Slightly bored with my Time Lord, I decided to fire up a traditional combo: Mindflayer Chaos HM. Fortunately, the RNG smiled on my initial life (18/120 base con ... which is all I care about :) so there is no need to play around with potions of new life this game.

Pretty smooth going early on, and I'm playing with monster quests rather than uniques only. Interesting so far, though I'll be cursing this decision when I get end game quests for umpty Great Wyrms of Power :D

Farmer obliged with Boots of Thievery +2 early in the game. The Mimic's had Hagen, so I was set with +5 speed. With an Esp Evil rand art weapon, and a staff of speed, I decided I was up for the Barrow Downs.

All I can say is "Ouch!" Spell retaliation is brutal! I don't think the odds are as bad as what I experienced, but my first 13 or so Fireballs lobbed into an Emperor Wight provoked a nether bolt response (Odds should be around 60% or so ... I was just unlucky). At 100hp a pop, they really hurt. I polymorphed one of the 8 wights with a chaos bolt, but I killed the other 7, relying on my superior speed (+15). Probably stupid, as I had to teleport away at around 30 hp 3 times or so.

I found the phial inside, so I went off to the DE Lords quest and scored a really nice replacement. I love stealth :)

Back to the Anti-magic cave ...

So much telepathy this game: Crown of Telepathy. Amulet of Telepathy. Rand art with Esp Evil. Thranduil. Too bad I'm playing a Mindflayer ...

Finally, my 3rd book showed up. The upgrade is only slight, as Disintegrate only does 100hp or so. I'm waiting for Magic Rocket at CL36. And in the mean time, I can't really handle a -7 swing on strength, or I'd use that spellpower (30%) sitting at home. All I need are a couple of potions, and I just can't seem to find any.

DL45 is pretty freakin' hard for this character. And that's with monsters being melee restricted. I'm destructing every chance I get, as monsters like Scatha, Maleketh, Storm Wyrms, Dracoliches, etc, are just waaaay beyond me ... Patience!

I'm starting to pick off the DL40ish uniques: Scatha, Smaug, Dwar, The Judges, etc. At first, this was very difficult as I lack the fire power to take out anything significant with a single run thru my sp (all 428 of them!!!). Logrus works nicely on uniques, but 167hp for 37sp is a bit pricey, and I can't seem to locate a wizardstaff.

But now, I've managed a couple more !Str and can finally swap in spell power! I lose 100+hp, but the extra 30% damage seems to be turning the tide.

Scariest moment so far was Scylla, who was nicely lined up in a hallway with her entourage, so I pulled out my 70hp damage doom bolt. I really should have checked who was with her first, since they all responded with revenge and took me down to 40hp! Gotta love that rod of healing, though :)

One more level for the rocket!

I picked up a copy of Armageddon Tome inside a super vault at just CL35. I'm not sure what else was in the vault, as I went crazy with destruction to clear a path to my coveted book! The Node of Chaos quest would be particularly nasty with spell revenge, and honestly, I wasn't sure how I was going to do it.

After that, I built up carefully with my intention to wait for the Mana Storm before taking on the Cloning Pits. In the end, I realized that was probably overkill, and did the quest quite easily at CL39. I only received one artifact ... that stupid beat wooden clappers weapon. Drat! I at least wanted Hammerhand.

So, I did wait for CL40 before the Old Castle, though. However, I had shuffled out Thranduil for some reason, and went into the quest with 18/*** int and no nether resistance. Like the first time I tried my 14% fail mana storm, it failed and turned me into a moron. Hello! 26% fail is a tad too high so I had to fall back on my rockets for the quest. The Titans got Logrus ... no sense messing around. For my reward, I was supposed to get Thranduil, but since I already had that, I picked up an OK replacement with poison resistance and shards. But I think I better keep nether covered for the moment, and I don't have a decent replacement shooter, so both quests ended up being pretty lame.

I think I'll head back to the Anti-magic caves for a bit longer to mop up all those uniques I've been running from. Look out Jack, your days are numbered!

