Some day I'll manage to win one of these guys ... Probably not today, though. Where are all the hitpoints?

Anyway:
c) The Short Bow of Changes (x2) (+3,+19) {CfNxCaDi}
Activates for Call Chaos every 350 turns.
Holy Cow!! And to think I wanted Robin Hood's bow. It came from clearing an orc pit which was also good for building melee skill with Sting. Tourists can master everything, but you don't gain any skill fighting "weaker" opponents, and unfortunately, most "weaker" opponents are actually deadly face to face! But a bunch of Ogrillons added +12 to hit ... I'm still "Unskilled" though.

Oh, my. Is this guy dual wielding? Yup! The unfortunate thing is that there seems to be a cap on skill at 'Beginner' for dual wielding for my current level. And I'm so close to CL25 where I would guess this cap to lift a bit. Still, I can become an 'Expert' on weapons, so I'll need to focus on using those with end game significance.

And there are other ways to abuse a Lucky personality aside from farming quartz veins for gold then town scumming (I'm still trying to do that, but stumbled on to my current tactical advantage).

No challenge ... I'm playing just for yuks! I just learned the following:

Now I understand the low hp :-P That's it, I'm keeping up my current tactics until a New Life shows up!

Well, I don't think I am going to get my New Life. It is a DL30 object of rarity 8, so I would expect it to be possible. I've gotten at least 10 stat potions and at least 20 high spellbooks. Maybe a dozen morgul weapons (I'm squelching now), 2 boots of slowness and boots of annoyance. Positives are Celegorm, Thranduil and now Hithlomir. Maybe I'll hang on for Cambeleg? And New Life? C'mon RNG ...

This is getting a bit silly :) I finally squelch everything and use macros to speed up the slaughter. 3 !Experience means I now can *id*, and that is essential. I'm a bit slow at the moment, but that is actually quite useful!!

I'm not stopping until I get New Life, dammit!!! :)

On 26.1.2010 23:41 chris wrote:
[CL28:Tower] 05:12
Ooops ... I accidentally killed them all. That's what happens when you use macros aggressively, I guess. No New Life ... sigh. And once my speed got below -20 the monsters started to get the upper hand. They could not damage me, but their strategy was apparently to keep my mana pegged at 0 until I starved. A noble, but failed attempt!

So what to keep? There are about 30 artifacts on the floor ...

On 26.1.2010 23:52 chris wrote:
OK, here is what I am keeping. I have enough fire power and resistance for the top of the Dragon's Lair, if not enough hitpoints. Probably I will townscum to spend my 1.1 million gp in a vain quest for New Life first. I can double resist, and I even have healing, so maybe I can survive? We'll see ...

That was a much more pleasant way to handle stat gain. It sure beats the normal dungeon approach which takes 10x longer. And town scumming is boring. Plus, I had a shot at uber artifacts, but the best I could manage was Jack's cloak (Pretty darn good!)

Tourists are so powerful :)

How do you always get so many !oHealing and !oRestoreMana this early in the game? Even if I town scum, the most I'll get is maybe 10 of each. You're too low level to cast Clairvoyance and you don't have the Jewel, and you're only 5 hours in (with a Tourist).

You must have some trick for getting your 50+ !oHealing and 25+ !oRestoreMana that you're not sharing :-P

On 27.1.2010 02:58 chris wrote:
I do indeed have a new trick. Its pretty scummy, but the RNG made me do it by being scummy itself with my initial life.

Question: What monster breeds and drops objects? Answer: The Black Ooze. Go get 'em :) Macros and squelching were what made it really sick. In about 30 minutes I killed Oh, 40,000 of them (the game stops counting at about 32k) and probably that is where I got 40 or so !Healing. Also, I got the 50-60 stat potions necessary to nearly max out my stats. 27 artifacts. But not a single New Life, which was all I wanted.

So then I town scummed for New Life and actually got one. But my con stayed put on 18/80 and life rating in the 90's. Another 10 days of scumming and there's another! Wahoo. 18/80 con 95% life. OK, they must be more common then I thought. Nope. 320 more days of boring town scumming without a single sighting :( I guess I'll just have to conquer the mountain, but that is fairly hard for a tourist.

On 27.1.2010 03:51 chris wrote:

OK, I'm going for the Mountain after a complete domination of the Cloning Pits. I think I am powerful enough, but those birds are tough and I have no antisummoning or line of sight control options here.

I'm 463hp at CL38. I could be 600hp if I had a decent life ... But what will I do when I get screwed again? Town scum for 2,000 days? No way.

Hp before = 463.
Hp after = 597.
Life Rating: 101%. Staggeringly high! Probably the 95th percentile for me :)
Con: 18/120. That +4 con really really helps.
Str: 18/110. That's just gravy.

OK. I'm done town scumming at last ...

PYEC! PWOW! Pretty easy actually. I went in single wielding with my Genji gloves for a high AC of 163. Turns out I didn't need the high AC, as I was able to confuse the Greater Titans. The hardest parts were the Raal's, which were all awake and cost me 2 !healing, and a Nycademon who destroyed all my favorite hiding spots forcing me to fight titans in the open.

