I must confess that losing my little runt brought a tear to my eye. Why does losing hobbits always hurt so much? And Sauron, oh evil one. You shall pay!!

So, I built this character for the sole purpose of teaching Sauron a lesson. Can he withstand the intervention of the deities? I think not!

Rue the day, Sauron. Rue the day! I'm coming for you ...

Probably the earliest I ever found a Wrath of God! Holy Cow, now all I need to do is stay alive while leveling up.

OK, this is a joke, right? Next trip down Fafner provides me with a backup copy of Wrath of God.

The Ghost of Runt is coming along nicely. I did a happy dance on receiving Cammithrim and I'm pretty darn sure I am the only person in history ever to have done that before (Resist light means my Armageddon spell no longer blinds me). Of course, Celegorm followed about 2 minutes later, and it even comes with resist shards. This sort of makes up for Crimson coming with nether for its second high resistance.

In a show of complete ghostly power, I just took down a great wyrm of law. Without passwall, that would not have been possible.

I don't really need Shiva's boots. For me, they are just a plain old pair of boots of speed +4, which is OK, but hardly awe inspiring. I am tempted by all the excellent drops of the Its and Gachapins, though. But better to wait a bit since I am cruising as things currently stand. I'm tempted to dive to the bottom of the lair and just destruct everything that doesn't suit my fancy.

I wouldn't say the quest was hard, but it wasn't a cake walk either. Look, my best damage is still a 200hp judgment thunder (lightning), which is about 1/3 what any kind of melee character would have to offer at this point. Ah, but CL42 is just around the corner. Heck, I once took out Cyaegha with the Holy Orb, so things aren't that bad.

Things are quicker at the top of the lair ... Should I just scum my way up to CL42?

Well, it took 7.5 hours to garner the 3.6 million xp required to hit CL42 and gain Divine Intervention. Normally, I would not have my 4th book by now and would be forced to tip toe down to DL95 of R'lyeh, armed with stealth and destruction, and hope to luck into a copy. Its so nice not to have to do that :)

So, how big is the power jump? Well, Holy Orb was my principal offense, doing 140hp for 8sp. With my speed, stealth and double resistance, I could generally take down any elemental dragon before it could reach me for melee. Occasionally, I'd need to step things up with a 205hp judgment thunder for 21sp, but only vs hell and venom wyrms.

Now, I have the intervention with 24% fail for 59sp. It does 630 damage at the moment (on its way up to 750 at CL50), heals me 100hp, and generally puts my opponent into suspended animation. Not always, but pretty reliably (uniques are immune to this, of course). So, elemental dragons do not require haste or even double resistance! Just a handful of interventions will do the trick!

The fail rate is still way too high. Let me get it down a bit, and then I'll go for the Old Castle and Indra. I just lucked into a +4 con elven cloak, so I can where Shiva's boots at last, I think.

Hmm ... I'm leveling fast for a pure spellcaster, I think. But at this rate, CL50 is probably still 3 or 4 hours off.

OK, so I haven't seen Narse all game. I've been in the Dragon's Lair for about 7 hours of game play. So he's a quest monster, right? Nope, there he is at last. And he dropped something else that's been a long time coming: Laputa. So, with enough Int at last, I can swap out the boots of the wizard for some more speed.

Lack of blindness resistance has me concerned. I'd like to plug it up with Indra, but I don't want to play without disenchantment resistance. Its hard to keep +14 con, +6 int to max out key stats, and to cover all resistances, and to keep myself hasty and unencumbered.

Patience ...

I figured playing without blindness resistance was pure folly, so I did the Old Castle. I went in with +19 speed and 741hp. I came out with +8 speed and 731hp (or +15 speed and 630hp ... the latter is way too low for my depth!) But at least I can see now! The culprit? Colluin. Geez. At least it could give +4 con in addition to double resistance.

So, I'm playing slow, but with as many hp as possible. It seems that even little Runt Ghosts have puny hit point totals! But now, I finally cover all resistances having just cleared an ancient dragon pit (Ice, Bile, AMHD, Bone) and picking up a second 'Tome of Intelligence' with +4 Int/Con. This one was on a set of gold dragon scale mail, though, and gives me that missing sound resistance.

Down to 12% fail on Divine Intervention! And still looking for that first ring of speed in the dungeon (I bought the one I am wearing from the BM).

This guy's dead. I think I have pretty sloppy game mechanics, or I was just bored or something. Anyway, I'm rounding the corner to take on Fangorn's evil twin (I forget his name) when tombstone! There were no monsters around, I received no warning ... just dead in the blink of an eye.

Anyway, I reconstructed what must have happened from the messages (quick start a new character). Apparently an off screen master Q summoned ancient dragons, which I attacked for a turn (I did? I don't recall doing that!) and then two of them breathed me down to -195 hp from full.

So how could it be that I missed all of that. I mean, I never even saw dragons appear next to me, and if I did, I would have just cast my 0% destruction. I was on autopilot, to be sure, and the only thing I can think is that I was pressing arrow keys too fast for the game to catch up or I was just holding down the arrow key ... I can't remember (Passwall characters can't run with shift arrows ... I know if you are running and monsters appear, the run command will stop. If you are holding down the arrow key and monsters appear you just die before you can release the key?).

Well, I burned Hengband off my system after that, killing all my other outstanding characters apparently. But now I want to play again. Why is that? :)

Yeah, I've had more than a few characters die to lazy fingering as well. Really, the only way to deal with that is to have enough melee damage that you never need to press down on an arrow to kill things!

Actually, I think I use the Escape key too much as well. Most of my macros begin with \e. Example, \e*tmaa for a starting magic missile. Why? Well, the game throws too many silly messages at you! Also, during melee, sometimes I alternate arrow and escape for attack and "what ever, let's move things along". When you use the escape, all messages are simply discarded (including, say, "***LOW HITPOINT WARNING***") meaning you never see 'em. Personally, I think the low hitpoint warning deserves as special character sequence to discard (much like the suicide request, which I frequently type by mistake!). There's just no way you should be able to miss it ... even if you hit escape by mistake or out of habit cuz you're not paying attention! Its too easy to die in a single round in hengband as it is ...

Alternatively, just don't play for umpty consecutive hours ;)
