This run has been a bit frustrating. Although I've found pretty good stuff this early (including what seems to be a quite nice randart light source), my cunning plan to dive deep into Redfang to quickly find a -o+/>detect has failed miserably. In fact, the only rod I've found is treasure detection.

I still intend to clear as many dungeons that I can, though I really wanted to get my hands on that rod first. However, the shops have also not been giving me recall scrolls, for a double grrrr experience. Considering rebasing in Bree and either doing a quick run at the marshes or try to take advantage of the small weathertop levels to find that $*%# rod.

I found a -detect stairs almost immediately after the last post by doing a crazy run at Weathertop. Then, it was off to the races, doing all the <30 dungeons. There have been many touch and go moments-- the end of Moria was dicey, and the spider in mirkwood gave me fits. Also, I ran low of !oCCW just before taking on the end of Mirkwood, so spent some time working out in the 30's in redfang.

Equipment isn't great, but will press on anyway. I managed to finish Mirkwood with lots of sharp stuff, will see if Ulbandi reacts similarly. Then will take on Isenguard, and Edoras if I have a map. Might even try a foray on Weathertop (though probably shouldn't).

Just wanted to make a note:

I just found Taratol again (I'll get around to posting that update later), and it was 20lb. in weight. Later, when I save the game, exit, and reload, it is now 6lb. in weight. I remember seeing something similar happen in my last major run (the one that got Smaug, prob. not coincidentally using taratol). This sounds like a fairly rare bug to me.

OK, got Ulbandi, and now making a charge up a pre-war Isenguard. One question-- Ulbandi dropped an armor of resistance, which I assumed covered the basic resistances. However, the item description and the resist screen isn't showing it, and the item doesn't say that there might be unknown attributes. Can I assume that it actually has the basic resists?

About the armor of resistance question-- never mind. I *ID* it, and see the deal.

OK, cleared out all of the major dungeons in the original setup. I have a cunning plan against Smaug that isn't simply hit-him-with-a-large-blunt-object, but it will take some set up and I may very well revert to the less subtle plan.

About FA (from prev. character)-- I did find !oFA useful when I could find them, before I had FA. However, even then that is pretty suboptimal-- you have to use it before they paralyze you, which means that you have to know in advance what will paralyze you. Also, it is less helpful against spell casters as there are many that can cast paralyze, infrequently, and you'd end up going through all your potions to quickly. Mainly, I hope to get it before the barrows as an alternative to armor FA, but that's only really worked out once.

Upgraded to 0.6.3a. Noticed that the sharp stuff that I accumulated isn't as useful-- will need to find new thrown stuff, though I'm a bit worried about how I'll get the weight to carry them. Probably need to be more selective about the sharpies.

Smaug was a tense battle-- I forgot to bring magic mapping, and by the time I established where he was, he had a posse of ~7 ancient dragons. In casing the joint, I ran into a pod of four of them, and needed to use a !oHealing and 2 !oCMortalW to insure survival, which is pretty scary for me. When I did isolate Smaug, I amped completely up. Smaug himself wasn't so bad-- was able to use CCW to keep from dipping more than 300 hp from max, which amped up is over 1000.

Found a ton of bags, which I am going to need to sort through. I decided to leave a couple (lesser runes, poisons, harmful mushrooms) on the ground but may still need to leave some at home, like maps, scrying, and elements if just for the weight concerns.

Went for the Caradhras mountains, and it was quite frustrating. I was going toe to toe with Caradhras, which wasn't that pleasant but seemed doable, when he all of a sudden earthquakes and disappears. I couldn't find him again on that level. Is that intentional?

In any case, I doubt I can dreg up enough distance damage to take him, which means I'll have to pass on that one.

Concerning early FA: the jewel shop in Edoras generally has rings of FA. Since you can get there relative savely (Edoras is DL 8) without fighting a guardian, I never found FA to be a problem early on.

