Trying an Ent this time.

Fighting-mage, this one plays a lot like a Priest of Eru. Maybe I should've gone for less of the dual-school Prayer route and more of the specialization route. Eru worship and Necromancy does seem a bit odd, especially for an Ent...

Have had exceptional luck so far; found *two* pairs of boots of speed. What are the odds.

Still going strong, but just got a quest for Skull druj in Mordor... blecch.

About ready for Gondolin now.

Took care of the druj quest (and another nearly identical druj quest) with Morphic Oils of Spider. Found Sting, but it's not blessed, so it's largely useless to me. I'm still leveling it up a little on the outside chance that it'll get the blessed flag (air realm).

Does Sting sometimes start blessed? The Stings I've seen in various dumps have been blessed surprisingly often.

Hmmm....

Serious bug in Mount Doom; not sure if it's specific to this character or global yet. In any case, it'll make destroying the Ring fiendishly difficult. Maybe I should just cave and wear it.

Not sure about Sting; it's not one of those artifacts that I find every game. I think it has one of those random flags, though, so it wouldn't surprise me if it started blessed.

Sadly, the MtDoom bug isn't specific to this character. It is indeed global and its a serious problem. If you're curious, you can look on the forum or on the Wiki for the MtDoom non-persistence bug.

Character's still alive, but I haven't done much with him recently. Decided to tough it through Mt. Doom and destroy the Ring; it wasn't easy, but the same bug that made it so tough also mysteriously eliminated lots of the greater undead in the final room, so meh.

Killed Sauron there, too, so now it's just the long, long trek through Angband.

Realized that this character has been hanging out doing nothing for, oh, a couple of months, so decided to finish him off.
Toward the end of the game, I found I didn't have much use for potions; my Necromancy and Rods of Healing took care of most of my curative needs, my speed was high enough not to need potions of the same, and my Grow Trees and Lay of Protection took care of the anti-summoning I use Morphic Oils of Spider for. If I had found a junkart of cure insanity, I don't think I would've needed any at all.
Morgy was tougher than usual--his quake attacks messed up my runes, and I couldn't do enough damage to take him out before he got some powerful summons off. So I had to teleport several times and make judicious use of Vampirism.
This character wasn't too powerful. A stronger fighting mage might be made by putting together a race with similarly high HP with Morgoth-worshipping. You'd get a nice Curse spell, damage bonuses from the dark altars, and maybe even Genocide, though you'd probably have to forego some other spell schools.

Very cool. Arms Mimicry is probably a good choice for a melee mage, and it looks like your use of Necromancy for combat healing is working out nicely.

On 12.4.2005 22:08 shtuph@hotmail.com wrote:
Actually, necromancy has been mainly used to clear out nasty zephyr hounds (when I just don't genocide them right off). It is cheaper then my main healing spell, but since Vamprism doesn't work on Undead/demons (which I'm usually fighting), I just use heal (which heals between 500-650 depending on what equipment I'm wearing). So yes, I can tank quite easily while surrounded by just about anything (1 round of combat then one round of healing, etc etc). Vamprism was a lot more useful earlier in the game because I could wield 2 mage staves of power and do about 1500 damage a shot with it (for a mere 15 mana).