I finally leave Anti-melee for some ang-quests. That Lesser Balrog quest was for 25 of the suckers. Good thing I waited :) So, I really need to adjust to when monsters can melee, as Glaurung hits pretty damn hard. I led him into ASC and let him get next to me so as to avoid retaliation to my mana storms, but that was a big mistake. He was doing 150hp per round of melee, had me down to 220hp in just two rounds, and I figured I had a turn for one more storm before using my only source of healing (trusty rod :) Nope, he took me down to 0hp. Thank goodness you need -1hp to die, and I counted my blessings, zapped my rod, and finished him off. He obliged with Azaghal for fire immunity. I have Taratol at home too, so maybe I'll spend some time at the top of the Dragon's Lair. Ticking off monsters is much safer with immunity :)

Yes! Yes! Yes! Death is near, oh so close. But in the meantime, I plunder a GCV in the dragon caves :D

First, a 4d5 longsword, but guarded by a Master Q. No matter, Mana Storm! And the sword, Ringil :)

OK, this I must use, but it means no Economical Mana (Thorin showed up early on in the caves and I need the con). I can play without it, I guess, but life is much harder. Mana Storm costs 49sp rather than 37sp. It doesn't seem like a big difference, but it is. There are, however, two robes in the vault. I'm hoping for Eternity, but Incanus would be really nice.

Robe #1: Incanus!! Yay!

I'm half way thru the vault, and things are getting hairy. Loki was standing on a 5d5 longsword (Excalipur), but I handled him carefully, measuring out the exact range needed before letting him lose so that he couldn't Mana Storm me.

Better finish up the vault. And at least half the squares are rip offs getting a deep chasm rather than the expected excellent object ... sigh.

I quest for 18 Great Unclean Ones. There is no way that a unique monster quest at DL54 could even compare to the difficulty of this quest. 2 Toxic Waste breaths and I am out (or very nearly so), and they get ticked off so easily by my Logrus breath. My rod of healing waits to recharge, and I have a measly 3 !Healing, and I blew nearly all my !CCW on the first 2!

So, 4 are dead, I'm trying to figure out a way to kill them without using healing. Beam of gravity and run away I guess ... I could Teleport, but then I might land in line of sight of a score of them, quickly ending my aspirations for greatness :)

On 19.6.2011 15:50 chris wrote:
Well, you can probably see in this dump what the problem was. I only had 4 rations of food! Otherwise, I could blast them with Mana Storms, suck up the inevitably Toxic Breath and then use beam of gravity and patience to regenerate hp without the danger of a teleport. The only thing was, I would have starved this way! So, I had to blow all my !Resistance to speed things up, and even then, I barely made it back. I was weak with hunger and 2 left to slay, but I had been conserving, ate my final ration of food, and polished them both off before hunger set in. Had that been only 3 rations of food, I would not have made it :D

I'll really need to start failing quests soon ... That was way too risky.

A measly 6 Archliches was an easy quest. But then came 18 Great Wyrms of Law, and I was ecstatic that I had the foresight to carry Robin Hood's bow as a swap for Shards! Still, I dare not tick those wyrms off, resistance or no resistance, so I fought in ASC, hoping they would march next to me rather than holding back one square off and abusing summoning, breaths, etc. The symmetric targeting code as made this much harder to do than it previously was. Afterwards, Tselakus gave me a respite from the armies of uber monsters, but he was no slouch, and summoned Amberites 3 consecutive first times, all of which led me to destruct and track him down again. I lack darkness resistance, so I was scared of his retaliation, but he never discovered that fact, and soon died in a storm of logrus.

I should mention that I am playing with the options to disable monsters fighting each other, to disable monsters ever being friendly towards the player, and to disable the summoning of pets (You can summon them, but they are hostile!). Probably, the Great Wyrm of Law quest would have played out differently had they been permitted to go summoning mad at the slightest troll or orc sighting.

Thror showed up somewhere in the mix, and I must say having Ringil, Thorin and Thror this early makes me really happy. Its hard for me to see the optimal equipment set with this many options, and Incanus is hardly helping in the resistance department, but I think I have a good kit at last. Still no darkness, but I will ignore that for the time being. And Thranduil has gotten wear practically all game, taunting my choice to play a race with innate telepathy ... sigh. Where is Crimson?

Now the quest is 16 Warp Demons. I should really fix the character dump to tell the numbers for the quests as it really makes a difference whether it is for 6 or for 22! But that would require me to do some code maintenance ;-P

Cantoras is brutal, I must say. I really need to start carrying more Healing ...