I suspect that there is no boss to clear in the Temple of Elemental Evil, and no way to emerge victorious/clear. Delving there did yield lots of goodies. Now need to decide what sort of crazy dangerous quest to do-- decided against Hornsberg, since it must be done in one pass and seems to destroy Edoras, which among other things turn off the Paths of the Dead. It is possible though that Isenguard will do that. Only one way to find out I suppose.

Leaning towards Isenguard though to be honest that scares the bejesus out of me.

Well, Isenguard isn't really working out...

I had climbed towards the top, and prepared to go after Grima, who I assumed would be on the top (sort of like how Smaug can be found in two different places, right?). I didn't expect to see Saruman. Decided to trade blows-- really bad idea, as he stripped my buffs. Somehow, in the process, what with him flinging spells at me, he somehow disappeared-- I had set up doors all around me (to deal with his summons), he cast a hellstorm fireball at me, all the doors got torched (missed that one), I got a message that he was trapped in fire, and he disappeared from my telepathy screen. Very odd, but somehow I don't really mind :)

The Watcher is looking really good right now.

Andrew-- Didn't know about resist stacking. That does change things... Really tempted to use the serpent ring now, though I really really need the spell resistance too. May be a little while for an update (although I managed to get the shadow of caradhas, I decided that I can take him on minimally buffed, and so could deal with one of his vanishing acts.

FYI - Stacking is geometric (1/2 damage for the 1st resist, 1/3 damage for the 2nd etc.)

OK, I lied. After knocking down Caradhas, I wanted to get revenge on the Watcher. Revenge achived.

I think I don't quite get is why I don't seem to have unlocked a new area by taking down West Moria. I'll try approaching East Moria from Dale, but I thought that taking out the Watcher would have allowed me direct access to that zone from West Moria.

I've also got to Lothlorien from the bottom of the blizzard board, but can't get there again over land. I'll try getting back to the bottom of Caradhas to get there and further onward.

Probably last posting before I compile the new version, though I may get impatient and press on.

Got back to Lothlorien through recalling back to the peak of Caradhras and descending stairs on level 40. Once on level 40, I fell into a chasm, and this took me to blizzard of Caradhras 41!

After getting back to Lothlorien, I cleared Parth Galen and the Dead Marshes. I assume that Ithilien leads back to the Angmar/Morgoth path so I *probably* won't go down that path for a little while yet. I assume that going there won't remove existing zones so I can use my trusty set of maps to return to the main region of the map.

I will probably head off to the Siege of Hornberg, as I just don't think I have what it takes to do Isenguard. Last time, the siege removed Edoras from play-- will it come back later? I'd like to see the paths of the dead sometime, but don't feel ready for it yet. My going in assumption is that Edoras will eventually return or that there will be another path (or map) to the paths of the dead.

Moria has been closed by Balin and won't open for a random Giant ;) You have to find the gates (via map) and face the terrors of deep Khazad-dum to re-open the passage from west to east.

Edoras will be gone for good once you enter Hornburg, but there's a map to the Path of the Dead to be found.

Just a quick update-- took out Wormtongue, which took some doing and really required use of amp potions. I don't think I could have taken him even somewhat safetly without the buffs. Given that Saruman is a bunch meaner and can strip my buffs, will probably hit the siege next (also that feels more in line with the original storyline). It makes me feel better that I'll probably have another chance at the paths of the dead later.

Andrew-- after noodling around on the dev page, I realized that I was out of my depth in trying to compile it myself. If you could at your convenience do a compile, I'd appreciate it. I'm reasonably content to wonder around slaying stuff without it-- the siege should go smoothly soon.

After some scouting expeditions (mainly for !oRestore Life Levels after getting drained by something in Osgiliath after defeating One of the 9 there), I decided to giant up and stride onto Pelennor field with my not-so-sneaky outfit. The 5d9 fire brand and the +3 might helm artifact are certainly nice, though it comes without telepathy, which is a major major major pain. Still, only the best for the witch king.

