Here's my guide to spamming a Blue Mage start.

[1] You need Magic Missile ASAP. If you can't melee, you are basically hopeless as a Blue Mage since you start with *no* offense other than your wand of magic missile which won't carry you far. There is nothing to learn from early on, and you will quickly be helpless. The only way to start IMO is to go to the wilderness and find one of a Novice Mage, Novice Archer, Novice Priest, or Novice Paladin. Learn Magic Missile for best results.

[2] Having learned Magic Missile, you may now do the Thieves Quest. Your starting wand is often not enough firepower for this quest, which is why you need to learn magic missile first.

[3] Buy a digger and treasure detection. Dig and then buy as much Phase Door and Teleport as humanly possible!

[4] Go to the shallow water and look for monsters to teach you stuff. Ooze Elementals are good for Acid Bolts and Acid Balls and you can tick them off with your magic missile to encourage spellcasting. But you better level up a bit first. Find Water Trolls and Eldraks, missile them, lure them into the forest, and then use shoot and scoot with your enormous stash of Phase Door.

[5] You can also learn Frost Balls and Summon Monster from Ogre Magi. If you are brave, you can learn stuff from hydras, but it is best to leave them alone, especially if you don't double resist!

Spamming the Wilderness is the quickest way to get a startable Blue Mage, but it is risky. This is like my 4th take, as I kept dying to hydras. 7 headed hydras are especially nasty, as they will follow you, blind you, kill you, eat you! So the correct move if you see one too close is to teleport, which is often deadly in the shallow waters.

I meant especially if you don't single resist! Double resist isn't necessary, and I learned Breathe Fire from a 9 headed hydra with minimal risk. Of course, double resist would be better :)

Failed! I finally found my first !Speed, but it was not enough. The problem was 2 packs of Shadow Hounds, a pack of Inertia Hounds, and a pack of Magic Mushrooms, all of which start awake. The Mushrooms quickly blinked into all the adjacent rooms! Eventually, my speed ran out, but not before I got 3 of the chamber swords, Merlin, and Chaos DSM. Sting would have really helped, but its better to still be alive, I guess.

I'm doing the Yeek Cave now. While I can still spell blinded, it is super annoying. Plus, I'd like to be able to learn light and darkness breaths!

Props to Arjen for reminding me of the Bazooker. A single magic missile coaxed a rocket out of the other reluctant rocketeer and I learned on the first try. But disappointing: 84 damage for 30sp and a 43% fail rate. That's only 1.6hp/sp! What a royal letdown, and I've been carrying sound and shards resistance for a long time for precisely this opportunity.

The top of the Anti-melee caves was easier with my staff of speed, but that didn't last long at all. I'll just need to be really cautious and hope for some good luck!

I've learned quite a few useful talents, but fail rates are still prohibitively high on many things (e.g. 48% fail disintegration breath). So, basically I just stick with whichever elemental breath works on my current foe.

I spied Jack but left him alone. Even if I were to learn darkness storm, I won't be able to cast it for a long while, so its better to just wait.

Now, wearing this robe is somewhat foolish, but I'm going to try it anyway. It seems to be my only source of resisting confusion and nether other than rings (which were filled with speed and poison resistance). Also, it allows me to max out con. So far, it has worked well, but don't be surprised if I die soon ;)

2.5 hours with the Robe is probably pushing my luck, and I have finally managed some decent gear. In fact, I now resist everything except blindness, though I need poison from a ring. I still struggle against many foes. Any poison breather (Great Venom Wyrm, Defiler) is out. I finally managed Bramd, but barely since it seems I can't make a single saving throw. I would think a patient blue mage would have a good save, especially at L43 but I am still wildly outclassed everywhere I turn. Probably, I just need to plunk down the required resources for restore mana, resistance and healing, but I'd rather conserve for later in the game. Part of the problem is that the robe forced me to fight from a distance, and the monster revenge code guarantees an immediate high damage breath retaliation (e.g. Mycen dishes out up to 400hp per turn every turn). But now that I have some armor class, perhaps I will fare better if I just get next to my enemy?

I ran into Uriel and tried to learn starburst, but no go. I took 5 or so, but could not learn. Darkness Storm still fails too high and costs too much to use, which is why I need the wizard cloak!

Spell Power is still useful, but I'd probably do better with a ring of mana actually. I'm trying to survive with a 10% fail darkness storm for 42sp but I find that I'm capped at around 4k to 5k damage output, depending on how the fails go. Often, I can fail 5 or 6 in a row still, which is pretty demoralizing. So, I'll just level to 50 but that still leaves me with a 6% fail? Yuk :(