I'll switch to my gloves of power now. The glory of genji fades beside the glow of the express card!

Gothmog is down!! GCV on the top of the lair and I am thinking Yay! Goodies. 5d5 long sword. Yipee!

Worpal of course, and what the heck is bashing down walls heading straight for me? Destroyer? Nope, its Gothmog, and I teleport him away before really noticing that he was down to 2 stars. Apparently, he got into a tussle with Raphael, and I smelled opportunity. Even so, it was close. I had to drain all my charges to fight him (so no healing though I notice now looking at my dump that I must have picked up a !*Healing* somewhere). He summoned some nasties including a Warp Demon and a Nightwalker.

Now I need to abandon the vault. Apparently, the one class that can get the PYEC lacks the requisite skills to activate it. It took me 30 attempts to get back 1 charge of speed, and that is a bit too many keystrokes. So without my _Healing, I can not get past Ulik the Troll or Jisisl who guard fairly early squares on both entrances. Maybe I'll start carrying _*Destruction* ...

Killing Amberites without Shards resistance is just plain stupid. But I always take risks when it comes to Brand and Dworkin. Almost, they were too powerful for me to even kill! Brand was a blinking machine and never stayed next to me for more than a turn. Good strategy too, because my speed and double resistance kept wearing off, and it costs like 80sp to recast stuff. I finally got him, even though he tried hiding inside a swarm of quantum dots. And look! Yay! He dropped a crossbow. It was only (3x) though and got squelched. No curse.

Dworkin blinks less often, but hits to terrify. I found this out when he was down to 2 stars. Where is my heroism? At home, since I thought I no longer needed it. Sigh. Eventually I recovered my courage and killed him as well. No Curse. And a Jewel. This time, it was the real thing rather than a look alike!

So now I need to think strategy with this guy. Eibra the Water dragon nearly killed me despite double acid resistance and +18 speed at the time. His mind blast kept working, and he was damaging me faster than I could heal. Being blinded, teleport was not an option. I probably should have *destructed*, but I managed to get him at last. And Ancalagon remains untouchable, though summoning Tiamat and horde is a low down dirty trick. My point is, with straight melee, I'm not so effective. I have the Jewel and I have Legendary[15] stealth. I have 1 -Rockets and 2 -Disintegrate. Maybe I should go that route instead?

On 27.1.2010 23:09 kingvictory2003 wrote:
I've found that good melee power is by far the smoothest way to roll as a Tourist. Either that or an absurdly powerful bow, but I always like to have inventory space available for those GCVs or other essentials to stockpile (pots of *healing*, life, ? of destruction etc.). I would think strongly about using Nain as your primary weapon, as it would cover rdark and rdisenchant, leaving you with more options amulet-wise. Your stealth is awesome enough without pitch dark night. The damage on Nain is very respectable as well, considering its damage dice and acid brand. Hopefully you find Crimson soon to patch up rNether.

Something I'd probably do if I were playing this character is scum the top of the Mine for easily killed good drop monsters (great elemental wyrms). I usually have a decent yield for time spent killing suchlike, with the depth of 3750 ft. Taratol make great storm wyrms laughable, and Nain again would make dragon smashing a relatively easy proposition given your hp and double resist capability.

Good luck, here's hoping for a resounding victory!

Its been a while since I've used the Mine ... Its really really scary. Just when I was starting to get bolder, and decided to take on that fat, juicy, tasty, sweet, yummy bile wyrm, even though I could see a freakin' pissed of shambler barreling down towards me, I nearly died. Double Lightning resist. Pshaw, says the Shambler. I'll just double breathe! Teleport him away, and he picks a fight with Walken who is Evil and Good, I think, and Walken breathes disintegration at me! What did I ever do to him? Shambler back in line of sight. Well, I pulled my panic button at that point ...

Excalibur and this rand-art armor have been all I've gotten so far of note. I would think Crimson common at this depth, so I will hang on ...

The Invisible Pink Unicorn remains my all time favorite monster in any *band. So warm and cuddly. And I got Brand too! OK, I'd prefer Crimson, but this will do for the time being. Amber from something inconsequential, but I still struggle with Poison, Sound and Nether resists. Nain is a solid lock now, since it is also my only source of Acid, so 3 key resistances from my weapon. Even Aglarang stays at home ... right next to Excalibur.

Tulkas and Crimson, please. I'll wait!

I'm getting it handed to me, to say the least. Sneak up on the Yamata-no-orochi. +44 speed. Double resist. Attack. It breathes. Yikes, I'm down to 300hp. Panic and *destruct*. I fail. It breathes. Fortunately, while it can kill me with just 2 breaths, it picked the wrong 2. Down to 100hp. *Destruct*. OK, it worked this time. That was my only failure on *destruction* all game, and I am using it a lot at the top of the mine.