First off, he refused to position himself for anti-summoning. Does he spell 1 in 1? It certainly seems like it, so I ended up spotting him a summoning spot adjacent to myself, which he was glad to fill with Nazgul, the Witch King, and other various assorted ninnies (not all at once, since I would teleport when things got hairy). My Logrus ticked him off, and he has plenty of spells to respond with in the 300+ damage range! After 8 or 9 goes, I whittled down his hitpoints, and took him out with my Logrus breath. He dropped squat, which is amazing considering he drops excellent, and the quest reward, too. But the Witch King dropped Tulkas, so all is right in the universe after all :)

These quests are addictive! Time to die ...

Quest for 9 Greater Cyber Wyrm Angel Daemon Liches at DL90 crashed the game. Seems like these monsters have the UNIQUE2 flag which prevents more than one of them being generated at a time. I removed the flag so that I could continue playing, but there was no way I could kill 9 of those guys. I killed one just to show it can be done, and it took 8 _Healing and 1 -Healing, and nearly killed me. When ticked off, they seem to only consider their powerful spells for some reason???

This game is so much harder than Hengband! Stupid spell revenge ...

Well, I had a harder time with Shub-Niggurath than with Nodens, and I'm really not quite sure why that was. I guess I was expecting Nodens to Mana Storm every move, and I happen to reflect his Mana Bolts so when he did that instead, I was overjoyed. But Shub-Niggurath also Mana Storms, and went absolutely bonkers summoning. Very scary. Gothmog was not too bad, though he is about 2x harder than in Hengband thanks to the spell revenge. Normally, he's a pushover but not so now. And Cyberdemon summons necessitate an immediate flee!

Finally, there was the Destroyer. Ho hum! He breathes disintegration every turn these days :) Lots of healing (8 _Healing, 1 -Healing, 1 Daeron activation and 4 !Healing). Definitely the most resources required to date, but never was I in danger. Monsters that don't summon are so passé.

I better resource up for the final battles. Plus, there are about 80 high quality uniques left around, including most of the Amberites. I've been Calling the Void to destroy levels and fight the questors mano a mano. But this means that I garner *no* resources, and I am a bit light on resistance and *healing*.

On 19.6.2011 21:54 chris wrote:

Oh, hell! I didn't feel like scumming resources, nor like slogging thru remaining uniques. So I just went for the big J.

First, Call the Void to clear the level. Turns out there was a GCV on the level that I would have otherwise explored, though that can be tricky with The Serpent of Chaos chasing you down. Then, setup and Mana Storm. A couple of times, I only got 1 Mana Storm on him before he had me down to 400hp and surrounded by Cyberdemons, but that was pretty unusual, and for the most part the battle went like this:
Me: Mana Storm.
Him: Ticked off and something nasty.
Me: Heal.
Him: Something nasty.
Me: Heal.
Him: Take step towards me.
Repeat.

I milked about 20 charges from my staves of healing and had plenty of resources. Neither Morgy nor Sauron came to play, and the funniest was Great Cthulhu whose entourage of 100+ came in "Lure" Posture. I guess they won't be chasing me :D

Very nice! I always respect your ability to play through with magic users so frequently. I get sick of resting so often (as compared to buzzsaw melee characters), but I'll admit that slamming enemies with spellnukes is always fun, especially a blue-mage Starburst against light-sensitive enemies :D

On 20.6.2011 00:41 chris wrote:
Thanks! Spellcasters are annoying in the early game, especially for a detection-less high mage. Its definitely tedious going, too, probably about 10x the keystrokes as a fighter. I tend to use macros heavily, though:

Rest macro: \eR&\r
Attack macro: \e*t

That speeds things up. And end game is worth it, but by the time you get thru the tedious part and achieve total power, it is over so quickly.

And stop gloating about that Starburst :) ... I'm still sore over my last Blue Mage's complete inability to learn that talent despite over an hour of toying with Solars :D :D (Actually, that was in Heng and it might be easier to do in Cheng with the revenge code. During my 22 Solar quest with this guy, I had no problems getting tagged with Starbursts. Hmm ... Beastman scum for Eat Magic??????)
