for potions of new life, as my max con is 18/80 with a life rating of 88/100. Ugh. I imagine this will soak up some real playtime.

For the time being, this kit is working out quite well. I managed to get Sting quite quickly because of a blue dragon scale mail I found pretty early--surprisingly, the breath only took off around 4 stars off the Logrus Master in the preceding quest, but that allowed me to finish him in short order. Robin Hood and Fingolfin came from the Cloning Pits, as did Merry, Thingol, and Wrath. As Chaos Brand is now actually desirable, I might try to wield Wrath at some point. I met the real Gachapin in the Dragon Caves shortly after finishing the Cloning Pits, and he dropped Runespear, which is quite a fine weapon. For now though, I'm sticking with sting to milk every last HP I can.

It turns out that Razorback had one big disadvantage for Imm Electricity--it weighs 50 lbs, and my mana was down to 140, which is hardly game-ending, but not fun to deal with either.

It took quite a while (by my standards, anyway) to find Narya and Nenya. Lots of dead Ultimate Magi (and some close calls against them too) to find them. Also, GWoP blew a few away with breaths before I was able to kill them ;)


For the Serpent battle, I was riding on my trusty +28 speed GWoP, and brought along my +19 one in its capture ball. Just as the Serpent popped into view, I released Mr. +19, and allowed summons. What followed was quite a mess of dragons (including more GWoP) and countersummons by the Serpent, one of which included Morgoth.

Despite the horde of extremely powerful beings now at my side, I got knocked to the double digit HPs 3-4 times. Cyberdemons, Black Reavers, etc made the fight pretty hairy. Not to mention my rather poor armor class for melee against the Serpent. I had 2 potions of invulnerability--one from turn-ins, and one I was lucky enough to find on the ground. They helped immensely when I had the Serpent in a good spot between GWoPs, but with Cyberdemons and Black Reavers stalking the periphery.

My melee didn't do much to the Serpent, but fortunately, the breaths of my posse did the majority of the work. Now, I felt this was justified given the effort I spent finding appropriate gear and consumables to even dream of riding a mighty great wyrm of power.

All in all, loads of fun, and unless you die from bashing your head against the wall trying to get immnuities, well worth it.

As icing on the cake, I went for the Metal Babble, and got the Lucky Stab (tm) with the needle on the 2nd try. This was a very low percentage proposition, but with Dimension Door, I had a few chances against it, and luck was VERY much with me this time. Probably the other 5-6 trump casters I tried this with were defeated handily, but were able to get at least one needle attempt in.

*TRUEWINNER* baby. Too bad the post doesn't show it :)