After that, I decided 700hp was way too low (without my new life, I would only have 500!). So, I swapped a +4 con ring for my +9 speed ring, and am much happier now :)

I finally killed Gerard. He's not hard to kill, but his blood curse inspires terror. I got the full gamut of nastiness, but the only summon was an unruly horse, which I quickly dispatched. In the loot was an "Resistance with poison and sound, but now I just picked up Caspanion with nether! Maxxed out con now, and maybe I can go back to my +9 speed ring. I'm also tempted to play without Sound for a bit longer ... I need every melee boost I can get!

Recent developments:
[1] I finally lost my _Healing when I was too lazy to cast my 4 double resistance spells vs Bleys, who fireballed me. I must have gotten 100+ charges out of that one staff, so probably I should go get another?

[2] I'm a Vampire. Turned to Stone by Dio's mask. Poison, Darkness, Sound, Nether and Disenchantment are all proving hard resistances to get. The racial change gives 3 out of those (Though I still use Caspanion for the +3 Int and Con). Also, it rerolls you life rating, and I gained 50hp in the deal. Sweet. But now I need to watch my Dex ... Its a bit low!

[3] Enough of the Mine. I used it to hunt uniques, and only 3 remain: Wounded Bear, It and Bahamut. Time to make my Angband depth respectable.

[4] No other class gobbles healing like this one. I used 9 potions my last trip down. Even Iketa the Brave took 3 and an activation of Amber. When he turned into Biketal, I didn't need any ... Odd?

[5] Excalibur at last :) Though I am giving up Brand and +10 speed so that I can swap around and get Sound. I'm tired of Nain, too. This after a Fenghuan took me down to 70hp with a sound breath. Yikes!

So I am back down to double digit potions of healing (99). But I think I will need most of them for the high level uniques. The Destroyer is worth at least 60 ...

Ahhhh! Shucks! I should have stayed in elf form. There's Lohengrin, which is a suit of Vampire Dragon Scale Mail as far as I am concerned. Darn! Well, maybe I will find Shiva's armor?

Anyway, I hunt Habu, but got waylaid by a major vault (That had Lohengin!). So far, I took out Tulscha when a nearby vibration hound breathed at me and stunned him. Only took 3 !Healing and Amber that way. Also on board is Pazuzu, so chalk me up for another 4 or 5 healing. I need to leave a handful for Habu as well ... I was hoping an excellent longbow sighting would prove to be Belthronding, but no such luck.

I need to start recalling with 20 !Healing in tow. 15 is cutting it way too close.

Destroyer for DL88 quest ... Ah ... No thanks!

Having both Lohengrin and Amber available for every unique battle is completely amazing. Its like two source of renewable *Healing* (well, only 777 and 700 respectively, but when you only have 874 hp, that is the same as a 1200hp !*Healing*). Shub-Niggurath, for example, was handled with just those two activations.

After every battle, I rest until they recharge :)

That will be my last tourist attempt for a loooong time. Man was the end game tedious. In the final analysis, I simply had too few hitpoints. I couldn't see wasting a !Healing for only 220hp and if you play him that way, you never attack, and never damage him. Plus, I thought my +47 speed would be fast enough. It wasn't ...

Victor, you are a true champion to win with one of these guys :)

Just pure bad luck hits us all, and in Hengband, probably more often than most other variants.

Looks like you did very well in general, with very respectable damage output and a good stock of items. Can't say there was anything I'd have changed in your approach. When I played my Tourist, I picked Half-Giant on purpose because shards is often such a b*tch to cover, and for the high hit dice. The highly discounted racial Stone to Mud was also a very welcome addition to the arsenal.

+47 speed was definitely enough in my opinion, since I fought the Serpent without such speed, and yeah, a double oberon move with such damaging abilities is just disheartening. I actually lost a really good tourist to Pazuzu after double mana bolts when I thought the PYEC granted reflection. That's when I learned that it didn't ;)

Next one for you will be a win, I bet!

On 30.1.2010 15:09 chris wrote:
I'm not going to badmouth the PYEC or anything, but it does make covering resistances harder since it grants none and sits in your shield slot, where you might want to put Thorin or something.

Half Giants are a good choice, but aren't very stealthy. In fact, I'm amazed your tourist wasn't a Shadow Fairy or something :)

In line for my next tourist attempt (several years from now, mind you):
[1] Android. A repeat, I know, but there's nothing quite like equipping that PYEC and rocketing up levels.

[2] Balrog. They can eat, but it takes a while for Satisfy Hunger to become reliable. Probably need to stockpile corpses in the town, though I've managed to generate them fast enough before ...

[3] Golem. I love the high AC.

The only reason I went with Lucky High Elf, in fact, the only reason I ever do, is because I want to play a "baby archer". High Elves get what, +25 shooting skill, and lucky adds +15. So even if your class can't shoot, you can. But somehow, it never works out for me. Good shooters ... heck mediocre shooters are extremely rare, and once I get past the utility of my initial town enchanted (+9,+9) crossbow, I end up meleeing 10x more effectively. Even as a Trump High Mage ... I really wish that would change.

Well, time for a break, I think. Best wishes to all ...
