Trying for a low-level melee-character winner. Hence Thunderlord, for the xp penalty; I have also spent a lot of time *not* restoring life levels after experience drains (although running around with the Black Breath I drew the line at!). The basic concept (a corrupted necromancer) ame from one of the wiki Learning competition DitLs; I spent a long time starting characters and getting them corrupted before I managed to luck out on both anti-teleport and the demon set. A *long* time...

...just found both Flare (which will be key for dropping off the One, as I'm not going to wear it) and Trone, which were the two thematic Thunderlord items I wanted. So, off to see a necromancer and head to the endgame... we'll see.

Of course, I forgot to not take princess quests :(. And I fought my way through the Crypt because I wanted Luthien and did not have Flare then. So it's ot going to be quite as low-level as possible.

Still, the basic plan works thus far: buff up, cast demon blade, demon field, and absorb soul, with Curse auto-casting. With wolf and speed potions I almost always get two rounds of melee attacks (and thus Curse) in first, if planned correctly, and that's game over. Nether breaths can be nasty, though, with the current kit.

Well, made it through Angband to 99; currently back down at clvl 34 again thanks to a princess quest for elder vampires :).

The necromancer didn't get a single move. Um, wow? :)

Here, ringy...

Now, all of this relies on being able to re-worship Melkor and hence rebuild Curse efficacy after dropping off the One. If that's not the case...well, then Lowver is going to be rapid toast, probably :).

When, with auto-scum *off*, one emerges to find Uriel/Ancalagon/Polyphemus/Cantoras/the Mouth and Kronos in close proximity... it's a good thing you get the first move :).

Creeping down Mt. Doom. I've managed to get stealth up to Legendary for the trip, but things still wake up at these depths..

Mt. Doom: Sauron brought along the Mouth, the Tarresque, Lungorthin, Gothmog, Vecna, and assorted others. No, thanks...

...I hope it's still possible to find him in Angband! Still, the One is done.

OK, OK, too many comments in one day. Anyway, re-worshipped the Dark One. Dumb but hey. Just got to go slaughter to get piety up a bit - not too much, don't want the xp! - and then down to Angband 99....

On 25.6.2006 17:49 ewan.mcnay@yale.edu wrote:
Hmm.

Sauron is not showing in Angband. If I have to go back to Mt. Doom to kill him off - well, I suspect that's the case, and it's going to be tough, likely fatal, and if not then a source of huge xp. I have spare of the latter to play with, though, at least! Here goes..

On 25.6.2006 19:04 ewan.mcnay@yale.edu wrote:
The new dump is fully buffed, just before taking down Sauron. Lowver got in two rounds of hits, then retreated around the corner and awaited Sauron to allow for him to get another first-hit; Sauron never got an action.

Picked up some xp, though: lured Ankhorakil away, but had to fight through the Tarrasque, Gothmog and Lungorthin (oh, and the Pheonix) to get to Sauron; notables left behind in the vicinity include Carcharoth, Polyphemus, Vecna (out of the immediate zone, thankfully) and so on. Oh, and Angamaite came into the fight. Briefly.

On 25.6.2006 20:51 ewan.mcnay@yale.edu wrote:
Well, I did it - almost. not the lowest level winner; the xp from endgame uniques was too much. But close, and lowest for either melee or destruction of the One.

Morgoth was close - he opened with manastorm, but thankfully then went to melee/summoning; moreover, that initial manastorm got Melkor to summon monsters to my aid, which distracted him for a round! Then, his first summons got Drauglin, but also Treebeard adjacent to me which wasa very nice buffer - and the rest of the area was then filled with jackals. So a few rounds of hit/heal later (you can see that I was pretty low in healing, as a *lot* had been consumed in occasional skirmishes during the hunt for Morgoth), the big P was slowed enough that he was no longer dangerous. Finish off Drauglin, Mass Geno, dismiss Treebeard, and scarper with the loot. The Void? Um, no :). Didn't even both going back to Lothlorien - just quit on the spot, satisfied..