The axe took out nice bushels of damage from him, though closing the distance on the open fields was hard-- the troops could only provide so much distraction I suppose. I really miss the _oCMortalW, which I blew up earlier (it also blew up a _oSpeed simultaneously-- is this intended behavior? I didn't really care, it was the healing staff that I cared about as haste is easy to acquire. )

Anyway, ding dong the witch king is dead. I'm sort of curious what the Army of the West is, though it definitely warned me before I tried to go there, so I suspect it might blow up some of the existing regions.

I decided to take care of loose ends in the east. I got a little surprise when I stepped on Dol Gulder, and took care of the miscellaneous issues that sprung up. As I had already taken care of the Witch King, I didn't think that the other riders would give me much trouble, and they didn't. Dunland also wasn't too bad. Dol Gulder was though-- in retrospect, I shouldn't have tried for it and I burned a whole lot of resources there, even just to get through the normal monsters. The sorceror certainly was tough even buffed up, and almost died trying to collect all his loot from a couple of ancient dragons and several lesser titans. But Inyare survived.

I think next up is Minas Tirith, or possibly Numenor. I need to figure out whether I can take on the Mouth or not-- right now I'm not feeling it what with the trouble I had with the sorceror.

That's interesting, it seems the windows build and the source package have different dungeon.txt files, the first lacking both Osgiliath an the Army of the West "dungeons".

Minas Tirith was harder than expected-- my damage just wasn't doing that much to him. I'm hoping it is just the fact that the guardian had high AC or some such-- still it was a very grueling combat. Also got near the bottom of the crystal caves for kicks and to find some replacement wands for some that blew up in Minas Tirith.

Been doing some more experiments with runes, trying to use them to get the wands and thrown weapons that I like.

I think I am going to try finally to take on Saruman, mainly with thrown weapons to protect my buffs, but I may give up on that. I took a peak at Numenor and definitely don't want to do that-- slogging through endless water boards isn't my raison d'etre. The way fowards seems to be mainly in the east I suppose, though don't relish dealing with the Mouth.

AC slightly higher than Morgoth, equal to all the forms of Sauron. Nothing else I could find, e.g. no resistance to edged weapons, no HUGE flag that would force you to charge or stand on something...

Several thrilling adventures since the last update.

I made a second go at Saruman, and it was no dice-- still too hard. So tried the Mouth instead.

The Mouth himself wasn't *too* bad. I got him down to 1 star-- then he fled through poisoned water. grrr... Then a metric bushel of zombified drakes (some D that briefed disease) came at me. Burned through a gazillion healing potions to survive that one, teleported a few times to find the mouth, and killed him before some ancient time breathing dragons could get my location.

Then decided to restock potions before my next go at Saruman, so dabbled in a few of the mapped dungeons, getting to Nowhere town a bunch of times from the Crystal Caves. I then found a map to Cirith Ungol and decided to half a look see.

I found that dungeon to be quite easy to work with. Took out both guardians, even Shelob wasn't too too bad.

Then, gianted up and faced down Saruman. It was a truly epic battle, burned through a whole bunhc of speed resources and had to end up duking it out without temp speed. Saruman had a completely frustrating tendency to teleport away once I got him to 3 stars, and I had to continually chase him. He got me to < 50 hp once from a double move, that was a real scare. When I got him to 1 star, he started fleeing by foot. I threw what remains of my thrown weapons, but the git wouldn't die. Finally, a threw a potion of ruination that I found on the level, and that killed him. Seems fitting somehow.

So *finally* I've cleared the express route to Minas Tirith.

Quick note-- I've been finding that for some of the deeper dungeons (crystal caves, blizzard of caradhras, and especially ruins of angmar), I'm hitting bugs that send me to Nowhere town a lot. I believe it is triggered by entering certain levels that have problems, for it occurs immediately upon entering the level and I've experienced it from recall, stairs, and falling down chasms (aka the method of descent does not seem important). It is inconsistent, so I can keep descending without issue.

been having the same thing since I upgraded to .63a. Mainly triggered in Redhorn pass for me, but yes, it felt random. Nowhere town also crashes when you try to enter the map shop too :/. It seems to happen more often if I press something before the level finishes loading, but the length of load is also a lot longer which leads me to believe it's a loop in the dungeon code that is forcing an exit to nowheresville.

Mine has settled down quite a bit since I set up a clean directory for .63a and only copied over the save file. Rebuilt the ini and screen options back from scratch. I'm pretty sure I've had it trigger again since then, but nowhere near as much. I've been saving just before using stairs to try to limit losses.

The end is getting within view now.

After Saruman, I wandered around Morannon a while before realizing that I already have gotten that guardian. Decided to stay a while longer anyway because it has a very nice dungeon layout. Even so, there are some freakishly nasty monsters at those depths. The greater wyrms are all really dangerous, and twice (with ents and minotaur ladies) I ran into new monsters that really beat the *$&@ out of Inyare.

Then tried Paths of the Dead. Yuck. The inability to read maps really really bites. With a little help from some created doors, I was able to get Baldor and escape. Better prepared, I took on the guardian and wrapped that up. A little disappointed that I didn't get to see some corsairs :)

Then I took a quick peek in Minas Morgul, and decided to sally forth into Udun. I knocked out Isen-something-or-other, had a very big dragon in it. Will take out Udun and Gorgoroth before heading to the end game.

About Nowhere Town and saving, there is (or was in 0.6.2) already a back-up savefile (ending with .bkp or something) creating every time you change dungeon. So if you and in Nowhere Town, in the back-up savefile you should see you standing on the stairs just before you made the fatal move and got caught in wild software magic.

Finished the plan. Cleared Gorgoroth and Udun, then It was on.

Scouted out both Barad-dur and Orodruin, and decided that Orodruin was the better candidate. Tip-toed to level 59, which was tricky in that even with a max level character (at the time), there were loads nasties that Inyare couldn't really deal with toe-to-toe. And there were a bunch that he *could* take on but were probably too dangerous.

When I got to 59, Vampire-Sauron showed up pretty quickly. Although he wasn't fire resistant, it was still a terrible match up due to his ability to evade. Next time, I won't bother to fight him in that mode.

After draining about four levels, V-Sauron was only down 2 stars. Fortunately, he switched to his other forms, which even with fire immunity were a lot easier to damage. The battle was tricky as he kept debuffing Inyare and does pretty good damage, but some quality hacking eventually dropped him.

I'll need to rest a bit before giving a full post-mortem. Needless to say, I really enjoyed this variant-- it is very flavorful, what with the Middle Earth tourism sensibility.

First of all, thanks for the applause :)

Post-mortem: This has been a really really fun variant. For me, the big draw was the quest-like zones. There was such a strong flavor from the lord of the rings arc that it really made it interesting to push from zone to zone.

It is really hard to judge the difficulty of the game. On the one hand, the player gets so many advantages, from an inherent speed boost from agility, truly immense hp, bags to hold all the buffs and potions that you can want, and runes to get the egos that you want eventually.

And yet, this warrior didn't dominate the late levels like I am used to in other variants. I think the AC damage reductions that the monsters get is a huge part of this-- I feel in most bands, warriors thrive when they can whack monsters really fast. That just doesn't really seem to happen in U. Even with the 5d9+45 firebrand axe, killing wyrms was a hard slog and things like minotaur lords, ents, the tougher golems, and many of the bigger undead were just not worth fighting.

In some ways, the warrior played a lot like priests in other variants, focused on fighting a war of attrition. That made the tight packed mobs in especially the tower boards quite difficult to face. That combined with much less consistent escape (I found the ?o<>creation to be the best method) can make things tricky.

Still, I feel it was tough but fair, and I think an experienced player of this variant can turn it to a not-so-hard experience. It is just different from the normal 'band experience-- diving is not the answer, and you have to get used to fighting uniques sooner than you expect in V. Still, you get those juicy hp, natural speed boost, and all the potions you can drink.
